Suddenly, everyone remembered what they’d overlooked—Mara was only seventeen, well below the age of consent.

The murmurs started immediately.

"Seventeen?"

"Below the age of consent..."

"By the Light, the legal implications..."

"The International Children Protection Act—"

Kael’s face went white, then red with fury. But beneath the anger, something else flickered across his golden eyes—the sharp intelligence of someone trained in imperial law suddenly calculating the legal ramifications.

Sexual contact with a minor under twenty-one. The International Children Protection Act. Life imprisonment with hard labor.

His mind raced through the possibilities. Each one worse than the last.

If he admitted to sexual contact, he was confessing to a crime. A serious one. The kind that could destroy his position as imperial heir. Strip his titles. Ruin his clan’s standing.

But if he denied it, then what was he accusing her of? How could she have drugged him into something that never happened? The logic was ironclad. Inescapable.

Thalia leaned toward her sister again, voice barely a whisper. "What’s happening? I don’t understand—if Lord Kael was the victim, why is he the one in trouble?"

"The age laws," Katrin whispered back. "She’s seventeen. Under twenty-one. If he admits anything happened, he’s confessing to—" She broke off, face pale.

When Kael spoke again, his voice carried forced authority that couldn’t quite hide the defensive edge beneath. "If there are... consequences... from what you did to me, then I will do what honor demands. But I have demands of my own."

He was trying to take back control. Raven could see it in the set of his shoulders. The deliberate precision of his movements. The imperial heir reasserting his authority after being momentarily knocked off balance.

His golden eyes hardened as he ticked off each point with deliberate precision. "You will publicly admit to the drugging. You will return all paintings and jewelry designs to Amara. You will withdraw from the Centennial Art Festival. And you will—"

"Just let her get an abortion." Katrin Brenner’s voice rang out with casual callousness, cutting through Kael’s list like a knife through silk. "Problem solved."

The hall went silent again.

Several of the older family members looked horrified. Even those who didn’t understand celestial bloodline law recognized the profound ignorance in that statement.

Lady Isolde turned to stare at her granddaughter with an expression of pure horror. "Katrin, you fool—"

Kael turned to stare at Katrin with contempt that made the young woman shrink back. His entire demeanor shifted. The defensive uncertainty vanished, replaced by the cold authority of someone explaining fundamental cosmic law to an ignorant child.

"Are you completely ignorant of celestial bloodline law?"

His voice rose, filling the hall with authority that reminded everyone exactly who and what he was. Not just a young man. Not just nobility. Imperial blood. Celestial clan. Power that transcended mortal understanding.

"The moment a child carrying celestial clan blood is conceived, the guardian beast knows."

He let the words sink in. Let them understand the implications.

"Should that child die through violence or deliberate termination, the guardian beast will cry out across the spiritual realm."

The temperature in the room seemed to drop. Several family members made warding gestures—old superstitions rising to the surface. Even the servants along the walls had gone pale.

"Imperial enforcement will be informed instantly. It is strictly forbidden to kill an unborn celestial bloodline."

Kael’s golden eyes swept the assembled family, making sure they understood. Making sure they grasped exactly how serious this was.

"Until the age of blood maturity at twenty-one, those children are under the direct protection of forces beyond mortal comprehension. The penalty for such murder is not merely death—it is spiritual annihilation. The complete destruction of the soul across all planes of existence."

The silence that followed was heavy with fear.

Spiritual annihilation. Not just death. Not just execution. The complete erasure of everything you were, are, and could ever be. No afterlife. No reincarnation. Just... nothing.

Katrin had gone pale, trembling slightly. "I didn’t... I didn’t know..."

"Clearly." Kael’s tone was ice. "Which makes me question what else this family doesn’t understand about the forces they’re dealing with."

Lord Garrick stepped forward, trying to salvage the situation. "Your Highness, I’m certain my granddaughter didn’t understand the full implications—"

"That much is obvious." Kael’s voice remained cold. "But ignorance doesn’t absolve responsibility. If Mara is carrying my child—" He paused, jaw tightening at the admission. "If there are consequences from what she did to me, then that child will be protected by forces far beyond any mortal court."

Amara moved closer to Kael, placing a gentle hand on his arm. "Lord Kael, please don’t let her games distract you. She’s trying to turn this around, to make you the villain when she’s the one who—"

"Who what?" Raven interrupted softly. "Who drugged him from across a crowded room without ever approaching him? Who convinced him to follow her without ever speaking to him? Who forced him into sexual contact without ever touching him?"

She tilted her head, dark eyes moving between Kael and Amara. "I’m genuinely curious how I accomplished all of this. It sounds exhausting."

"You’re twisting things!" Amara’s voice rose with indignation. "You watched him all evening. Everyone saw—"

"Watching someone is not a crime," Raven replied calmly. "And it doesn’t explain the mechanics of what I’m being accused of. How did I drug him? When did I drug him? Where did I get the substances? Who helped me?"

The questions hung in the air.

Selene stepped forward, voice carrying that distinctive whisper. "My lord, please don’t let my daughter’s clever words deceive you. She has always been manipulative, always been—"

"No!" Selene pulled away from Edmund’s steadying hand, turning to face Lord Garrick with tears streaming down her pale face. "My lord, I have failed as a mother. Failed to instill proper values in my daughter. Failed to see the depths of her ambition and jealousy. I cannot—"

But before Selene could continue her theatrical display, the hall’s massive doors burst open with urgent force.

The butler rushed in, face pale with terror. His usual composure completely shattered. Behind him, they could hear the sound of heavy boots echoing through the corridors.

"My lord!" His voice cracked with panic. "The police! Imperial enforcement officers are here!"

The family hall fell into stunned silence.

Lord Garrick’s pale green eyes widened slightly—the first genuine surprise Raven had seen on his face all afternoon. "The police? Here?"

"They’re demanding to speak with Lord Kael, Lady Amara, and Lady Selene immediately!" The butler’s hands shook. "They say it’s urgent. They say it’s regarding a formal complaint filed last night. They have—" He swallowed hard. "They have arrest warrants."

Arrest warrants.

The words hit the assembled family like a thunderclap.

Amara’s face went white. Her amber eyes wide with shock. "Arrest warrants? But that’s impossible! We haven’t done anything!"

"Clearly someone disagrees," Raven said softly from her position across the hall.

All eyes turned to her.

Lord Garrick’s expression shifted from surprise to cold calculation. "You. You went to the police."

It wasn’t a question.

"I reported a crime," Raven replied calmly. "As is my right under imperial law. Attempted poisoning of a minor with intent to facilitate sexual assault. Quite serious charges, actually."

Lady Isolde rose from her chair, aristocratic authority reasserting itself. "This is absurd. You cannot seriously expect us to believe—"

"Believe what you like," Raven interrupted. "The police are here. They have warrants. I imagine they’ll explain everything."

The sound of boots grew louder. Multiple sets. Getting closer.

Edmund moved to stand beside his father. "We should call our lawyers—"

"Yes," Lord Garrick agreed, his mind already working through the political implications. "Get Marcus Chen on the communicator immediately. Tell him we need him at the Fourth District police station. And get someone from the Veylor firm as backup."

He turned to face the approaching officers, spine straightening with merchant prince authority. "We will cooperate fully, of course. The Brenner family has always respected the rule of law."

Victor leaned close to Edmund. "This is a disaster. If Amara and Selene are arrested, if any of this goes to trial..."

"I know," Edmund whispered back, face ashen. "The scandal alone could destroy us."

Kael stood frozen, golden eyes moving from the approaching officers to Raven to Amara. His mind racing through the implications.

If Raven had filed a police report last night, if she had evidence, if the police were taking this seriously enough to bring arrest warrants...

What exactly did she tell them? What proof did she provide?

And more importantly—what had actually happened in that hotel room?

Lieutenant Jarik Holt entered the family hall with the controlled precision of someone accustomed to violence and its aftermath. Behind him came Lieutenant Lyra Veyne and four additional officers in formal imperial enforcement uniforms.

Holt’s pale eyes swept the assembled family before settling on the three individuals named in the warrants. His scarred face showed no emotion, but there was something cold in his gaze. Something personal.

"Lord Kael Xuán. Lady Amara Brenner. Lady Selene Lin." His voice carried formal authority. "You are required to accompany us to the Fourth District Metropolitan Police Station for questioning regarding a formal complaint filed under Imperial statute 847-C."

Selene gasped. "Statute 847-C? But that’s—"

"Attempted poisoning of a minor with intent to facilitate sexual assault," Lieutenant Veyne finished crisply. Her steel-gray hair and immaculate uniform suggested someone who tolerated no deviation from procedure. "The complaint was filed by Miss Mara Brenner last night, accompanied by physical evidence currently undergoing forensic analysis."

Physical evidence.

Amara’s face had gone from white to ashen. Her amber eyes darted to her mother, then to Lord Garrick, searching for guidance. For a way out.

"This is ridiculous!" Selene’s voice rose to a dramatic pitch. "My daughter is lying! She’s making things up to deflect from her own crimes!"

"That will be determined through proper investigation," Holt replied calmly. "Which is why you’re being brought in for questioning. You have the right to legal counsel. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used in court proceedings."

He paused. "You are not under arrest at this time. However, failure to cooperate with this investigation will result in obstruction of justice charges."

Lord Garrick stepped forward, walking stick tapping against marble. "Officers, I’m certain this is all a misunderstanding. My family will cooperate fully. However, I must insist that our legal counsel be present for any questioning."

"That is your right," Veyne agreed. "However, the questioning will proceed whether counsel is present or not. If you wish to wait for legal representation, that is your choice. But it may be some time before they arrive at the station."

She glanced at her notes. "We’re also required to take a statement from Miss Mara Brenner as a follow-up to her initial complaint. Is she present?"

Raven stepped forward from the shadows. "I’m here."

Holt’s eyes flickered with something that might have been approval. "Miss Brenner. You filed the initial complaint. We’ll need you to come to the station as well to verify certain details and provide additional testimony."

"Of course," Raven replied calmly. "I’m happy to cooperate with the investigation."

Amara’s voice came out strangled. "She’s the one who should be arrested! She drugged Lord Kael! She forced him into—"

"That accusation will also be investigated," Veyne interrupted. "Which is why we need statements from all parties involved. Including Lord Kael."

Kael had been silent throughout the exchange, golden eyes moving between the officers and Raven. When he finally spoke, his voice was carefully controlled. "I am willing to provide a statement. However, I must insist that the Imperial Prosecutor’s office be notified. This involves a member of the Xuán clan, and proper protocol must be followed."

"Already done," Holt replied. "Commissioner Wu contacted the Imperial Prosecutor’s office this morning. They’re sending a representative to oversee the investigation."

Commissioner Wu. Kael’s jaw tightened. The Wu clan had been political rivals of the Xuán family for generations. Of course Wu would jump at the chance to oversee an investigation involving the imperial heir.

"Very well," Kael said stiffly. "I will provide my statement."

Holt nodded. "Then if you’ll all come with us. We have transport vehicles waiting outside."

As the officers began to escort the three accused parties toward the doors, the assembled Brenner family watched in stunned silence. This wasn’t how these things were supposed to go. Wealthy families didn’t get arrested. Police didn’t show up with warrants at merchant estates.

Money and influence were supposed to make problems disappear.

But these officers seemed utterly unmoved by the Brenner name, the opulent surroundings, or Lord Garrick’s merchant prince authority.

Lady Isolde stood from her chair, voice carrying aristocratic command. "This is an outrage. When our lawyers hear about this harassment—"

"Then I’m sure they’ll file appropriate complaints," Veyne replied without looking back. "In the meantime, these individuals are required to come with us."

As the group moved toward the exit, Raven fell into step behind them. She caught Kael’s eye as she passed.

He was staring at her with an expression she couldn’t quite read. Confusion. Doubt. Anger. Fear.

She moved past him toward the waiting officers.

Behind them, the Brenner family hall erupted into chaos. Relatives shouting questions. Lord Garrick barking orders about lawyers and damage control. Lady Isolde’s voice rising above the din with aristocratic fury.

But Raven didn’t look back.

She’d stood in this hall before. Faced this family before. Been broken by their schemes and their lies before.

Not this time.

This time, she walked out with her head high and her spine straight. Not as a victim. Not as someone to be pitied or punished.
