They came out of the east like something the forest had chewed up and spat out.

Forty-seven people. Coop counted them from the gatehouse overlook as they emerged from the tree line onto the approach road — a straggling column of exhaustion that stretched fifty meters from the first walker to the last. No formation. No discipline. The particular shamble of people who’d been moving on willpower for so long that their bodies had stopped consulting their brains about whether to continue.

Children. That was the first thing Coop noticed. Fourteen children under the age of twelve, most of them being carried or held upright by adults who didn’t look much better. Thin faces. Clothes that had been designed for climate-controlled Federation interiors and were utterly inadequate for three weeks of walking through post-wave wilderness. No packs — they’d abandoned everything nonessential days ago, judging by the way they moved. Traveling light because traveling at all was the only thing that mattered.

His cybernetic eyes adjusted, cataloguing details at a distance that would have been guesswork for anyone else. Malnutrition across the group — not starvation, but the particular gauntness of people who’d been rationing for weeks. Three adults limping. One child being carried who wasn’t moving at all — unconscious or sleeping, impossible to tell at this range. Federation clothing on every one of them — the standardized, efficient, identical-cut garments that the Federation issued to its population because individual clothing choices were "an inefficient allocation of textile resources."

The woman at the front was the only one walking with purpose rather than momentum. Forties. Short dark hair, practical cut. Broad shoulders that suggested manual labor despite the Federation’s preference for automation. She carried nothing — had given her pack to someone behind her who was struggling. Her eyes scanned the gatehouse with the rapid, systematic assessment of an engineer evaluating a structure.

The gatehouse read them. Green. Every one.

"Open the gate," Coop said. "And get Mira’s team down here."

He met them at the threshold himself.

Not Thorne. Not a disciple. Coop. Because he was Federation, and these people would hear his clipped consonants and see his cybernetic eyes and know — before anyone said a word — that someone here understood where they came from.

The woman at the front stopped three meters from the gate. Close enough to see his face. Her expression cycled through recognition, confusion, and something that might have been hope if she’d had enough energy left for hope.

"You’re Federation," she said. Her voice was hoarse. Three weeks of walking and not enough water.

"Was." Coop stepped forward. Kept his body language open, his spiritual pressure suppressed to baseline. These people had spent their lives in a society that feared and suppressed spiritual energy. The ambient density at Seven Peaks would already be hitting them like a wall. "Harlan Coop. Forty years Federation military. I left. Long story." He looked past her at the column. "How many need medical attention right now?"

"Seven." No hesitation. She’d been tracking. "Three adults with infected blisters that went septic two days ago. The Varro boy — he’s eleven, stopped walking yesterday, his mother’s been carrying him. Two children with respiratory infections. And—" She glanced at a teenage girl near the middle of the column, being held upright by an older woman. "Kessa hasn’t eaten in four days. She gives her rations to the younger children."

Coop’s jaw tightened. "Name?"

"Dr. Lian Huo. Maintenance engineer, Secondary Research Facility Four." She met his eyes with the particular directness of someone who’d decided that honesty was the only currency she had left. "I know what that means to you. I know what they did in those facilities."

"We’ll get to that." Coop turned and signaled. Mira’s first-responder team was already approaching — six trained medical personnel, stretchers, formation-powered diagnostic equipment. "Medical first. Then food, water, shelter. Then we talk."

Lian Huo watched the medical team approach. Watched them lift the Varro boy from his mother’s arms with the gentle efficiency of people who’d practiced this. Watched the mother collapse to her knees and press her forehead to the ground, not from deference but from the particular release that came when someone finally — finally — took the weight.

"Is this real?" Lian asked. Her voice cracked on the second word. "This place. These people. Is any of it real?"

"Every stone of it," Coop said. "Come on. Let’s get your people inside."

The processing center handled them the way the charter intended — orderly, dignified, efficient. Workcamp registration for adults who were able. Housing assignments in the refugee quarter. Medical screening for everyone. Education enrollment for children.

But the culture shock was staggering.

A Federation woman stood in front of a living-architecture wall and watched it grow — slowly, visibly, stone extruding in organic curves that followed the formation network’s template. She reached out. Touched it. Pulled her hand back as if burned.

"It’s warm," she whispered.

"It’s alive," the processing disciple said, because he’d said it forty times today and it never got less strange for the newcomers. "The buildings grow from the mountain. The formations guide the shape."

The woman stared at the wall. Then at the disciple. Then at the wall again. In the Federation, buildings were manufactured in factories from standardized components, assembled by machines, and maintained by automated systems. The concept of a building that grew — that was warm to the touch, that responded to the spiritual energy flowing through it — didn’t have a category in her worldview.

Across the processing center, a man was trying to start a cooking fire. He’d been at it for ten minutes. In the Federation, food was heated by thermal pads, prepared by automated systems, and delivered through distribution networks. He had never, in his forty years of life, held a match. A workcamp volunteer — a woman from the Eighth Ring who’d been a refugee herself three months ago — knelt beside him and showed him how. Patiently. Without judgment. Because she remembered what it felt like to not know things that everyone else took for granted.

Outside, on the processing center’s terrace, a child stepped onto grass for the first time.

Coop watched her. Six years old, maybe. Federation crèche clothing — the standardized grey jumpsuits they dressed the children in. She stood at the edge of the stone terrace where it met the garden path, and she looked at the grass the way you might look at an ocean if you’d only ever seen it in pictures.

She put one foot on it. Barefoot — someone had taken her shoes off for the medical screening, and she hadn’t put them back on. The grass bent under her weight. She went very still.

Then she sat down. Slowly. Touched the blades with both hands. Looked up at the sky — open sky, not a Federation habitat ceiling — and her face did something that Coop would remember for the rest of his life.

She smiled. Just a small thing. Uncertain. The smile of a child encountering a world she didn’t know existed.

His cybernetic eyes recorded it. He didn’t need the recording. Some things you didn’t forget.

Six of the children were wrong.

Not sick — wrong in a way that Coop recognized because he’d lived it. He noticed it during the afternoon processing, when the children were gathered in the temporary care area while their parents completed registration. Most of them were doing what traumatized children did — clinging to each other, staring at walls, flinching at sounds. Normal responses to abnormal circumstances.

Six of them were doing something else.

A boy of eight sat cross-legged on the floor, eyes unfocused, lips moving silently. Not talking to himself — processing. The particular rapid micro-expression pattern of a mind running multiple parallel analyses, thoughts stacking on top of each other in compressed layers. Coop had felt it himself. The pressure. The racing. The sense of a wall in your head that something was trying to break through.

A girl of ten kept closing her eyes and tilting her head, as if listening to frequencies nobody else could hear. When she opened her eyes, she’d look at whatever was in front of her — a chair, a wall, a person — with an expression of comprehension that went too deep for a ten-year-old. As if she could see the structure beneath the surface.

Four others, scattered through the group. The same symptoms at different intensities. Mental stacking. Cognitive compression. Pressure behind the eyes. Difficulty sleeping because their thoughts wouldn’t slow down.

Federation conditioning plus wave activation. Coop knew exactly what was happening to them. He didn’t say a word to anyone except the processing disciple, who received a quiet instruction to mark six specific files with a notation that looked like a standard medical flag but meant something entirely different.

Then there were the other two.

Not mental symptoms. Physical. A boy of perhaps ten — dark-haired, quiet, with the particular watchfulness of a child who’d learned early that being noticed was dangerous. His hands wouldn’t stop moving. He picked up everything within reach — formation crystals, tools, construction materials left by the processing center’s ongoing expansion. Not fidgeting. Analyzing. His fingers mapped surfaces with a precision that had nothing to do with curiosity and everything to do with comprehension.

Coop watched him find a broken formation crystal in a discard pile. Standard diagnostic type — cracked housing, misaligned internal matrix, the kind of thing Silas’s students spent weeks learning to repair.

The boy turned it over three times. Pressed his thumbs against two specific points on the housing. Twisted. The crystal clicked. The internal matrix realigned with a hum that made the nearest formation node pulse in recognition.

Better than it was. In thirty seconds. Without training, without tools, without understanding how he’d done it.

The boy put it down and moved on to the next object, already forgotten.

Coop didn’t recognize what he was seeing. He recognized what he wasn’t seeing — this wasn’t cognitive. Not mental architecture. Something else. The hands, not the head. Creation, not comprehension.

He flagged the two files separately.

Raven’s office. Evening. Door sealed. Formation privacy wards active.

"Six Cognitect-potential among forty-seven refugees," Coop said. He stood by the window, cybernetic eyes dim — the particular setting they adopted when he was processing internally rather than observing. "Same symptom profile I had. Mental stacking, cognitive pressure, wall in the head. Varying intensities — two are close to breakthrough, four are earlier stage."

Raven was leaning against her desk, arms crossed. She looked tired — not the performing-tiredness of a leader maintaining appearances, but the real thing. Dark circles. A healing burn on her left wrist from a formation experiment that morning that she’d forgotten to have Mira look at. The half-eaten remains of a meal Elian had apparently brought her, based on the careful arrangement of food on the plate and the small paper crane perched on the edge.

"And the other two?" she said.

"Different." Coop frowned. "Not cognitive. Something with their hands. One of them fixed a broken diagnostic crystal in thirty seconds — didn’t know how, just... did it. The other keeps disassembling everything she touches and putting it back together in configurations that work better than the original design."

Raven went still.

Very still. The kind of still that Coop had learned to recognize over months of working with a woman who knew more than she could explain and was very good at not explaining it.

"I know what that is," she said quietly. "It’s not the same path. It’s something else. Related, but different. The head versus the hands." She unfolded her arms. "They’re builders. The way you’re a thinker."

She didn’t name it. The word — whatever it was — stayed behind her teeth. Coop had learned not to push when Raven’s eyes went distant like that, when she was pulling from knowledge she couldn’t cite and wouldn’t discuss.

"If the ratio holds," Coop said carefully, "across the Federation population. Three hundred million people. Decades of conditioning that suppressed spiritual development and forced cognitive and mechanical evolution instead."

The silence between them was filled with mathematics neither of them wanted to finish.

"Even a fraction of a percent," Raven said. "Thousands. Two entirely new paths that didn’t exist on Ascara before the wave. That the Federation accidentally created by trying to destroy the thing they were most afraid of."

"And that nobody on the other side has ever encountered." Coop’s cybernetic eyes brightened — the flicker of something that might have been hope, filtered through forty years of pragmatism. "Whatever’s coming — the invasion, the Devourers — they’ve spent millennia fighting cultivators. They know spiritual energy. They know formations and techniques and combat methods that use the same fundamental power source."

He looked at her.

"They’ve never fought someone who doesn’t use spiritual energy at all."

The paper crane on Raven’s plate rustled in a draft that came from nowhere.

"Classified," Raven said. "Same as before. Nobody knows about either path except the people on it and us. Not until we understand what we’re dealing with."

"Agreed."

She picked up the paper crane. Studied it. Elian’s work — slightly lopsided, made with the particular earnestness of a six-year-old who’d been practicing.

"Forty-seven people," she said. "Three weeks of walking. A woman who watched children die in a Federation facility and couldn’t stop it. Six potential Cognitects, two potential — whatever the second path is. Fourteen children who’ve never touched grass."

She set the crane down gently.

"Get them settled. Workcamp, housing, education. The charter doesn’t care where they came from."

"And the eight flagged files?"

"I’ll handle those personally. Quietly. The way we handled yours."

Coop nodded. Turned to leave. At the door, he paused.

"The girl," he said. "Six years old. Stepped onto the grass outside the processing center. First time she’d ever felt it under her feet." His voice was even. His cybernetic eyes were not. "She smiled, Raven. Like she’d just discovered the world had a texture."

Raven closed her eyes. Opened them.

"That’s what we’re fighting for," she said. "That exact thing. A child discovering that the world has a texture."

"I know." He left.

Raven sat alone in her office with a paper crane and eight files and the weight of three hundred million people who might be carrying paths they didn’t know they had.

Outside, in the refugee quarter, a child was still sitting on the grass. She’d been there for an hour. Nobody had asked her to move.

Nobody would.
