The milk. Kael stood in an alley between two Second Ring townhouses, blood drying on his knuckles, his son howling against his chest, and realized that he had no idea how to feed a baby.

He’d never needed to know. Amara had handled it — or the Tower healers had, or the wet nurse that the Seer Council provided. Kael had visited. Held Tianlei. Smiled at the appropriate moments. Returned to his quarters and his diplomatic correspondence and the comfortable assumption that fatherhood was something that happened during scheduled appointments.

Tianlei screamed louder. The sound echoed off stone walls and formation-lit windows. Someone would hear. Someone would investigate. And Kael’s face was known in the Second Ring — the Imperial Heir couldn’t hide in the district where his family’s palace dominated the skyline.

He moved. Not with a plan — with momentum. One street to the next. The wooden horse in his pocket hitting his thigh with each step, a ridiculous detail that his mind kept returning to because the horse was the only thing he’d done right today.

He needed somewhere safe. One night. Long enough to stop the bleeding and feed his son.

He found it in the memory of a man who’d died eleven years ago.

Wen Shuren had served the Xuán household for sixty years before retiring to a modest apartment in the Third Ring’s eastern quarter. He’d been Kael’s grandfather’s personal attendant — the kind of servant who knew where the bodies were buried because he’d helped dig the graves. He’d died eleven years ago. His wife, Meihua, still lived in the apartment.

Kael knocked at her door at the second hour past midnight, bleeding on her doorstep, carrying a screaming baby.

Meihua Wen was seventy-three years old. She opened the door, looked at the Imperial Heir she hadn’t seen since her husband’s funeral, assessed the situation with the practical efficiency of a woman who’d spent six decades managing a household that contained celestial-bloodline drama on a daily basis, and said: "Inside. Now."

She didn’t ask questions. Not because she wasn’t curious — because questions could wait and babies couldn’t.

Within ten minutes: milk warming over a formation stove. Clean cloth for the arm. Bandages for the ribs. A cloak — plain, dark, no insignia — draped over the back of a chair. And Meihua sitting across from Kael with Tianlei on her lap, feeding the baby from a ceramic bottle with the calm expertise of someone who’d raised four children and considered hysteria an inefficient use of energy.

Tianlei drank. Stopped screaming. The silence that followed was the most beautiful sound Kael had ever heard.

"The burn needs cleaning," Meihua said, not looking up from the baby. "There’s salve in the cabinet. Blue jar. Your grandfather used it for training injuries he didn’t want the court healers to document."

Kael found the jar. Applied the salve. The pain didn’t diminish, but the edges softened from screaming to grumbling.

"I can’t tell you what happened," he said.

"I don’t need to know." Meihua burped the baby with three precise pats. Professional. "I need to know where you’re going."

"Seven Peaks."

"That’s four hundred kilometers."

"Yes."

She looked at him. Seventy-three years old. Eyes that had watched three generations of Xuán dynasty politics and retained the particular clarity of someone who’d survived it all by being smarter than the people she served.

"You’ll need a sling for the baby," she said. "And different clothes. And to leave before dawn, because whoever is looking for you will check the retired household staff within the day."

She made the sling from a bolt of cloth she kept for mending. Cut his Imperial shirt off him and replaced it with one of her late husband’s — too broad in the shoulders, too short in the sleeves, perfect for looking like someone who wasn’t the Imperial Heir. She took the jade ring when he offered it, then pushed it back.

"Keep it hidden. Not pawned. You may need it before this is over."

He left at the fourth hour. Tianlei sleeping in the sling against his chest, wrapped in the cloak, the jade ring in his pocket beside the wooden horse. Meihua watched from the window. She didn’t wave. She’d spent sixty years not waving.

She was the best person Kael had ever known, and he hadn’t thought about her once in eleven years.

Through the Third Ring on back routes — the servant passages between buildings that existed because someone needed to carry laundry and deliver food and clean the gutters, and the aristocracy had decided centuries ago that these functions should be invisible. Kael knew them. Not because he’d used them — because his tutors had mapped them as part of an exercise in "understanding household infrastructure," which was the Imperial education system’s way of teaching future rulers how their palaces actually functioned.

He’d thought the exercise was pointless at the time. He was revising that assessment.

Through the Fourth Ring by mid-morning. The checkpoints between Rings were supposed to be routine — identity verification, spiritual signature scan, passage authorization. Kael approached the Fourth-to-Fifth checkpoint with his heart hammering and his face arranged into the expression of a man who belonged somewhere and resented being asked to prove it.

"Name?" The guard was bored. A good sign.

"Wen Daolin. Courier service. Delivering documents to the Fifth District trade office."

The guard looked at the baby in the sling. "Courier with a baby?"

"My wife is visiting her mother in the Fifth. I’m dropping off the documents and picking her up." The lie came out smooth — not because Kael was a good liar, but because diplomacy was lying with better vocabulary, and he’d been doing it since he was twelve.

The guard waved him through.

Behind him, at the checkpoint he’d just passed, two men in unremarkable clothes were asking the guard whether he’d seen a man matching a specific description. The guard — bored, underpaid, dealing with the hundredth face of the morning — said no without checking his memory.

Kael walked faster.

The Seventh District was a different world.

He’d known this intellectually. Every Imperial Heir received briefings on the outer Rings — demographics, infrastructure reports, and economic indicators. Numbers on formation slates. Abstractions that represented millions of people without requiring the Heir to look at any of them.

Looking was different.

The buildings were smaller here. Closer together. The formation lights — where they worked at all — were dim and inconsistent, powered by converters that had been installed weeks ago using blueprints from Seven Peaks. Before the converters, this district had been dark since the wave. Months of darkness. Months of no power, no communication, no functioning hospitals.

The streets were clean, which surprised him. Not formation-maintained clean — human-maintained. People sweeping. Repairing. Doing with hands what technology had done before the wave and what the Empire hadn’t bothered to replace.

A woman at a street corner saw the baby. Saw Kael’s face — not recognizing the Imperial Heir, seeing a tired man with a bruised jaw and an infant in a sling. She held out a cloth-wrapped bundle without a word.

Bread. Dried fruit. A small ceramic container of milk.

"For the little one," she said.

Kael stared at her. She was thin. The food she was offering was probably a significant portion of what she had. She was giving it to a stranger because the stranger had a baby and babies needed to eat.

"Thank you," he said. His voice broke on the second word.

She nodded. Went back to her doorstep. Kael stood in the Seventh District with tears running down his face and food in his hands that had been given freely by a woman who had almost nothing, and he understood — not intellectually, not as a briefing or a number, but in his chest — why Raven had built what she’d built. Tianlei was hungry again. The milk from the Seventh District woman was gone. Kael had nothing left — no food, no resources, no contacts in the borderlands. He’d passed beyond the reach of his family’s network and into the territory where the Empire’s authority existed in theory and disappeared in practice.

The barn smelled like old hay and animal warmth. Something had lived here recently — the straw was pressed flat in patterns that suggested large bodies. The farmer had probably abandoned it when the wave hit, taking the livestock to wherever livestock went when the world’s technology died overnight.

Tianlei cried. The sound filled the barn — small and vast simultaneously, the particular acoustics of an infant’s distress in an enclosed space amplifying it until it felt like the walls themselves were weeping.

Kael held his son. Rocked him. The rocking accomplished nothing — Tianlei was hungry, not restless, and no amount of motion would substitute for food. But Kael rocked him anyway because it was the only thing he could do, and doing something was better than the alternative, which was admitting that he was alone in a barn in the rain with a baby he couldn’t feed and pursuers somewhere behind him and four hundred kilometers between him and the only safe place on the continent.

Despair hit him. The real kind — not the dramatic despair of political setbacks or strategic failures, but the grinding, physical, exhausted despair of a body that had been running for thirty-six hours on cracked ribs and no sleep. The despair that said: you can’t do this. You’re not built for this. You’re a prince who can’t feed his own son.

Tianlei’s hand found his finger.

The grip of a three-month-old. Nothing — a reflex, muscle memory, the instinctive need to hold onto something. The hand was tiny. The fingers couldn’t close all the way around Kael’s index finger. The strength behind the grip was negligible by any physical measure.

It was everything.

Kael looked at his son. Tianlei’s golden eyes — open now, wet from crying, focused on his father’s face with the absolute attention that babies give to the person holding them. Not judgment. "Okay," Kael said. To the baby. To himself. To the rain. "Okay."

He waited for dawn. It came.

Kael pushed through it. His body was failing — the cracked rib had become a constant negotiation, each breath bought at the cost of pain. The formation burn on his arm was hot and swollen, infection setting in despite Meihua’s salve. His legs moved because he told them to, not because they wanted to.

Tianlei was quiet. Not the suppressed silence of the ritual — the exhausted quiet of a baby who’d been traveling for two days and had adapted to the sling’s rhythm and his father’s heartbeat and the constant motion that had become the only normal he knew.

The wooden horse was still in Kael’s pocket. He’d checked three times. A talisman. An anchor. The proof that somewhere, before all of this, he’d been a man who walked into a market and bought his son a toy because that was what fathers did.

He reached Seven Peaks’ territory by late afternoon. Felt the formation network before he saw the mountain — a hum in the spiritual density that organized the ambient energy into something structured and purposeful. Then the mountain itself, rising from the valley with living architecture gleaming on its slopes and Sylvara’s canopy visible above the Verdant Spire, green and gold in the late sun.

He almost fell.

The gate. The final stretch. A path that formation-maintained terrain kept smooth and level, designed for arrivals, designed for people walking toward something rather than away from it. Kael walked it with the last of what he had — not strength, not cultivation, not the Imperial authority that had defined him since birth. Stubbornness. The particular stubbornness of a man who’d been running for two days and was not going to stop within sight of the only place that could keep his son alive.

Thorne met him at the gate.

The security chief — sixteen years Imperial Guard, Voidstrike at his hip, the man who noticed everything and commented on nothing — looked at the Imperial Heir of the Xuán dynasty. At the blood. The torn clothes. The infected arm. The cracked rib visible in the way Kael held his torso. The baby in the sling, quiet and wide-eyed.

The gatehouse formation pulsed. Green. Genuine intent. No deception.

"I need Raven," Kael said.

His legs gave out. Not dramatically — simply stopped supporting weight, the way a bridge stops supporting weight when the last structural member fails. He folded. Thorne moved — fast, faster than a man his size should move, one hand catching Kael’s shoulder and the other reaching for the sling, for the baby, because Thorne’s priorities were always correct and in this moment the baby was the priority.

Tianlei transferred from his father’s arms to Thorne’s with the ease of a child who’d spent two days being held and had learned to accept new hands without complaint.

Kael hit the ground. Looked up at the mountain. At the living architecture. At the formation lights. At the spirit tree’s canopy catching the last of the day’s light.

The wooden horse was still in his pocket.

He closed his eyes.
