Marcus finished the fifth relay communicator at three in the morning, soldered the final formation crystal into its copper housing, and set it beside the other four on the workshop bench. Five identical boxes. Five ugly, imperfect, life-saving devices. Two more to build. Twelve days of work compressed into his hands and the dark circles under his eyes.

The relay pillars were easier — Silas had assigned two formation teams to carve them in shifts, man-height stone columns with crystal crowns that pulsed blue when activated. Fifteen of twenty-one completed. The remaining six would be finished by Day Ten.

Marcus stood, stretched muscles that had forgotten what rest felt like, and walked outside to watch the dawn touch the agricultural corridors. Corridor One’s grain had broken the surface three days ago. Thin green shoots pushing through dark soil, reaching for a sun they couldn’t know was about to change everything. Corridor Two’s root vegetables were slower — still underground, still building mass in the enriched propagation beds that Elder Fen’s techniques had made possible.

He went back inside and started on communicator six.

Thorne sat at the small desk in his quarters with a blank sheet of paper and a pen that felt heavier than Voidstrike.

This was different.

Thornfield: sixty percent complete. Water pump conversion finished, grain processing underway. Cold storage presenting challenges — the formation arrays needed for temperature maintenance were more complex than simple pump conversion. Silas dispatched a specialist.

Ashford Crossing: conversion begun. Smaller settlement, fewer critical systems. Estimated completion by Day Twelve.

Thorne logged the reports, updated the progress board, and went to run the evening security rotation. Professional to the bone. The letter in his drawer didn’t exist until the mission was over.

Jace sat cross-legged in the Residential Garden with a sheet of paper balanced on his knee, and the Moonveil Blossom on his shoulder tilted toward the page as if reading along.

He had no family to write to.

The Northern Clans’ dueling circuits didn’t produce families. They produced fighters — young men and women who learned the blade because the blade was all there was, who moved from tournament to tournament, earning enough to eat and sleep and keep moving. His parents were names he’d been told once and forgotten. His childhood was a series of training halls and borrowed bedrolls and the particular loneliness of being talented enough to survive but not connected enough to belong.

Until Seven Peaks. Until a sect that didn’t care about bloodlines or backgrounds or whether you had anyone to write home to.

He looked at the Moonveil Blossom. It looked back, in the way that flowers without eyes somehow managed to look.

Don’t be sad about it. I had a good run. Better than I deserved, probably. Got a home. Got a purpose. Got two swords that argue with each other and a flower that follows me around like I’m the sun.

Keep the garden alive. That’s the only thing I’d ask.

He folded the letter, tucked it beneath a stone at the base of the willow tree where the Moonveil colony had spread its roots, and went to the afternoon combat drill.

The flower on his shoulder nestled closer to his neck. Warm petals against skin. Saying something it didn’t have words for.

If she died, the information survived. Seven caches in seven locations across Seven Peaks and its satellite settlements, each keyed to open on a specific date or upon detection of her spiritual signature’s permanent cessation. The contacts in Coop’s distribution network would receive automatic notification. The evidence would flow whether she was alive to direct it or not.

She closed the cache. Activated the formation lock. Stood in the silence of her quarters and felt nothing in particular about the possibility of her own death.

Not bravery. Not fear. Just the professional clarity of someone who’d spent her life in intelligence work and understood that operations survived on redundancy, not on any single person’s continued existence.

She checked the lock twice. Left.

Survival guide: complete draft distributed to every settlement leader in Seven Peaks’ sphere of influence. Beast identification. Flora dangers. Emergency formation protocols. Written in plain language that farmers and merchants could understand.

Naida’s final intelligence update: all seven facility locations confirmed. Guard rotations mapped for a thirty-day cycle. Entry points identified — two per facility minimum, three where architecture permitted. Two facilities had increased security in the past week. Someone was nervous. But nervous wasn’t the same as warned. The increases were consistent with general paranoia, not specific threat awareness.

Refugee framework: three satellite settlement corridors surveyed. Basic housing frames seeded into living architecture. Capacity: nine thousand additional people when the frames matured. The wave’s energy surge would accelerate growth from weeks to days.

Everything was almost ready.

Raven stood at the head. Taron at her right. Thorne at her left. "Final intelligence review," Raven said.

Naida activated the display. Seven points of light appeared on a formation-generated map of Federation territory — three bright, four dim. Primary and secondary facilities.

"Team One." Raven touched the largest bright point. "Primary research facility. Largest site. Heaviest security. Forty to sixty research staff, thirty security personnel, and at least two cultivators, including the lead researcher. This is where the dimensional anchor research originated. Where the worst experiments happen." She paused. "I take this one."

"Team Two." Taron’s point glowed. "Secondary research site. Twenty research staff, twenty security. No confirmed cultivators, but assume at least one." She looked at Taron. "First independent command at this level. You’re ready."

Taron nodded. Stormheart hummed at his hip.

"Team Three." Thorne and Jace’s point. "Extraction and transport hub. This is where children are moved between facilities. Lower research staff, higher security — guards trained for prisoner transport. Thorne commands, Jace provides strike capability."

Thorne’s dark eyes were steady. Voidstrike silent at his side. Jace’s twin daggers were absent from his belt — already housed in his dantian, ready.

"Teams Four through Seven." Raven gestured to the four dim points. "Smaller sites. Three to five operatives each, led by Shadow Pavilion agents under Pei Suyin’s coordination. Splinter veterans on every team. These facilities have lighter security but the same extraction protocols. No scientist escapes with data. No research survives."

She looked around the table. Seven faces lit by formation-light. Seven people who understood what they were about to do and what it would cost if they failed.

"Order of operations: all sites hit simultaneously. Relay communicators for coordination between teams, but once you’re inside the null-field zones, you’re on your own until you come back out. Evidence first — recording crystals active from the moment you breach. Document everything. Then secure the children. Then destroy the facility."

"And if someone asks why?" Coop said. His cybernetic eyes caught the display light and held it, flickering once.

"We show them what was done to children in these places." Raven’s voice was level. "That’s the only justification we need."

Silence. The kind that meant assent.

"Three days. Final preparations. Rest where you can." She held each of their gazes in turn. "I’ll see you on the other side."

They filed out. Taron last, pausing at the door.

"We’ll be ready," he said.

"I know."

The door closed.

Raven didn’t write a letter.

She went to the residential quarter. Found Elian in his room, freshly bathed, damp hair sticking up in directions that defied the laws governing how hair should behave. Aren was already asleep in the adjacent bed, one hand dangling over the edge, a thin tracery of frost on his fingertips that melted slowly in the warm air.

"Will you read to me?" Elian asked.

She sat on the edge of his bed. He handed her the book — a children’s story about a fox who got lost in a forest and found its way home by following the stars. She’d read it to him four times already. He didn’t care. He liked the sound of her voice more than the words.

She read. He leaned against her arm. His golden eyes drifted closed somewhere around the fox’s encounter with the owl who spoke in riddles.

She finished the story anyway. Set the book on the nightstand. Tucked the blanket around him with hands that were steady because she made them steady.

Stood in his doorway for a long time.

Mei appeared in the corridor, silent as always. Sat cross-legged against the wall. Nodded once. I’ve got them.

Raven walked to her own quarters. Sat on the edge of her bed. Didn’t write a letter. Didn’t need to. Everything she’d say was sleeping in the next room with damp hair and golden eyes and the absolute trust of a child who believed his mother would come home.
