"That’s my assessment. The 8.3-second cycle matches the periodicity that Coop identified in the behavioral anomaly — the zero-misalignment unity that he classified as ’fabricated.’ The subjects’ behavioral presentation is perfectly consistent because they’re being timed. "A heartbeat."

Silas looked at her. The word she’d used was not the word he would have chosen. He would have said "synchronization mechanism" or "coordination signal" or "temporal alignment protocol." "So blocking it could free them, break them, or provoke the thing that’s controlling them."

"Yes."

"We don’t block it. Not yet. Not until we understand what the subjects are, what happens when the coordination fails, and whether the people they used to be are still in there."

Silas nodded. The formation master who dealt in systems and structures, accepting a decision based on the human variable that his systems couldn’t model.

"What does that mean for the Ashford Crossing subjects?"

"Their synchronization is weaker. The coordination is less precise. The behavioral fabrication is..." He chose the word carefully. "Thinner. The further from the Sanctum, the less perfectly the subjects maintain the unity. Which may explain why Coop’s lattice could detect the anomaly at Ashford Crossing — the fabrication is strong enough to pass casual observation but weak enough to fail under sustained Cognitect analysis."

"And it explains why a four-year-old could smell the difference."

Silas looked at her. The formation master who dealt in frequencies and harmonics and the mathematical architecture of spiritual energy, processing the idea that a child’s nose had detected something his instruments had taken ten days to isolate.

"Children’s olfactory sensitivity is typically higher than adults’," he said, because technical explanations were his natural response to things that made him uncomfortable. "So they’re not puppets."

Raven looked at the display. The Sanctum at the center. The organic growth surrounding it. The synchronization pulse radiating outward. The 29 dots beating in time. And inside the origin zone — 23,000 people who might still be people and might be something else entirely.

"We need to know," she said. "Not guess. Not project. Know. What happened to the 23,000 people inside the Sanctum."

"That requires intelligence from inside the perimeter. Which requires entering the organic growth zone. Which you have prohibited."

"I know what I prohibited."

"I am noting the contradiction."

"Note it."
