Tianlei had discovered verticality.

He’d been crawling for weeks — the military-grade crawl of an infant who treated horizontal distance as a personal challenge. Across the room. Under the table. Behind the chair where Kael kept his diplomatic correspondence, which Tianlei had attempted to eat on three separate occasions, and which Kael now stored on a shelf the boy couldn’t reach. Couldn’t reach while crawling.

Standing changed the calculations.

Kael came into the room at 06:00 — his standard time, the prince’s discipline applied to the father’s schedule — and found Tianlei upright, both hands gripping the edge of the low table, legs trembling with the effort of supporting a body that had been horizontal for nine and a half months and was not entirely convinced about this new arrangement. The boy’s face carried the expression of someone who had committed to a course of action and was now processing the consequences: triumph, uncertainty, and a growing awareness that what goes up has limited options for what comes next.

"Ah," Kael said.

Tianlei looked at him. The triumph intensified. I am tall now. Acknowledge this.

"I see you."

Tianlei released one hand from the table to wave. Physics, which had been indulging him, reasserted its jurisdiction. He wobbled. Grabbed the edge again. Looked offended that gravity had opinions about his achievement.

The boy ignored this advice with the thoroughness of someone who had not yet learned that advice existed as a category of communication. He released the hand again. Wobbled again. This time, instead of grabbing the table, he took a step.

One step. Sideways. His left foot sliding along the floor while his right foot bore the weight, and his hands held the table’s edge in a grip that would have impressed a mountaineer. It was the most extraordinary thing Kael had ever seen.

He knelt. Eye level. The prince, on his knees on the floor of a residential quarter in a mountain nation that his family had tried to control, watching his son take a single sideways step along the edge of a table, and finding it more significant than any throne he’d ever been told he’d inherit.

"Again," he said.

Tianlei, who understood the word again because it was the word that preceded every repeated activity from block towers to porridge attempts, took another step. And another. Three steps along the table’s edge, each one a negotiation between ambition and balance that the boy resolved through sheer refusal to acknowledge failure as an option.

At the table’s corner, he ran out of edge. He stood, swaying, holding the corner with both hands, looking at the 2 meters of open floor between the table and Kael’s knees with the expression of a general surveying terrain he was not yet equipped to cross.

"Not yet," Kael said. "That part comes later."

Tianlei sat down. Not fell — sat. A controlled descent that suggested he’d been practicing when nobody was watching. He looked up at Kael from the floor with an expression that combined satisfaction with planning. I’ll be back.

"You have—" He wiped porridge from the boy’s chin. The boy evaded the cloth with the fluid head-movement of a fighter avoiding a strike. Kael adjusted the angle. The boy counter-adjusted. They performed this maneuver four times before the chin was clean.

"Your evasion technique is improving. I’ll inform Taron."

Tianlei grinned. The grin that was entirely his — assembled from genetics into something that neither parent had produced but both had contributed to. Wide. Certain. The expression of a person who had never doubted his place in the world because his place in the world had never given him reason to doubt.

Underneath the formality — in the specific phrases his mother used when she meant something beyond the words — a second message.

"Classified" in the Imperial Guard meant one of three things: intelligence operation (possible — Serian was capable), disciplinary action (unlikely — Serian was exemplary), or someone above the inquiry’s authority had decided the information shouldn’t be shared (concerning — because the list of people above a prince’s authority was very short).

Kael drafted a second inquiry. More specific. Directed not to the Guard’s administrative system but to the district commander at Greymere personally — a Colonel Harwick whom Kael had met during a diplomatic function and who owed the Xuán family a favor that was old enough to be reliable.

He sealed the inquiry. Filed it for the personal courier’s next run. Sat back.

On the floor, Tianlei had found a wooden block and was hitting it against the leg of the desk with rhythmic determination. The sound was percussive, repetitive, and produced with the focused intensity of a musician who had discovered his instrument and intended to perform whether the audience was willing or not.

Tianlei dropped the block. Reached for Kael’s hand — the hand resting on the desk’s edge while the other held a pen. Small fingers closing around the index finger. The grip of a child who had no idea about classified assignments or encoded warnings or the specific weight of a cousin’s silence.
