So: not a mountain. A small collection, arranged on the floor outside his door by people who knew him well enough to know what he’d value and well enough to know he’d be embarrassed if they watched him open anything.

A jade slip from Silas, containing a formation diagram so elegant that Elian’s instinctive resonance sang when he picked it up — a self-sustaining energy loop, the kind of design that existed at the intersection of mathematics and beauty, the kind that made Elian forget he couldn’t multiply because multiplication was just numbers and this was music.

A single Moonveil Blossom, delivered by Jace at some point during the night and placed in a small pot of water outside the door. The flower glowed faintly in the morning light — not spiritual energy, just the natural luminescence of a plant that had been blessed by a planetary consciousness and bonded to a man who talked to it. Jace was nowhere to be seen, which meant he’d delivered it and retreated before anyone could thank him, because Jace expressed affection through botany, and proximity made him itchy.

A hand-knitted scarf from Shen Wuyan. Not formation-enhanced. Not spiritually significant. Just wool, knitted by 847-year-old hands that had decided the boy’s neck needed covering in the approaching cold, and no amount of cosmic significance would convince Shen Wuyan that a child didn’t need a warm scarf when the temperature dropped.

And Aren’s gift, which was waiting on Elian’s desk because Aren had placed it there the night before and pretended to be asleep when Elian noticed.

Not ordinary ice. Frost crystal — Aren’s specialty, the particular state of frozen water that his cultivation produced when he shaped it with intent rather than instinct. The figurine was Sylvara.

"I practiced for three weeks," Aren said from the next bunk, where he was absolutely not pretending to be asleep anymore. "Don’t tell anyone I made six that broke."

Elian held the figurine up to the light. Sylvara in miniature. The tree whose roots he felt beneath his feet every day, whose awareness hummed at the edge of his consciousness, whose dreaming had become part of his sleeping. The tree, rendered in his best friend’s ice, glowing in his hands.

"It’s perfect."

"The third branch on the left is 2 degrees off. I noticed after it set. It’s been bothering me."

"It’s perfect, Aren."

"The branch is off."

"I don’t care about the branch."

"I care about the branch."

This was a conversation they’d had in various forms since they’d met — Aren insisting on precision, Elian insisting on meaning, neither wrong, both stubborn, the argument itself a form of agreement because you didn’t argue with people you didn’t care about.

Elian set the figurine on the shelf beside his bed. Sylvara in ice, catching the light. It would be there tomorrow and the day after and every day after that, because frost crystal didn’t melt and Aren’s cultivation didn’t waver, and some gifts were permanent in a world where permanence was hard to come by.

"Happy birthday," Aren said.

"Thanks."

"Seven is good. Six was fine. Seven is better."

"You’re taller. You can reach the second shelf in the library. That’s where the good books are."

"That’s your reason?"

"It’s a good reason."

It was, actually.

Not a physical gift — a declaration. She sat across from the boys in the dining hall (the main hall, family section, the table they’d claimed as theirs since the hall was built, because Elian liked the window and Aren liked the corner and the table provided both) and said:

"No lessons today. No duties. No formation theory. No root-network meditation. No training. Today you’re seven, and tomorrow you can be responsible for the mountain again. Today you’re just seven."

Elian looked at her. The golden eyes that saw ley lines and root-networks and formation resonance points before anyone finished pointing at them. The eyes that, right now, were the eyes of a seven-year-old boy who’d just been told he could have a day off.

"The whole day?"

"The whole day."

"Can we go to the garden?"

"We can go to the garden."

"Can Aren come?"

"Aren is coming whether I invite him or not."

"Obviously," Aren said, because it was obvious.

Not the Spirit Garden — the garden. The informal space between the residential quarter and the Verdant Spire’s eastern wall, where living architecture had produced a grove of small trees, a wildflower meadow, and a patch of grass that was perpetually soft regardless of weather because the mountain had decided that children needed somewhere to sit and had engineered the ground accordingly.

Elian sat in the grass. Aren beside him. Raven on the bench. Veyr propped against the bench’s arm, pommel silver — the color of an afternoon with no agenda. 7T9 on Raven’s shoulder, enduring Luneth.

The silver-blue kitten had decided that 7T9 was a perch, a toy, and a personal challenge, possibly in that order. She batted at his tail with a crystalline paw. She attempted to sit on his head, which was physically impossible given that she was now the size of a large housecat and he was 8 inches long, but physical impossibility had never deterred Luneth from anything. She chirped at him in frequencies that Aeraliths used for play-communication and that 7T9’s processors registered as "acoustically hostile."

"The kitten is on me again," 7T9 said.

"She likes you," Elian offered.

"She is sitting on my sensory array. My visual processing is compromised by approximately 40% due to fur coverage. This is not affection. This is obstruction."

"It’s both," Aren said.

Luneth purred. The purr vibrated through 7T9’s star-metal chassis at a frequency that he would later document as "structurally resonant and operationally irritating."

Solanthea — the gold kitten, the one with courage — had found a beetle and was stalking it across the meadow with the focused intensity of a predator who hadn’t yet learned that beetles were not worth the dignity investment. The beetle, oblivious, continued its journey across the grass with the unhurried pace of an organism that had no natural predators at this altitude and therefore no evolutionary context for being hunted by a crystalline cat.

Aurethyn was with Shen Wuyan. Always with Shen Wuyan. Four terraces down, visible as a violet shimmer on the old woman’s shoulder, humming at frequencies that smoothed the edges of everything within range. Shen was reading. Aurethyn was purring. The companionship of beings who had been connected for 847 years before they shared the same air.

Elian lay back in the grass. The sky above was autumn blue — deep, clear, the kind of sky that existed at altitude when the air was clean, and the spiritual energy was dense enough to taste. Sylvara’s canopy edged into his field of vision — the great tree’s crown, far overhead, golden-green against the blue.

He could feel her. Not through meditation, not through deliberate connection — the ambient awareness that had become background to his existence. The root-network humming beneath the grass. The mountain’s spiritual energy circulating through channels that Silas’s formation arrays followed but hadn’t created. The slow, patient pulse of something very large and very old, thinking thoughts that operated on timescales measured in decades rather than seconds.

Today, the thoughts felt closer. Not louder — closer. As if Sylvara had leaned in. As if the tree was paying attention to this specific patch of grass on this specific day for reasons that had nothing to do with ley lines or dimensional anchoring or cosmic significance.

Maybe trees celebrated birthdays, too. In their own way. On their own timescale. A day that meant something, marked not with gifts but with attention — the focus of an ancient awareness on a small boy lying in the grass, feeling the roots beneath him and the sky above him and the particular quality of a day that was his.

"Happy birthday," the grass hummed.

Or maybe that was the wind. Or the formation network. Or Elian’s imagination filling the ambient spiritual frequency with meaning it didn’t carry.

He didn’t care which. It was his birthday. The grass hummed. The kittens played. Aren was beside him, and Raven was on the bench, and 7T9 was being sat on by a kitten, and the mountain held all of it.

Seven was good.

Evening came the way evenings came at Seven Peaks — slowly, the mountain holding light longer than the valley because the altitude earned it.

Raven tucked Elian in. The ritual: blanket adjusted (Elian preferred it to his chin, Aren preferred it to his waist, and the 30-second negotiation of shared-room blanket protocol was a nightly institution that neither boy would acknowledge as a routine because acknowledging routines made you predictable and predictable was boring).

Aren was already asleep. The frost on his pillow was soft and geometric — happy frost, the kind his cultivation produced when his subconscious was content. Small crystalline patterns radiating from where his breath met the fabric, each one a snowflake’s more ambitious cousin.

"Mama."

"Mm."

"Sylvara’s dreaming."

Raven sat on the edge of the bunk. The room was dark except for the faint luminescence of the Moonveil Blossom in its pot on the windowsill and the ice Sylvara on the shelf, both glowing softly, as if the garden and the mountain had decided to send representatives to watch over two sleeping boys.

"What’s she dreaming about?"

Elian looked at the ceiling. The living wood above — part of the residential quarter’s organic architecture, grown from Sylvara’s cuttings. The wood hummed faintly. Everything hummed faintly at Seven Peaks if you listened right, and Elian always listened right.

"Something deep. Really deep. Under the roots, I can feel. Under the formation network. Under everything." He paused. Searching for words the way he searched for the right answer to six times seven — reaching for something that was there but wouldn’t come when called. "It’s like she’s remembering a dream she had before she fell asleep. A really long time ago. And the dream is waking up because she’s waking up. And the dream is... big."

"Big how?"

"Like the mountain is big. Like the mountain used to be something more than a mountain, and Sylvara remembers what it was because she was there."

Raven was quiet for a moment. The kind of quiet she went when she was listening to something beyond the words — not with her life-sense, not with cultivation awareness, but with the particular attention of a mother hearing her child describe something real in the only language he had.

"Does it scare you?"

"No." Immediate. Certain. "It’s not scary. It’s like... you know when you’re half-asleep, and you remember something good? And you don’t want to wake up all the way because the remembering is nice? It’s like that. But it’s the mountain that’s half-asleep. And it’s been half-asleep for a really, really long time. And now it’s stretching."

"Should I look into it?"

Elian thought about this. The seven-year-old was weighing a question that touched on planetary consciousness and geological timescales, and arriving at an answer that was characteristically practical.

"Not yet. She’s not ready. If you poke at it, she might stop stretching. Like when you wake someone up too early, and they’re grumpy."

"Sylvara gets grumpy?"

"The roots squeeze when she’s annoyed. Silas thinks it’s a pressure fluctuation. It’s not. She’s grumpy."

Raven smoothed his hair. The boy who felt the mountain’s moods. The boy whose seventh birthday gift was a day without responsibility, because every other day required him to hold the world’s dimensional fabric steady while also learning formation theory and failing at multiplication and being seven.

"Happy birthday, sweetheart."

"Thanks, Mama."

"Seven is good."

"Aren says seven has more options. Because I can reach the second shelf in the library now."

"He’s not wrong."

"He’s never wrong. It’s annoying."

She kissed his forehead. He closed his eyes. The root-network hummed beneath the building — the deep, constant frequency that was Elian’s lullaby, had been since they came to Seven Peaks, would be until the mountain or the boy decided otherwise.

She stood in the doorway. Two boys. One room. Frost on one pillow, the faintest gold glow on the other — Elian’s spiritual energy, radiating in sleep, the warmth of a child whose nature connected him to every ley line on the continent and who carried that weight the way he carried his multiplication homework: reluctantly, imperfectly, and without ever putting it down.

"He’s seven."

"Yes. That is the contradiction."

Raven closed the door. Walked down the corridor. The mountain beneath her feet, humming. Sylvara’s roots reaching deeper, dreaming of something that used to be, something that was waking up, something big that a seven-year-old boy had described as a mountain stretching after a very long sleep.

She’d let it stretch. She’d let the mountain wake on its own terms. She’d let her son have his birthday and his day off and his ice figurine with the branch that was 2 degrees off and his tongue that was currently blue.

Tomorrow, the world would need him again. Tonight he was seven and asleep, and the frost on the next pillow was happy, and the mountain was dreaming, and that was enough.
