She told the gate processing clerk that she’d been working in a village thirty kilometers from the Sanctum perimeter until the animals started dying, the patients stopped getting better, and the feeling in the air changed to something she couldn’t name but couldn’t ignore.

She wanted shelter. She wanted to practice. She wanted to be somewhere that wasn’t slowly going wrong.

The scanner embedded in the main gate corridor — twenty-three formation crystal nodes in the walls and floor, running continuously, passively — read her spiritual signature as she walked through.

Green.

The processing clerk noted her name, her origin, and her stated purpose. Assigned her temporary housing in the civilian quarter. Directed her to the Medicine Hall for professional registration.

Standard procedure. Another refugee from the east. Seven Peaks had been processing them for months.

He came from the east-southeast — a man in his forties with two pack animals and a sample case of formation-enhanced tools. Household goods, mostly. Heating plates, preservation containers, and self-sharpening blades. The kind of merchandise that sold well in communities where spiritual energy was thick enough to power formation-enhanced items, but supply chains from the Imperial capital hadn’t reached.

He told the gate processing clerk that he’d heard about Seven Peaks’ growing population and saw a market opportunity. Commercial. Uncomplicated. The kind of motivation that didn’t require scrutiny because it explained itself.

Green.

Temporary merchant housing. Directed to the commercial quarter for trade registration. Standard procedure.

The scholar arrived on the twentieth.

She came from due east — younger than the other two, maybe twenty-five, with ink-stained fingers and a worn leather case that held, she said, her research notes on cultivation methodology. She’d been studying the True Path system from publicly available sources and wanted to observe the teaching firsthand. Academic interest. The kind of request the sect received weekly from institutions across the Empire.

Green.

Visiting scholar housing. Directed to the library for research access registration.

Three strangers. Three directions. Three days. Three green lights.

Naida spread the arrival reports across her desk and looked at them the way she looked at everything that landed in front of her: as if the paper itself might be lying.

The Shadow Pavilion office was cold. The formation channels kept it that way. Naida’s three exits — one visible, two not — were sealed. The map of the crescent settlements covered the eastern wall, pins and green lines, and the pale circle of the organic growth perimeter annotated in her precise handwriting.

Three arrivals from the east in three days. Each one plausible. Each one alone unremarkable. Together, they were a pattern — but a pattern that could also be a coincidence. People fled the eastern districts. Merchants found new markets. Scholars visited institutions. These things happened every week. Seven Peaks had processed over a thousand civilian arrivals in the past year. Three more was noise.

Unless it wasn’t.

Naida pulled the corridor incident file. She’d read it enough times that the words had lost their capacity to surprise, but not their capacity to instruct. The visitor who’d called himself Garrett. From Millhaven — except Millhaven’s scanner had found zero positives when they’d checked, meaning his story about originating there was likely fabricated bait. He’d arrived with intelligence about eastern settlements, information designed to get him close to Raven. Scanner read green. Twenty-three formation crystal nodes registered his spiritual signature as human, alive, uncompromised.

He’d walked through the gate, through the residential quarter, through Sylvara’s corridors, and made it to within arm’s reach of Raven before the living wood disrupted whatever was inside him.

Green. He’d read green. And he’d almost killed the sect leader.

Eighty-five percent confidence. One in six walks through undetected. The number was a probability, not a promise. And the one in six who’d walked through last time had come within seconds of changing the course of everything Seven Peaks was building.

The healer, the merchant, the scholar. Any one of them could be the next one in six. Or none. Or all three, if the scanner’s miss rate was worse than calculated against newer, more refined organisms. The Sanctum learned. The organisms improved. The fabrication at Ashford Crossing had gained fifteen percent behavioral fidelity in three months. If the biological architecture was improving at the same rate as the behavioral mimicry, the scanner’s eighty-five percent might already be optimistic.

She opened a new report. Began writing.

Coop arrived at the Shadow Pavilion office at Naida’s summons. He read the three arrival reports without expression. His cybernetic eyes flickered through the processing data — the spiritual signature readings, the gate corridor timestamps, the stated origins and purposes.

"Tell me what you see," Naida said.

"Three arrivals from the east in a five-day window. Different origins, different purposes, different demographics. No visible connection." He set the reports down. "Which is exactly what I’d design if I wanted to get multiple operatives through a gate that stopped the last one."

"The corridor visitor was a single point of failure. One operative, one target, one chance."

"And it failed. The approach was sound — fabricated identity, legitimate intelligence to trade, plausible cover story. But it depended on one person getting close to one target, and when that person was compromised, the entire operation collapsed." Coop’s cybernetic eyes were still. Processing completed. Conclusion reached. "Whatever is directing these things doesn’t repeat a failure mode. It adapts. One operative failed. The next iteration uses three — independent, unconnected, each with their own vector of approach. If one is caught, the other two have no visible link. No conspiracy to unravel. No single thread to pull."

"Redundancy."

"Distributed redundancy. And possibly something else." He picked up the merchant’s report. Read it again. "The corridor visitor had a specific mission — get close to Raven. These three don’t appear to have a shared objective. A healer goes to the Medicine Hall. A merchant goes to the commercial quarter. A scholar goes to the library. Three different access points to three different parts of the mountain’s infrastructure."

"Reconnaissance."

"Comprehensive reconnaissance. If you wanted to map Seven Peaks’ capabilities — medical, commercial, educational — you’d send exactly these three profiles. Each one has a legitimate reason to be in the area that yields the most intelligence about their sector."

Naida pulled the map from the wall. Traced the three arrival routes — northeast, east-southeast, due east. Converging on Seven Peaks from a fan-shaped arc that covered seventy degrees of the eastern horizon.

"The question," she said, "is whether the Sanctum knows about the scanner."

Coop was quiet for a moment. His lattice processing — the invisible calculation that happened behind the cybernetic hardware. "The return channel operatives have been walking through our territory for months. Three of them live at Ashford Crossing, where a scanner is deployed. They pass through scanner range regularly."

"And every eighteen to twenty-five days, they walk east and report everything they’ve observed."

"Including the scanner’s existence. Its location. Its operational hours. The fact that it’s embedded in the gate corridor."

"So they know."

"They know we have a detection system. They may or may not know its capabilities. They may or may not know it reads at eighty-five percent confidence." Coop’s eyes stopped flickering. "But they know the corridor visitor failed. And they know something at Seven Peaks caught him — or triggered him. If these three are test vectors, they’re here to map our detection capabilities. Walk through the scanner, see what happens, report back."

"And if they’re just a healer, a merchant, and a scholar?"

"Then we’ve wasted resources on surveillance, and nobody gets hurt."

"I don’t waste resources."

"No. You don’t."

Raven received the briefing at the command center. Naida presented. Coop supplemented. Thorne listened.

The privacy formations hummed. The progress board sat behind Raven — the Sanctum’s number facing the room, the nation’s metrics facing the wall.

"Options," Raven said.

"We turn them away," Thorne offered. "Cite security concerns. Redirect to satellite settlements outside Sylvara’s perimeter."

"And confirm to the Sanctum that arrivals from the east receive special treatment. Which tells them we know about the eastern threat. Which changes their approach."

"We process them normally and assign surveillance," Naida said. "Shadow Pavilion embeds a dedicated observer on each one. Twenty-four-hour coverage, behavioral documentation, movement tracking inside the territory."

"For how long?"

"Until they leave or until we have enough data to make a determination. Weeks. Maybe longer."

"Three dedicated agents for an indefinite period. That’s resources pulled from other operations."

"Yes." Naida didn’t apologize for the cost. Costs were her department. So were the consequences of not paying them.

Raven looked at the table. Three arrival reports. Three green lights. Three people who might be exactly what they appeared to be — a tired healer, an opportunistic merchant, a curious scholar. Or three probes sent by an organism that had learned from its failure and was testing the defenses with something subtler than a single assassin.

"Route all three through Sylvara’s core architecture," she said. "The visitor from Millhaven held together through the residential quarter but came apart near the Verdant Spire. Sylvara’s living wood disrupted whatever was inside him. If there’s something inside any of these three, sustained proximity to the densest living wood will stress it."

"And if that triggers another emergence?" Thorne asked.

"Then we know. And we’re ready this time."

"The healer has been assigned to the Medicine Hall," Naida said. "Living wood throughout. The merchant is in the commercial quarter — mixed construction, less coverage. The scholar is using the library — Sylvara’s oldest growth after the Verdant Spire."

"Move the merchant’s housing to the residential quarter. Cite an upgrade — new arrivals, better accommodations, goodwill gesture. Get him into living wood." 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

"Done."

"Surveillance on all three. Behavioral documentation. And Coop — I want lattice reads if you can get close enough without being obvious."

"The merchant’s trade registration requires an interview. I can sit in." His eyes flickered. "The healer will need a professional assessment before she can practice. Mira’s team handles that. I’ll observe."

"The scholar?"

"Library access requires an orientation. I’ll give it personally."

Raven nodded. Three strangers. Three green lights. Three layers of detection — scanner, surveillance, lattice. And underneath all of it, Sylvara’s living wood pressing against whatever was or wasn’t inside them, the passive test that no organism could prepare for because you couldn’t know what a living building would do until you were inside it.

"We don’t turn people away," Raven said. "That’s how you build a fortress. We’re building a nation. Nations take the risk of opening their gates."

"And nations that don’t watch what walks through those gates don’t stay nations for long," Naida said.

"Then we watch. And we keep watching until we’re sure. However long that takes." She looked at the three reports — the healer, the merchant, the scholar. People with names and histories and reasons for being here, any of which might be real and any of which might be the most elaborate fabrication the Sanctum had produced yet. "I won’t build a place that turns away healers because they came from the wrong direction. That’s the Empire. That’s what we left."

"The Empire didn’t have something eating its eastern border," Thorne said. Not an argument — a reminder.

"No. The Empire had something eating it from inside and didn’t notice for eight hundred years." Raven picked up the reports. Stacked them. Handed them to Naida. "Watch them. Watch them well. And if Sylvara’s wood does what it did to the last one, make sure there are no civilians in the corridor."

Naida took the reports. Nodded once. Left through the visible exit — a concession to normality that she made only when leaving the command center, because even the Shadow Pavilion director walked through doors sometimes.

The healer unpacked her medical satchel in the room that the residential quarter provided. The walls were warm — living wood, Sylvara’s architecture radiating the steady heat that residents stopped noticing after the first week. She hung her coat on the peg by the door, sat on the bed, and pressed her hands together in her lap. After a moment, she stood again. Opened the window. Looked at the mountain — the terraces, the gardens, the distant shape of Sword Mountain against the evening sky. Her shoulders lowered. Half an inch. The controlled release of someone who might, possibly, be allowing herself to feel safe.

Or the performance of someone who knew what safety was supposed to look like.

The merchant inspected his new accommodations — the upgrade from commercial housing to residential quarter, the better light, the wider room. He ran his fingers along the wall. Smooth. Warm. Alive. "Nice place," he said to no one. He began unpacking his sample case with the practiced efficiency of someone who’d set up a temporary shop in a hundred different towns.

The scholar opened her research case in the library. The living-wood desk grew a small lip to hold her inkwell steady — Sylvara’s automatic accommodation, the architecture responding to need. The scholar looked at the lip for a moment. Then she smiled — a small, delighted smile, the kind a person makes when something they’ve read about turns out to be real. She touched the desk with her fingertips. Gently. The way you touch something you don’t want to damage.

Three people in three rooms in a building that breathed. The walls watched. The roots listened. Somewhere in the Shadow Pavilion office, three files sat open on Naida’s desk — one for each stranger, one for each green light, one for each question that couldn’t be answered until enough time had passed for the answer to reveal itself.

And somewhere east, across three hundred kilometers of territory that was slowly going dark, the organism waited for the data it had sent three bodies to collect.

Or three people had come to Seven Peaks because the world was changing, and they needed somewhere to be. And the walls watched anyway, because that was the cost of keeping the gates open.

Both could be true. That was the worst part.
