Their knowledge of biological manipulation is unmatched on Ascara." Shen paused. "They were thrown away, Sect Leader. They built something from the wreckage."

The parallel hung in the air between them. Shen didn’t need to articulate it. A civilization built by the rejected. A nation made from what others discarded. The Confederacy and Seven Peaks, separated by a continent and a thousand years, built on the same foundation.

"How divided are they?"

"Profoundly. One hundred and forty-nine tribes, each isolated by animal trait and environment. Forest dwellers don’t cooperate with mountain clans. River peoples distrust desert nomads. Raven filed this. All of it. The pull in her soul space pulsed — south, south — and the information Shen had provided was arranging itself into something that looked less like reconnaissance and more like a mission.

"Thank you," Raven said.

Shen studied her. "You’re going south."

"Yes."

"Alone?"

"Not entirely."

"Months."

Thorne’s expression didn’t change. Sixteen years of Imperial Guard discipline meant his expressions rarely did. But his hand shifted on Voidstrike’s hilt — a micro-adjustment that meant he was already planning contingencies.

Naida: "I’ll need a communication schedule. Formation relay range to the south is uncertain. If you go beyond reach, I want dead-drop protocols established."

Naida, behind Thorne, made a sound that might have been a cough.

Shen Wuyan said nothing. But Aurethyn purred louder, which Shen would later insist was a coincidence and which nobody believed.

Coop paused at the door. His cybernetic eyes flickered once — the processing burst of a Matrix evaluating an input and filing it under a category that didn’t require verbal confirmation. "We’ll be ready when you come back," he said.

Elian didn’t say anything. He slid off the root-arch and crossed the garden and wrapped his arms around Raven’s waist — not because he was scared, not because he needed reassurance, but because he was six and his mother was leaving and holding on was the only language that mattered.

She held him. Felt Sylvara’s roots hum beneath her feet — the tree acknowledging the departure, the temporary absence of the woman who’d built the mountain and was now trusting the mountain to stand without her.

"Come back, Mama," Elian whispered. "Come back."

"I will. I always do."
