Coop leaned back. Let the lattice process.

"You’re doing it again," Craine said from the doorway.

"Doing what?"

"The thing where you sit in the dark and see things nobody else can see. It’s disconcerting."

"You reshape metal with your bare hands. We’re both disconcerting."

Craine entered. He moved with the careful economy of a man who’d lived with cybernetics for two decades and spent the last year learning that half of them were no longer doing what the Federation designed them to do. His left eye — the targeting system, the one that tracked movement with mechanical precision — caught the ambient light from Coop’s data display and reflected it back in shades that organic eyes couldn’t produce.

"Eighty." Craine turned the number over the way his students turned materials. "Eighty people who can do what I do."

"Eighty who can start what you do. The Forge Awakening is the first step. Blueprint Anchoring, Forge Core Manifestation — those take months. Years. You’re the only one at Forge Awakening level. You’ll be the only one for a while."

"I’m not jealous." Craine’s organic hand pressed flat against the table — the gesture Coop had learned to read as Craine processing something larger than the conversation. "I’m terrified."

Coop’s eyes flickered. The honesty registered as a deviation from Craine’s baseline — the man was relentlessly practical, emotions expressed through construction rather than confession.

"Of what?"

"When did you get wise?"

"I’ve been eighty-two years old for quite some time. Wisdom is the consolation prize for knees that don’t work properly."

"Your knees work fine."

"I said consolation prize, not inaccurate prize."

"The Federation wanted the perfect soldier."

"They got the perfect engineer. The irony is structural."

"It wasn’t wordplay."

The crystal responded.

"Forty percent?" Holt looked uncertain. "That’s not very good."

"You made it in sixty seconds from a rock you’d never seen before. Forty percent is a miracle."

Craine put his hand on Holt’s shoulder. The organic one. The gesture of a teacher who’d just watched a student cross the threshold from potential to practice.

"First Forge Awakening," he said. "Welcome to the path."

Medium lights: 152. The Tier 2 soldiers with latent pathways, indicators present but sleeping, needing months of foundation work and sustained exposure before the forge impulse would activate. The largest group. The patient work. The long investment.

Dim lights: 82. The Tier 3 soldiers with dormant potential — pathways that existed in the architecture of their cybernetics but showed no sign of activating. Not failures. Not impossibilities. Just... waiting. For time, or circumstance, or the catalyst that nobody could predict.

Three hundred and twelve lights. Not a squad. Not a company. Not even a battalion, in traditional military terms.

Something else.

Craine appeared beside him. The man moved quietly for someone with a spinal column reinforcement that weighed three kilograms.

"Maren Holt achieved Forge Awakening," Coop said.

"I know. I was there."

"First awakening from the 312. The first Technomancer on Ascara who isn’t you."

Craine looked at the constellation map. 312 lights in the gathering dark. His expression — always controlled, always calculated, the face of a man who’d spent twenty years behind a mask of Federation compliance — did something Coop had never seen it do.

It softened.

"I spent seven months being the only one," Craine said. "One path. One person. Building alone because there was nobody else who understood what the metal said when you touched it."

He reached out and touched the display. His organic hand passed through the holographic light — the Technomancer’s gesture, reaching for the intangible. The lights rippled around his fingers.

"I’m not alone anymore."

Coop, who had spent sixty years as a Federation soldier and just over a year as the first Cognitect on Ascara, who understood better than anyone alive what it meant to walk a path nobody else could see — Coop said nothing. Because some statements needed silence, the way some fires needed air.
