Their exact words—planetary security." He paused, letting that land. "Lord Hadrian Wu is many things. Reckless isn’t one of them. When the Sanctum says stand down, every family stands down."

"Interesting." Raven’s expression had gone still in the particular way Kael was learning to read—not absence of thought but excess of it, calculations running behind those strange eyes faster than speech could follow. "The Sanctum has ignored imperial politics for centuries. What changed?"

"You did."

The words came out before he could soften them. Raven’s gaze sharpened.

"You’re warning the subject of a Sanctum investigation." Raven’s tone was unreadable. "That’s treason, by most definitions."
