But shadowspawn weren’t conventional threats.

The disciples moved. Smooth transitions, good footwork, blades coming up at the right angles. Taron walked the lines with Stormheart sheathed at his hip, the longsword’s tempest core a low vibration against his leg, and looked for the thing that numbers couldn’t capture.

A disciple named Harlow — solid Foundation Anchoring, reliable in drills, good instincts — executed a textbook lateral strike at his training partner. Perfect form. And then, for a fraction of a second, his eyes flicked sideways. Checking the shadows along the arena’s western wall, where the morning light didn’t reach.

He wasn’t looking at anything real. He was looking for something that lived in his memory — the recording crystal footage from Day One. Skulkers emerging from dead trees. A hundred void-constructs coordinating in real time. Raven’s ribs breaking.

He let the words land. "Against conventional enemies, half a second is recoverable. Against Skulkers, it’s fatal. They read hesitation the way wolves read limping."

Silence. The kind that meant he’d hit the wound precisely.

"So we fix it."

He turned to the formation technicians stationed along the arena’s perimeter. "Kill the lights."

The arena plunged into darkness.

Not complete darkness — Silas’s formations generated a dim, gray twilight that preserved just enough visibility to see shapes without defining them. The kind of light that existed at the edge of dead forests. The kind that shadowspawn lived in.

His hands shook. Visibly. The tremor ran from his fingers to his wrists to his forearms, and every disciple in the arena could see it because Taron had positioned Kade exactly where the dim formation-light caught the blade’s movement.

Kade engaged the first construct. His strike was clean — no hesitation, no flinch, blade meeting shadow-form at the precise angle Taron had drilled into them for a week. The construct dissolved. He pivoted. Engaged the second. Clean. Third. Clean. Hands shaking the entire time. Every single strike delivered through the tremor, not despite it.

He finished the sequence and returned to formation. Said nothing. Didn’t need to.

Three hundred and eleven people had just watched a man fight with fear running through his body like current through a wire, and not one of his strikes had been late.

"Being afraid is normal," Taron said. "Stopping is not."

He looked across the darkened arena. At the constructs still flickering in the gloom. At the disciples standing in twilight with weapons drawn and fear in their chests, and the beginning of something harder than fear taking root beneath it.

"Again."

The command center was empty except for Raven and a man who’d existed for longer than most civilizations.

Kairos sat in a chair he’d apparently developed opinions about. His posture suggested a being who’d spent eternity standing and found seated positions philosophically suspicious. The silver runes on his black robes had dimmed over the days since his arrival — the last traces of cosmic authority fading as Ascara’s laws settled more completely around his mortal frame.

"What happens after?" Raven asked.

She’d closed the privacy formations herself. No recording crystals. No witnesses. The command center’s display table showed the progress board’s glow, numbers, and checkmarks casting blue-white light across the stone walls.

"After the facilities. After the wave. After the immediate crisis. What does the world look like in a year?"

Kairos was quiet for a moment. His ice-blue eyes caught the display light and held it in a way that reminded her, uncomfortably, of formation crystals storing energy.

"Different," he said. "Fundamentally, structurally different. The wave doesn’t restore the world as it was. It restores the world as it should be. Spiritual energy at densities this planet hasn’t experienced in ten thousand years. Cultivation that currently takes months will require weeks. Children born in the wave’s aftermath will carry spiritual roots as a birthright rather than a gift."

"The golden generation."

"Among other things." He laced his fingers together — a gesture he’d adopted recently, as if discovering that idle hands needed occupation. "Beasts that have been dormant for centuries will wake. Flora that the Cataclysm suppressed will return. The ecology of this planet is going to reorganize itself around a new equilibrium, and that process will be violent."

"We’ve planned for that. Shen Wuyan’s survival guide. Silas’s agricultural wards. Taron’s combat training."

"You’ve planned for the natural consequences. I’m concerned about the political ones."

Raven waited.

"When technology fails and spiritual energy surges, the existing power structure inverts." Kairos spoke with the clinical precision of someone who’d watched this pattern repeat across worlds. "Cultivators become essential. Non-cultivators become vulnerable. The people who controlled society through institutional power — bureaucracies, military command, economic leverage — find that their tools no longer function. The people who were marginalized — commoners with cultivation potential, anyone with spiritual sensitivity — suddenly have the only currency that matters."

"And the people at the top won’t let go quietly."

"They never do. The Sanctum and the Emperor will attempt to control the transition. Position themselves as essential intermediaries. Offer protection in exchange for obedience. Restrict access to cultivation knowledge. Frame the chaos as proof that only established institutions can maintain order."

Raven leaned back in her chair. "They’ll use fear. The same way they always have."

"As every power structure has done since the first civilizations." Kairos’s gaze was steady. "The question is whether your alternative is ready."

Your alternative. Not the alternative. His.

Seven Peaks. The Luminous Charter. Consumption taxes instead of income extraction. Transparent finances displayed on crystal boards for anyone to read. Stewardship over ownership. Inverse voting that made negative campaigning self-defeating. Education streaming that placed children by strength rather than sorting them by birth.

A governance framework built by a seventeen-year-old and a room full of people who’d collectively decided that the way things had always been done was insufficient justification for continuing to do them.

"It’s not ready," Raven said. "It’s a framework governing thirteen thousand people in a territory the size of a small country. It hasn’t been tested against famine, plague, invasion, or the kind of institutional pressure that eight celestial families and a millennium-old shadow council can bring to bear."

"No," Kairos agreed. "It hasn’t. But it exists. And when the wave hits and the Empire’s systems fail while yours continue functioning — because your systems run on spiritual energy and formations rather than the technology that’s about to die — every person on this continent will see the difference."

The realization settled through her slowly. Not a new thought — she’d known, intellectually, that Seven Peaks was building something larger than a sect. But hearing it stated with the weight of cosmic perspective behind it sharpened the edges.

The facility strikes weren’t just about saving children. They were about demonstrating, under the worst possible conditions, that a different way of doing things worked. That you could govern without hoarding power. Defend without demanding obedience. Build without exploiting.

"If we survive the wave," she said.

"If you survive the wave," Kairos confirmed, "you become the proof of concept that every reform movement on this continent has been waiting for."

No pressure, then.

Raven looked at the progress board. Numbers and checkmarks. Relay communicators and first-responders, evidence caches and seed stock coverage percentages. The unglamorous machinery of a civilization preparing for the end of the world it knew and the beginning of something it couldn’t predict.

"One foot in front of the other," she said.

Kairos almost smiled. "You say that frequently."

"It’s the only strategy that scales."

Not entirely. She was terrified.

Then she stood. Ruffled his hair. And went back to work.

Aren watched her go from his seat on the bench, apple core balanced on one knee. His ice-blue eyes tracked her all the way to the garden gate with an expression that belonged to someone much older than six — not worried, not sad, but understanding in the way that Northern children understood winter. It came. You prepared. You endured.

He didn’t say anything. He didn’t need to.

He put his arm around Elian’s shoulders, and the two of them sat together in the garden while the world prepared for what was coming.

Set down the stylus. Stood in the silence. Then she turned off the display, walked to the residential quarter, and found Mei sitting cross-legged outside the boys’ door with a book and a cold cup of tea.

"They’re asleep," Mei said quietly. "Aren talked Elian into a game of riddles until he forgot about being sad. Took about forty minutes."

"Thank you."
