The barracks were dark. Quiet, the way military quarters got quiet — not the absence of sound but the presence of discipline. Three hundred and twelve people sleeping in shifts, the off-duty cohort breathing with the synchronized rhythm of soldiers who’d learned to rest on command. Boots beneath bunks, aligned to the millimeter. Packs on hooks. Personal effects stored left-to-right, heaviest to lightest, exactly as Federation Regulation 14-C specified for deployable infantry.

Nobody had asked them to do this. Nobody had issued a regulation. They’d been at Seven Peaks for six days, sleeping in barracks that smelled like living wood instead of recycled air, eating food that tasted like food instead of nutritional efficiency paste, and still — the boots were aligned. The packs were on hooks.

Old habits didn’t die. They just followed you to better places.

Sera dressed in the dark. Her left leg — the cybernetic one, the one the Federation had installed after the Virescent Expanse incident seven years ago — calibrated silently as she stood. The seized mechanisms that had ground against her bones for months were gone now. Since the golden rain, the metal had changed. Not alive, exactly. But not inert either. She ran her hand down the calf plate. Warm. The metal was always warm now.

Sera arrived first. She always arrived first.

She walked the perimeter. Checked sight lines, structural integrity, exit routes — habits from a career that valued knowing exactly how quickly you could leave a room. The yard was open. Good. Three hundred and twelve people needed space. Especially three hundred and twelve people who hadn’t been in the open air for most of their adult lives.

The Federation didn’t believe in open air. It believed in corridors, bunkers, and performance metrics.

Coop arrived at 05:30, which was late for Coop.

"Morning." He moved differently these days. Sera had noticed within the first hour of meeting him at Seven Peaks — a man whose body was eighty-two years old and looked fifty, whose cybernetic eyes flickered with processing rhythms she’d learned to read the way you read a tide chart. Something had changed behind those eyes since the last time she’d been in the south. He moved like a man listening to a frequency nobody else could hear.

"You’re late," she said.

"I was calibrating." He didn’t explain what. The cybernetic eyes caught the morning light and held it a fraction too long, the way they always did — the mechanical irises adjusting to brightness with a precision that human eyes couldn’t match and a cadence that human eyes wouldn’t attempt.

"Calibrating what?"

"Everything." He looked at the barracks. Through the walls, she thought. Not metaphorically. Whatever Coop had become in the months since she’d left for the south, it included the ability to look at a building and see through it to the people inside. "They’re awake. Have been since 04:30. Nobody moved until you did."

"They were waiting for orders."

"They were waiting for you."

Sera said nothing. She didn’t argue the point because the point was accurate, and arguing accurate points was a waste of operational resources.

Raven came with the sun.

Not dramatically — she walked from the Verdant Spire along the lower terrace path, Veyr at her hip, the sword’s pommel flickering silver in the early light. The tiny snake on her left shoulder caught a ray of sun and gleamed like a needle made of starlight.

"Status?" Raven asked, and Sera appreciated that — the question before the greeting. A leader who prioritized the work.

"Three hundred and twelve soldiers, rested and fed. Barracks organized. First cohort assembled in—" she checked the formation-enhanced timepiece at her wrist — "fourteen minutes."

"Coop?"

"Here," he said from behind a data display he’d conjured from the yard’s formation network — a shimmering three-dimensional lattice of spiritual energy that mapped the barracks interior. Three hundred and twelve dots of light, each one a person. Each one, Sera knew, a name she could recite from memory.

"I’ve mapped the preliminary signatures," Coop continued. His eyes flickered — rapid processing, the cybernetic hardware doing what it did best: seeing patterns in data that shouldn’t have patterns. "Every soldier carries a Technomancer pathway. That much I confirmed on arrival. What I couldn’t see from a distance is the variance. Some pathways are wide open — the spiritual energy just needs permission to flow. Others are narrow. Some are practically sealed. The cybernetics seeded them all, but the growth has been... uneven."

The silver snake shifted on Raven’s shoulder. "Three hundred and twelve potential Technomancers is not a squad," it said, the voice carrying with the precise diction of something that had opinions about everything and the processing power to justify all of them. "It is a paradigm shift. I have updated my projections accordingly."

"What were the old projections?" Sera asked.

"That Craine would remain singular for approximately eighteen months. The revised timeline is... significantly compressed. I find this operationally interesting. Not exciting. Interesting."

Raven’s mouth twitched. "Let’s see what we have."

They came in groups of ten. Sera had organized the rotation — first cohort, second, third, cycling through the day so nobody stood idle for hours. Discipline was a tool, not a punishment. You kept soldiers sharp by keeping them purposeful.

Craine waited at the assessment station. He looked different from the man Sera had last seen in briefing reports — thinner, cleaner, the remaining cybernetics visible at his collar and temple where the spinal interface met skin. His left eye — the targeting system the Federation had welded to his optic nerve at age twenty-seven — tracked the approaching soldiers with a steadiness that wasn’t quite human and wasn’t quite machine. Something between.

He’d been the first. The only Technomancer on Ascara, for months. Now he stood at a table covered in raw materials — iron ore, copper sheets, formation crystals, carved wood, raw stone — and waited to find out if he was still alone.

The first group approached. Ten soldiers. Sera knew them all.

Private Kira Desh — 28, Ironridge Province, both arms replaced at the elbows after a munitions accident in her third year. She’d carried wounded through the jungle for four days on legs that seized every hundred meters, and she hadn’t complained once because complaining required breath she was using to walk.

Corporal Alek Voss — 34, Central District, augmented eyes like Coop’s but older-model — slower processing, harsher light response. He’d been a combat engineer before the southern campaign. Built bridges. Blew them up. Built them again. The Federation’s answer to every infrastructure problem: make a soldier do it.

Eight others behind them. Ten names. Ten service records. Ten people who’d been thrown away by the government that made them and walked north because a woman they’d known for eight days told them there was a mountain worth walking toward.

Coop stepped forward. "The assessment is simple," he said, addressing the ten with the casual authority of a man who’d spent sixty years being listened to and three years being listened to for entirely new reasons. "No cultivation aptitude testing. You’d all fail it — no spiritual roots, and that’s not an insult, it’s a fact. What we’re testing for is different."

He placed his hand on the table. Beside the raw materials. "Technomancer potential has three indicators. First: material resonance. Can you feel the properties of a material through spiritual energy contact? Not see them. Not analyze them. Feel them — the grain of the metal, the stress of the crystal, the memory of the stone."

Nobody moved. Ten soldiers standing at attention because attention was the default when you didn’t know what else to do.

"Second: blueprint retention. Can you hold a complex three-dimensional design in your mind without reference? Not a blueprint — a living image. Rotating. Complete. Every stress point, every joint, every atom."

Still nothing. But Sera saw it — the micro-shift in Kira Desh’s weight. The woman whose prosthetic arms had carried wounded through the jungle was leaning forward. Not much. Enough.

"Third: forge impulse. Does spiritual energy flow through your hands and into materials? Not through your dantian — you don’t have one that works the standard way. Through your hands. The connection point between you and the physical world."

Coop stepped back. Craine stepped forward.

"Pick something up," Craine said. No preamble. No explanation. The first Technomancer on Ascara, telling the potential second to just start. "Anything on the table. Whatever your hand goes to."

Kira Desh reached for the iron ore. Not the copper, not the crystal, not the wood. Iron. Her prosthetic fingers — Federation alloy, standard issue, inert since installation — closed around the chunk of raw ore.

The metal hummed.

Not loudly. Not visibly. But Sera heard it — a resonance that lived somewhere between sound and sensation, the way you could feel a formation array activating through the soles of your feet before the light appeared. The ore in Kira’s prosthetic hand vibrated at a frequency that made the air taste like forge smoke and thunderstorms.

Kira froze. The metal was warm. For the first time since the surgery that took her arms and gave her these in return, the prosthetics were warm.

"I can..." She stopped. Tried again. "The ore. It has... layers. I can feel layers. And a flaw. There’s a crack inside — a fault line from when it cooled. And the crystal structure around the fault is..." She looked at Craine. "It’s trying to be something. The iron wants to be something. I can feel what it wants."

Craine’s expression didn’t change. But his remaining hand — the organic one, the one the Federation hadn’t taken — pressed flat against the table, and Sera saw his fingers tremble.

"Yeah," he said. Quietly. "That’s what it feels like."

They assessed forty soldiers before noon. Sera kept the rotation moving — groups in, groups out, the rhythm of military processing applied to something that had never been processed before.

Not every result was Kira Desh.

Some soldiers picked up the materials and felt nothing. They held iron ore in their hands, and it was just iron ore — cold, heavy, inert. These soldiers set the materials down with expressions that ranged from disappointment to relief to a careful blankness that said I didn’t expect to be special, and I was right.

Some felt something. A tingle. A warmth. A sense of weight that had nothing to do with mass. They couldn’t articulate it — the vocabulary didn’t exist for what they were sensing. "It’s like... hearing a song in another room," one soldier said, and Coop marked him as Tier 2 — pathway present, latent, needing development.

And some were like Kira. Their hands touched metal, and the metal answered. A corporal who’d lost three fingers to frostbite held a copper sheet, and it folded itself into a flower. She stared at it. "I just wanted it to be pretty." A sergeant whose augmented spine interfaced with the formation crystal and began drawing energy through it in patterns that Coop later described as "instinctively efficient and structurally impossible." A private — quiet, barely spoke, had been a communications technician before the south — who held a piece of raw stone and listened to it, and when he set it down, the stone had hairline channels carved through it in patterns that matched the formation relay network’s primary frequency.

"He didn’t know what the relay frequency was," Coop told Raven during the midday break, his cybernetic eyes still processing the data they’d collected. "He’d never seen a formation diagram. His hands made the channels anyway. His forge impulse defaulted to the most useful pattern in his environment."

Raven stood at the edge of the training yard, watching the afternoon cohort assemble. 7T9 ran calculations on her shoulder, silver body motionless, processing visible only in the faint warmth he radiated when his systems were at peak load.

"How many so far?" she asked.

"Forty assessed. Eleven strong resonance — clear forge impulse, immediate material interaction. Twenty-two moderate — indicators present, latent, trainable. Seven dormant — pathways exist but deeply suppressed. May need time, may need a catalyst."

"And Craine?"

They watched him at the assessment table. The first Technomancer on Ascara, working with his fourth group of the day, showing the same patient intensity with each new soldier that he’d shown with the first. He didn’t rush. He didn’t celebrate. He stood beside each person as they touched the materials for the first time, and he waited — the way someone who’d been alone waits when they think they might not have to be alone anymore.

"Craine is performing at an exceptional level," 7T9 said. "His pedagogical instinct appears to be innate rather than trained. He understands the awakening process because he experienced it. This provides an empathic accuracy that formal training cannot replicate."

"He’s good with them," Raven translated.

"That is what I said."

"You said it with forty more words."

But the numbers were already telling a story.

The soldiers walked differently. Not all of them — not the ones who’d felt nothing, who’d returned to their bunks with the professional composure of people accustomed to negative results. But the ones who’d felt the ore hum. The ones whose prosthetics had gone warm. The ones who’d made a copper flower or a stone channel or simply stood at the table with their eyes wide and their hands shaking because the metal had spoken and they’d understood it.

Those soldiers walked like people who’d been told a door was locked and then watched it open.

Kira Desh stopped at the barracks entrance. Looked at Sera. She was still holding the iron ore — nobody had asked for it back, and she hadn’t put it down. Her prosthetic fingers cradled it the way you’d cradle something small and alive.

"Commander."

"Private."

"I could feel it. The iron. I could feel what it wanted to become."

Sera looked at the ore in Kira’s hands. At the warm metal of her prosthetics. At the expression on the face of a woman who’d carried wounded through a jungle on failing legs and hadn’t complained.

"What did it want to become?"

Kira turned the ore in her fingers. Slowly. The metal caught the last of the daylight and held it.

"Something useful."

Sera’s jaw tightened. She felt the muscles in her face do the thing they’d been doing since Seven Peaks — the pull toward an expression she’d spent thirty years of military service training out of her repertoire. The mouth wanting to curve. The cheeks wanting to lift.

Not yet.

But close.

"Get some rest, Private. We start again at dawn."

Kira nodded. Went inside. The iron ore still in her hands.

Sera stood at the entrance until the last light faded from the yard. Three hundred and twelve soldiers. Day one of assessment. Forty processed. Eleven with their lamps already lit. Twenty-two with wicks waiting for a spark. Seven with oil in the reservoir and no flame yet.

And two hundred and seventy-two still to go.

The mountain rose behind her, dark against the stars. Sylvara’s canopy caught the moonlight and held it the way the iron had held the sun — with patience, and purpose, and the quiet insistence of things that knew what they were meant to become.

Tomorrow. They’d find out what three hundred and twelve broken soldiers could build.
