"Visitor at the main gate," Thorne said through the relay. "From Millhaven. Says he has sensitive information. Wants to speak with you directly."

Raven set down Silas’s containment specifications. The reservoir operation was two days from ready — Silas’s formation work was precise, Coop’s staging documentation was complete, and Naida’s assets were in position. Two more days.

"I’ll see him. Send him to the reception terrace."

She found him waiting at the gate’s inner edge. A man in his thirties, road-dusty, the weathering of someone who’d walked the Millhaven route. He held his hands clasped in front of him — the way people held their hands when they were trying to look calm and mostly succeeding.

"Sect Master. Thank you for seeing me." He inclined his head. "My name is Garrett. I work the trade route between Millhaven and Ashford Crossing. I’ve seen things on the eastern road that I think you need to know about, but I couldn’t say it over the relay. I don’t know who listens."

"What kind of things?"

"People. Behaving strangely. Men I’ve known for years who don’t seem... right. I thought I was imagining it at first, but it’s been months, and it’s getting worse, and someone told me that if I really thought something was wrong, I should tell you and not anyone else."

Raven studied him. The concern on his face looked genuine — the furrowed brow, the tension in the jaw, the voice that dropped on not anyone else the way people’s voices dropped when they were sharing something they’d been carrying alone.

"Follow me. We’ll talk in my office."

She walked. He followed. Across the reception terrace, past the morning patrol coming off their rotation, past the garden where Elian and Bryn were doing something with the flower beds that involved more giggling than cultivation. Aren was sitting against the garden wall with his back to the living wood, the frost patterns on his hands geometric and still — the boy at rest, watching his siblings play, the guardian who guarded by proximity.

"I appreciate this," Garrett said behind her. "I know you’re busy. I tried to talk to the Millhaven coordinator first, but she said resource concerns go through the standard process, and this isn’t a resource concern. It’s... I don’t know what it is."

They crossed the terrace. Down the steps to the lower path. Past the Innovation Forge, where hammering sounded through open windows — someone working on something that would probably become a patent and would definitely become a mess, based on the quality of the cursing.

"People who come back from trips and something about them is off," Garrett continued. His voice had the cadence of someone who’d been rehearsing this speech on the 40-kilometer walk. "Their wives notice it. The children notice it. A man I’ve traded with for six years — Alden, decent man, always haggled too long over root vegetables — went to visit family at Stonecroft. Three days. Came back and he doesn’t haggle anymore. Pays whatever’s asked. Doesn’t laugh at the same things. His wife says he sleeps different. Doesn’t move at night. Just lies there."

Raven listened. The intelligence officer’s ear catching every detail. Alden from Millhaven. Three-day absence. Behavioral change. The wife noticing. The same pattern. Another red dot that hadn’t been flagged yet because the crescent’s surveillance didn’t extend to every community.

"There are others?" she asked.

"Two more that I’m sure about. Maybe four. I started paying attention after Alden, and once you start looking..." He trailed off. The trailing off of a man who had started looking and hadn’t liked what he’d found. "Nobody wants to say it out loud because it sounds mad. You can’t tell someone their husband is wrong without sounding like you’ve lost your mind. But I’ve been walking that road for three years, and I know these people, and they’re wrong, Sect Master. Something happened to them."

Through the archway into the Verdant Spire.

The Verdant Spire’s corridor closed around them. Living wood. The walls that were also roots, the surfaces pulsing with the warm amber bioluminescence of Sylvara’s distributed consciousness. The air dense with the particular quality of a building that breathed and grew and was, at every level, alive.

Raven was 4 meters ahead of him, her mind already composing the relay message to Naida — Millhaven, at least three more cases, dispatch surveillance — when the sound came from behind her. Not a sound she heard — a sound she felt. The displacement of air. The disruption of the corridor’s ambient hum. Something changing in the space between her back and the man walking 4 meters behind her. Something that 99 lifetimes of surviving registered at the level of the spine.

She was already turning when she heard the gasp.

Not a word. Not a cry. A gasp — the involuntary exhalation of a body whose control system had just experienced catastrophic failure. The sound of a man who had been walking and talking and breathing normally and was suddenly, in the space between one footstep and the next, not.

Raven completed the turn. Veyr was in her hand. She didn’t remember drawing it. The sword responded to the spine’s signal the way the spine responded to the threat — before the conscious mind finished deciding there was one.

The man was standing where he’d been standing. Three and a half meters away. Still upright. Still in the corridor. But the face—

The face was wrong.

Not subtly wrong. Not the ambiguous wrongness of a person having a bad day or a medical episode, or a moment of confusion. The face was malfunctioning. The muscles moving independently of each other — the left side pulling down while the right side pulled up, the mouth opening and closing without producing sound, and the eyes blinking at different speeds. The hands — still clasped in front of him — were shaking. Not trembling. Vibrating. The fingers blurring with a speed that human musculature couldn’t produce.

Sylvara’s walls flared. The bioluminescence surging from warm amber to bright gold, the living wood reacting to something in its corridor with an urgency that Raven had never seen from the tree’s architecture. The walls pulsing. The roots beneath the floor thrumming with a frequency that Raven felt through her boots.

The man opened his mouth. What came out wasn’t a word. It was a sound — low, wet, vibrating — that the human vocal apparatus wasn’t designed to make.

He lunged.

The body covering the distance in a movement that had no windup and no biomechanical preparation. One instant standing. The next, airborne. The entire body committed to closing the 3.5 meters between him and Raven with a totality that looked less like an attack and more like a system executing its final instruction before shutdown.

His skin greyed mid-air. The color draining from his face and hands simultaneously, not fading but emptying, the tissue consuming itself from the inside. The body was still traveling toward her, but the body was changing — deflating, collapsing, the mass disappearing into whatever was taking it. The face — the face that had been concerned and genuine and furrowed with worry about his eastern neighbors — losing its structure. The cheekbones emerging through thinning skin. The eyes sinking.

What hit the corridor floor wasn’t a man.

The shape collapsed 2 meters from Raven’s feet. Clothes settling over geometry that no longer filled them. The skin splitting between the shoulder blades — a clean line, a designed exit, the sound of something engineered to open — and something pushed through the gap.

Armored. Reddish-brown. A curved shell, wet and gleaming. Legs unfolding — six, jointed, the tips finding stone. Mandibles extending from the front of a body that had been inside a man’s skull and was now in the corridor of the most alive building on the mountain. The creature emerging from the husk the way a fist emerged from a sleeve — sudden, complete, leaving the sleeve empty behind it.

The husk crumbled. Ash. The body that had been Garrett from Millhaven becoming grey powder that settled onto empty work clothes. No blood. No bone. No tissue. Ash.

The creature was on the floor. Compact. The size of a terrier. The carapace catching Sylvara’s golden light. The compound eyes — dark, reflective — finding Raven with the speed of something that had been aimed at her since before it emerged.

It charged.

Dragon fire hit it. The golden-white blast — instinctive, the creative essence that had unmade shadowspawn and melted void-hardened carapace and burned through things that shouldn’t burn — struck the creature’s shell at point-blank range. The corridor blazed. The smell — chitin and something else, something organic and chemical and wrong — filled the space.

The fire scorched the carapace. Blackened it. Cracked the leading edge. The creature screamed — a frequency that made Sylvara’s walls shudder and the bioluminescence spike to white.

The fire didn’t stop it.

The creature came through the flame. Legs driving. Mandibles open. The attack angle low — going for her legs, the armored body aimed beneath the fire’s arc.

Veyr intercepted. The blade meeting the mandible strike with a force that jolted Raven’s arms to the shoulders. The mandibles closed on formation steel — the grinding, the pressure, the sound of biological weaponry testing metallurgical engineering. For a heartbeat, the contest was equal. The creature’s jaw strength pushing. The blade holding.

Raven wrenched Veyr free. The creature came again — same angle, same speed, adjusted 20 degrees left. It had processed the first exchange. Adapted the approach. Between one attack and the next, it had learned.

She didn’t give it time to learn again.

Sky-surfing technique. Half a second airborne. Above and behind. The creature’s head below her — the junction between carapace and mandible assembly, the articulation point, the hinge.

Veyr came down.

The blade entered the neck joint and passed through. The spiritual bond — the resonance between sword and wielder that concentrated force beyond the physical — driving the edge through chitin and tissue and the things beneath that had no name.

The head separated. Hit the floor. The mandibles opened once.

Then: dissolution.

The head softened. Greyed. The structure collapsing inward, the material becoming powder, the compound eyes losing their dark facets, and crumbling. Three seconds and the head was dust.

The body followed. The carapace folding. The legs curling. The mass converting to the same grey powder that everything else had become — the creature unmade by its own biology, the self-destruction as engineered as everything else about it.

Five seconds. The corridor held empty clothes, grey ash, and a scorch mark.

Nothing else.

No body. No creature. No shell. No mandible. No evidence. The thing that had been inside a man and the man it had been inside, both erased. Both reduced to powder that was already settling into the stone’s grain, becoming indistinguishable from dust.

Raven stood in the corridor.

Veyr in her hand. The violet glow fading. The living wood’s bioluminescence settling from alarm-white back to amber, the tree’s immune response dimming as the foreign presence dissolved. Sylvara recognizing that the thing was gone. The building returning to itself.

Her heartbeat was fast. Her hands were steady. The shaking would come later. It always came later — the body’s delayed admission that it had been closer to dying than the combat reflexes allowed it to process in real time. For now: the adrenaline holding. The clarity holding. The woman who had fought across lifetimes standing in a corridor that smelled like burned chitin and ash.

She looked at the clothes on the floor. The work clothes of a man who’d walked from Millhaven to tell her about people acting strangely on the eastern road. Who’d had a name — Garrett — and a story about a man named Alden who didn’t haggle over root vegetables anymore and a wife who said he slept different.

Was any of it real? Was Garrett real? Was the concern real? Had a man named Alden actually changed, or had the creature constructed the story from the same database of facts that let it walk and talk and smile and hold its hands clasped in front of it like a nervous civilian?

She’d never know. The man who could have answered was ash on the floor. The thing that had built the story was dust. The truth had dissolved with everything else.

The sound of running. Thorne. The gate guards. Disciples from the patrol who’d heard the dragon fire and the scream that Sylvara’s walls had amplified through the living wood until every person within 100 meters knew something terrible had happened in the Verdant Spire’s corridor.

Thorne arrived first. Took in the scene. The ash. The clothes. The scorch mark. Raven with the sword. The particular quality of a corridor that had held violence 60 seconds ago and was pretending it hadn’t.

"Something was inside him," Raven said. "When he got close to the living wood, it lost control. It consumed the body and came out. It came for me."

"Where is it?"

"Ash. Both of them. The man and the thing. Nothing left."

Thorne looked at the floor. At the clothes lying flat like a person-shaped stain. At the powder that was all that remained of a visitor from Millhaven and the thing that had been riding behind his face.

"The scanner—"

"Read green."

The silence that followed held the weight of a security system that had been built to find exactly this and had failed in the one corridor where failure meant someone reaching the Sect Master. Thorne’s face — the security chief’s professional composure — held. But his eyes moved to the scorch mark, to the ash, to the empty clothes, and the eyes said what the face wouldn’t: this happened inside my perimeter.

"Get Coop. Mira. Taron. Naida. Everyone." Raven sheathed Veyr. "The reservoir operation is cancelled. The variable came to us."

She walked toward the command center. Behind her, Thorne was already issuing orders — seal the corridor, formation barriers, evidence preservation (what evidence? the ash?), witness statements from the gate guards. The security chief doing what the security chief did: containing the aftermath, managing the information, building the wall between what happened and what the population knew.

The corridor behind her settling. The ash settling. Sylvara’s glow returning to the steady amber of a building that had identified a foreign body inside itself and would remember the frequency forever.

The only proof was the witnesses.

The only evidence was ash and empty clothes.

And the knowledge — bought in 30 seconds of violence that started with a gasp and ended with dust — that the things growing in the east were inside people and the people were already gone and the things came out and when you killed them they erased themselves and when you didn’t kill them they came for you.

Thirty-one confirmed. In the crescent. In the settlements. In the territory.

The one that came today got through the gate and walked through the corridor and followed her into the Verdant Spire and would have reached her office if the building hadn’t been more alive than the thing inside the man could handle.

How many more wouldn’t walk into a living building first?

The question followed her to the command center. The question and the ash and the empty clothes and the place between her shoulder blades where the gasp had landed and where the cold wouldn’t leave.
