"Northerners don’t schedule. They come when the walking’s done."

Raven was in the command center when the alert came. She set down the report she was reading — Naida’s latest on the three eastern arrivals, all still reading green after five days, all still under surveillance — and went to the gate.

Bjorn was already there. He’d been there since dawn, sitting on the stone bench outside the northern approach with a cup of tea and the unhurried patience of a man who knew what was coming and didn’t need to rush toward it. Aren was beside him, book in his lap, frost on his collar, legs swinging because the bench was built for adults and his feet didn’t reach the ground.

"They’re close," Aren said without looking up. "The air changed."

Raven didn’t ask how a seven-year-old detected a delegation at two kilometers through atmospheric pressure. Aren’s senses had been doing things that defied explanation since the North, and asking only produced answers that raised more questions.

They came through the tree line at mid-morning. Eight figures on the northern path — six warriors flanking two who walked at the center. The warriors were enormous even by Northern standards, the smallest clearing seven feet, all of them carrying weapons that would have required two Southern soldiers to lift. Axes and hammers of ice-forged steel, worn the way other people wore coats — as natural extensions of the body beneath.

The War-King walked at the front. Hrothgar Stoneblood. Nine feet tall and seventy years old, and carrying both of those facts with the same indifference. The scar across his left cheek had faded since Raven had last seen him — three months of healing in a body that was slowly remembering what spiritual energy felt like. His ice-blue eyes found Seven Peaks above the tree line and stayed there, reading the mountain the way he read terrain — for advantage, for threat, for truth.

Beside him, smaller by three feet and moving with the careful gait of a woman whose body had been carrying weight for longer than it should have, walked Sigrid.

Bryn’s mother. The clan chief who’d said "Fix her or leave" and then "Spring" and then handed her daughter to a stranger and watched her walk south. She looked older than three months should have made her — but also straighter. The bend in her spine that Raven remembered from the longhouse had eased. Not gone. Eased. As if the ley-line restoration beneath her settlement had returned something to her along with the green shoots pushing through eight-hundred-year-old ice.

Bjorn stood. The movement was unhurried — a large man rising from a bench, setting down his tea, squaring his shoulders. Not attention. Not salute. Something older. The acknowledgment of one Northern body recognizing others.

Aren closed his book. Stood beside his father. The frost on his collar crystallized into sharper patterns — not nervousness. Formality. The ice dressing itself for company.

The delegation reached the gate. Six warriors. Two leaders. Eight Northern giants standing before a mountain that had built them a home, and a boy who was the smallest person any of them had seen since the last time they’d looked at him.

Hrothgar Stoneblood looked down at Aren. The distance between them — nine feet to four — was the kind of measurement that should have made the smaller figure insignificant. It didn’t.

"Frostborn," Hrothgar said. Voice felt in the stone beneath their feet.

"War-King," Aren said. Level. Clear. A seven-year-old who’d learned somewhere between the North and here that you didn’t fill silence with noise when silence was doing the work.

Hrothgar’s mouth moved. Not a smile — Raven had never seen the War-King smile. An acknowledgment. The Northern equivalent of a nod that meant you’ve grown without specifying in which direction.

"Welcome to Seven Peaks," Raven said.

Hrothgar’s ice-blue eyes found her. "Fire-girl. Still shorter than the stories."

"Still taller than the results."

The sound that came from his chest was either a cough or a laugh. With Hrothgar, the distinction was academic.

Sigrid hadn’t spoken. Her eyes were on the mountain — the architecture, the terraces, the living wood and formation-enhanced stone, and the distant shape of the Verdant Spire above the canopy. Reading it the way a mother reads the house where her child has been living. Looking for signs.

"The Northern quarter is ready," Bjorn said. To Sigrid. Not to Hrothgar. Because the hall was built for the people, and the people’s chief was the woman who’d sent her daughter south with a single word and come to see if the word had been enough.

The Northern quarter smelled like coal and stone and the faint, ever-present hum of the Singing Swords.

Bjorn led them through the western slope — the terraces, the approaches, the path that wound upward past the forge where the heat from the furnaces merged with the formation channels in the walls. The warriors spread out as they walked, the unconscious dispersal of trained bodies evaluating a space. They touched the walls. Tested doorframes with their shoulders. Looked up at the ceilings and breathed.

Hrothgar entered the first communal hall. Stood in the center. The ceiling was four feet higher than standard construction — the modification Bjorn had made on the second day, the change that Cedric Vane had made standard for the Northern frames. Twelve feet of clearance above a floor of western slope granite.

Hrothgar breathed. The full expansion of a chest that had spent seventy years in halls built for his body. His shoulders dropped a fraction of an inch. The tension that lived in a large man who spent his life ducking released, and for a moment, he was simply standing in a room that fit.

He didn’t comment. He didn’t need to. The breath was the comment.

Sigrid walked the halls more slowly. She touched the hearthstone — grey granite, warm from the coal formation channels beneath. Ran her fingers along the wall where the ice-forged steel framing met the stone. Looked at the sleeping chambers — eight of them, Northern proportions, beds that would hold a seven-foot body without the feet hanging over the edge.

"You built this before we agreed to come," she said.

"I built it because you’d need it when you did," Bjorn said.

"That’s either faith or presumption."

"In the North, those are the same word."

Sigrid looked at him. The one who’d fled south with a wife and a boy they’d wanted to sacrifice, and who had come back with a fire-girl who healed the Dead Zone and saved the chief’s daughter. And who had built, on a Southern mountain, a hall where the ceilings didn’t compress her people and the stone was warm, and the swords sang from the peak above.

"Show me the rest," she said.

They walked every room. The gathering hall. The kitchen with its oversized preparation surfaces. The storage rooms sized for Northern bulk goods — salted meat in quantities that assumed people who ate twice what Southerners ate. The training space with its reinforced floor, because Northern combat involved impacts that broke standard construction.

The warriors had stopped evaluating and started inhabiting. Two of them were already sitting on the hearthstone, legs stretched toward the warmth, weapons resting beside them on the stone. Not performing comfort. Finding it. The hall had been empty for weeks, waiting. Now it had Northerners in it, and the difference between a hall that was ready and a hall that was used was the difference Bjorn had been trying to explain to Cedric for months.

"It’s right," one of the warriors said. To nobody. To the room.

Sigrid asked to see the garden after the quarter tour.

Not the Spirit Garden. Not the agricultural terraces. Bryn’s garden. The patch between the residential quarter and the root-network hub where seven impossible species grew and a purple humming tree hummed, and a shoot was growing from a seed that had been sleeping for longer than the Northern Clans had existed.

Raven led her. Not Bjorn — this was a mother’s errand, and Bjorn understood the distinction without being told.

The path wound through the residential quarter. Sigrid walked through Sylvara’s living wood without comment, but her hand drifted to the wall once, and her fingers lingered. Warm. Breathing. Alive in a way that Northern stone was not and could never be. The environment that her daughter needed, and the North couldn’t provide.

They turned the corner to the garden, and Sigrid stopped.

Bryn was there. Of course, she was — she was always there. Kneeling beside the guardian’s shoot, which had reached two feet and was thickening daily, the bark developing the whorls and ridges that deepened every morning. Serenyx lay beside her in vigil. Solanthea at the garden wall, gold feathers catching the light.

Bryn looked up.

Three months ago, this girl had been dying. Eyes looking down. Silent. Translucent fingertips. Twenty-eight percent essence and dropping. A child pouring herself into broken ground because her body didn’t know how to stop.

The girl in the garden had green eyes that were bright and clear, and looking up. Soil on her hands. Soil on her knees. Color in her cheeks. She was taller — three months of proper nutrition, spiritual energy, and an environment that fed her affinity instead of starving it. Her hair had darkened from white-blonde to a deeper shade that caught the light with a warmth it had never held in the North.

She saw her mother and went still.

Not frozen — settled. The stillness of a child seeing something she’d been waiting for and wanting to do it right. She stood. Brushed the soil from her hands. And walked across the garden toward Sigrid.

Not running. Walking. Steady. Certain. The walk of a girl who had spent three months learning what it felt like to be well and was showing her mother with every step.

When Bryn finally pulled back, she took her mother’s hand.

"Come see," she said.

She led Sigrid to the shoot. Two feet tall. Pale green bark, whorled and ridged, dense with the kind of growth that belonged to something ancient compressed into something new. Serenyx lifted her head as they approached — amber eyes finding Sigrid, assessing, accepting. The Aeralith settled back into vigil. Approved.

"I’m growing something," Bryn said. "Something really old. It was sleeping under the mountain, and Sylvara brought it up, and I planted it."

Sigrid looked at the shoot. Then at Serenyx. Then, at the garden around them — the seven species that shouldn’t exist, the purple tree that hummed, the living soil that was richer than anything in the North because a child had been tending it for months with hands that made things grow.

"The cat," Sigrid said. "She hasn’t moved."

"She’s watching. She called the seed Mother. She says it’s the guardian of the forest." Bryn’s voice was matter-of-fact. The tone of a five-year-old delivering information that was, to her, simply the truth of the world she lived in. "It chose me. I don’t know why. But I’m going to take care of it."

Sigrid’s hand was still in Bryn’s. The chief’s fingers — rough, weathered, the hands of a woman who’d worked and led and grieved and waited — closed gently around her daughter’s small ones.

"You were dying," Sigrid said. Not accusation. Not grief. Statement. The plain, Northern acknowledgment of what was true. "Three months ago, you were dying, and now you’re growing something that a spirit creature calls Mother."

"Yes."

"You’re staying here."

Not a question. The decision she’d come to make had already been made by the evidence in front of her. A daughter with color in her cheeks and soil on her hands, and a garden that answered when she touched it.

"I want to stay," Bryn said. "But I want you to come visit. Bjorn built you a hall. The ceilings are right."

Sigrid made the sound again. The breath that was too full to be just air. She pulled Bryn close. Kissed the top of her head. Held her there, kneeling in a garden on a Southern mountain, surrounded by impossible things, holding the most impossible thing of all — a living child where a dying one had been.

"The ceilings are right," she said into Bryn’s hair. "Your Bjorn made sure of that."

The alliance was formalized that evening.

Not in the command center. Not with documents or seals or diplomatic language. In the Northern quarter’s communal hall, around the hearthstone, with the coal channels warming the granite and the Singing Swords humming through the western slope, and eight Northerners who’d spent the afternoon sitting in a room that fit.

Hrothgar spoke for the Clans. Raven spoke for Seven Peaks. The terms were what they’d discussed on the ridge three months ago — partnership, not tribute. Shared infrastructure. The Northern quarter permanent. Open access in both directions. Shamanic training as power returned. Ley-line restoration continued.

What made it real was not the words. It was Sigrid, sitting beside the hearthstone with Bryn in her lap, the girl asleep against her mother’s chest for the first time in three months. The chief, who’d said "Spring" was watching her daughter breathe in a room that was built for both of them.

"The door stays open," Raven said.

"The door stays open," Hrothgar confirmed. His voice moved through the stone floor. The hearthstone carried it.

Aren sat against the wall beside his father. Bjorn had an arm around him — unconscious, the way parents hold children when the holding is more important than the conversation. The frost on Aren’s collar had settled into a pattern that Elian would have recognized as roots.

Outside, spring held the mountain. Inside, the hearthstone was warm.

The alliance was a hall that fit, a child who was staying, and a door that went both ways. Everything else was detail.
