The festival lanterns had been taken down, carefully, stored for next year because the Charter’s resource guidelines specified that beautiful things should be reused rather than discarded. Eighty-five soldiers in the south. Building. Training. Three showing Cognitect symptoms. The dual-pathway possibility that would, if confirmed, mean the Federation’s greatest cruelty had produced not one new path but two.

The root-network bridge. Nine seconds of continental harmonization. Silas and the Confederate bio-engineers working on stabilization. Months away from practical application. But the proof was established, and the direction was clear: living infrastructure connecting the mountain to the jungle.

Torren in the rivers. Tarek in the sky. Resha arguing with smiths about grain alignment. The bridges growing.

The Sanctum. The organic growth at 3.2km radius, expanding at 2 meters per day. The synchronization pulse broadcasting at 0.1203 hertz, 47 harmonics, 8.3-second cycle. The heartbeat that coordinated 29 confirmed fabricated individuals in a crescent that was widening. Three confirmed at Ashford Crossing — water, food, shelter. Infrastructure targets. Control targets.

The scanner in the gate corridor, running continuously, finding nothing. Green. Every day green. The sensitivity upgrade underway — Holt cutting precision resonance filters, Silas redesigning the detection architecture. Four weeks to improved sensitivity. And the question underneath the green: clean, or invisible?

Branch 7. Lira Feng. Ten months. The evacuation rotation planned for spring. The healer who didn’t know her posting had an expiration date.

East was where the enemy grew. Patient. Organized. Building something that had strategy and infrastructure targeting and a heartbeat that pulsed every 8.3 seconds without deviation.

The Northern Clans had no magic — giants who relied on brute strength, on the sheer physical dominance of bodies bred for a frozen world where everything was trying to kill you. They’d wanted to sacrifice him. Offer the wrong child to the gods, beg forgiveness for whatever sin had cursed their wombs. Bjorn and Freya had taken their son and run — south, through territory they didn’t know, with injuries from the pursuit, arriving at Seven Peaks in the early days after the sect opened. Desperate. Bleeding. Carrying a boy whose gift the north called a curse.

Raven had taken them in. The mountain had become what the north refused to be: home.

But Elian had mentioned something. Once. Months ago. A faint presence in the root-network’s outer range — not a signal, not a communication, barely a whisper. Something far to the north that resonated with the same frequency as Elian himself. A Pillar Soul. Distant. Fading. A candle guttering at the edge of awareness.

The planetary anchoring system required more than the two Pillar Souls Raven knew of. The mathematics demanded it. The dimensional fabric needed anchors distributed across the continent, not clustered at one mountain. And somewhere in the frozen north, beyond the root-network’s reach, beyond the formation relay’s range, a child was probably dying the way Elian had been dying before Raven found him — spiritual essence draining, ley-line connection burning them alive from the inside.

She couldn’t reach them. Not yet. The Sanctum threat demanded her presence here. The preparations consumed every resource. The intelligence picture required her attention. And the north was two days’ flight away, into territory she didn’t know, among people she’d never met, in winter.

But the candle guttered. And candles that guttered eventually went out. And the mathematics of dimensional anchoring didn’t forgive the extinction of the anchors it required.

The north. The thread that couldn’t wait forever and had to wait for now.

The mountain. Sylvara’s roots reaching deeper than anyone had mapped. The root-network’s 80km surface awareness — the trees, the soil, the thousands of living connections that carried the mountain’s pulse through the territory. And below the network, below the mapped roots, below everything: the deep thing.

It had settled in the root-network hub. Ten meters below the boys’ room. Present. Patient. Reaching upward through Sylvara’s oldest channels with the pace of geology and the curiosity of something that had slept since before the Cataclysm and was now awake enough to wonder who was listening.

Elian and Aren watching together. The boys’ pact: tell Raven when it’s ready. Elian’s assessment: eyes still closed, but closer to opening. The mountain remembering what it used to be. The deep thing remembering what it used to be. The two of them — the mountain and its oldest root — approaching each other across 800 years of dormancy because the magic was returning and the sleeping things were waking, and some of the sleeping things were allies that the world had forgotten it had.

The deep thing wasn’t dangerous. Elian was certain. Raven trusted Elian’s certainty the way she trusted Aren’s frost: instinctively, because the boy’s connection to the root-network was deeper than her own and his assessment of its inhabitants was more accurate than any analysis she could perform from the surface.

Around her: the mountain. The nation. Thirty-five thousand people and the systems that sustained them — the Charter, the Ledger, the formation network, the Medicine Hall branches, the school, the Innovation Forge, the Anvil Corps, the gardens, the forges, and the corridors where the scanner listened for a heartbeat that didn’t belong.

Behind her eyes: the number. 23,000. The crescent. The heartbeat. The organic growth reaching for a healer who wrote about gold leaves. The fabricated men maintaining community infrastructure with zero-misalignment precision. The cousin who went silent. The contact who was told to shut a prince up. The tissue sample in the vault that grew toward living things because growing toward living things was all it knew how to do.

Two years. The seeds she’d planted — the sect, the nation, the alliance, the Anvil Corps, the root-network bridge, the detection systems, the preparations for threats she could name and threats she couldn’t — were growing. Upward. Toward the light.

The seeds the enemy had planted — the organic growth, the synchronization pulse, the fabricated men, the infiltration operation that was patient and organized and building something inside the eastern territories while she built something on the mountain above — were growing too. Outward. Into the dark.

Same soil. Same spiritual energy. Same returning magic. Seeds above and seeds below. Both growing. Both patient. Both building toward a harvest that neither could predict and neither could prevent.

The year turned. TC1854 became TC1855. The seam in time closed. The new year began in the dark because all new years began in the dark, and the dark was where things grew.

"Happy New Year," Raven said.

The pause. The star-metal body on her shoulder, processing the instruction to participate in a human ritual that his analytical framework classified as irrational and his operational experience classified as necessary.

The mountain. The overlook. The woman and the snake and the sword. Two years behind. Everything ahead.

Dawn would come. It always came. And when it came, the light would show what the dark had grown — the flowers and the thorns, the roots and the rot, the seeds beneath the mountain and the seeds beneath the Sanctum, all of them reaching for the surface, all of them about to break through.

The year turned. The seeds grew. The mountain held.
