Naida’s map had too many lines on it.

The Shadow Pavilion office sat two levels below the Verdant Spire — windowless, three exits, the air kept cool by formation channels that Silas had threaded through the stone at her specific request. Naida worked better in the cold. Warm rooms made her want to sleep, and sleep was something she did when the map stopped producing questions.

The map hadn’t stopped in weeks.

It covered the eastern wall — a physical map, not formation-projected, because formation displays could be intercepted, and physical paper could be burned. Pins marked the crescent settlements: thirty-one cases, color-coded by confirmation status. Red for scanner-confirmed. Amber for lattice-flagged. Grey for suspected. Blue for the three at Ashford Crossing.

The new lines were green. Travel routes.

Six weeks of surveillance. Twelve agents deployed across seven crescent settlements, each one embedded as something ordinary — merchant, seasonal laborer, traveling healer, itinerant craftsman. Roles that let them watch without being watched. Naida had selected them for patience and peripheral vision, the ability to notice without looking.

They’d been tracking the confirmed and suspected fabricated men’s movements. Not their daily routines — those were documented, catalogued, unremarkable. Work, meals, sleep, community interaction. The performed normalcy of men who did everything correctly and nothing meaningfully. That data went to Coop for behavioral analysis.

What Naida wanted was the other movements. The ones that broke pattern.

She’d found them three weeks ago and had spent the time since making sure she wasn’t seeing what she wanted to see.

Coop arrived at the office at dawn. He ducked through the doorway — the ceiling clearance was generous by standard measure, but Coop moved through the world with the compressed caution of a man who’d spent sixty years in spaces not designed for his frame.

He stopped when he saw the map.

"You’ve been busy."

"Sit down."

He sat. The chair was solid stone — Naida didn’t keep comfortable furniture in the office because comfortable furniture encouraged visitors, and Naida didn’t encourage visitors. Coop didn’t comment. He’d been sitting on worse for longer than most people had been alive.

"The green lines," Naida said. "Every confirmed or suspected fabricated man in the crescent. Six weeks of tracked movement."

"I see them."

"What do you see?"

Coop’s cybernetic eyes flickered — the rapid-fire processing that happened behind the Federation hardware when his lattice engaged with a data set. He studied the map. The green lines radiated from settlement pins in every direction: work routes, market visits, social calls, the mundane geography of lives being lived. But threaded through the ordinary movement — visible only because Naida had drawn them in a darker shade of green — were other lines.

"East," Coop said.

"East."

Every confirmed fabricated man in every monitored settlement had made at least one trip east in the past six weeks. Not together. Not on any coordinated schedule. Not at regular intervals. The trips were spaced between fifteen and twenty-five days apart, and no two men traveled at the same time; the routes varied — different paths, different speeds, different departure times.

But the direction was invariant. East. Toward the Sanctum.

"How far do they go?" Coop asked.

"That’s the question." Naida pulled a second overlay from the shelf behind her — a translucent sheet that lay over the map, adding topographical detail and the organic growth perimeter. The growth circle sat around the Sanctum like a stain, 3.2 kilometers of pale biological expansion that was now closer to 3.5, given the acceleration Silas had measured.

The green lines converged. Not on the Sanctum — on the perimeter.

"The closest crescent settlement is forty-two kilometers from the growth edge. Two days’ walk on established paths, one if you’re fast and don’t sleep. The confirmed man there — a former mason, now on the settlement’s construction crew — left before dawn on the fourteenth of the third month. My agent followed at a distance. He walked east for eleven hours. Stopped at the growth perimeter. Stood there for approximately two hours. Walked back. Returned to his settlement the following evening."

"What did he do at the perimeter?"

"Stood. My agent was at six hundred meters — closer than I’d like, but the terrain offered no alternative. She couldn’t see his hands or face clearly. But she described the posture as..." Naida checked the report, though she’d read it enough times that the words were embossed on the inside of her eyelids. "Still. Not resting. Not observing. Still, the way a person is still when they’re concentrating on something internal."

"Contact," Coop said.

"That’s my assessment."

Coop leaned forward. His cybernetic eyes had stopped flickering — the lattice had finished processing and arrived at something it didn’t like. "Cell to cell. We hypothesized it. Physical proximity to the organic growth. Biological data transfer. No spiritual signature, no formation trace, no signal our scanners would detect."

"Not proximity." Naida pointed to the agent’s field sketch — a rough diagram of the perimeter section where the mason had stopped. "She noted that his boots were discolored when he walked back. Pale residue on the soles. Consistent with having stepped onto the growth surface."

"He touched it."

"He stood on it. For two hours."

The room was quiet. The formation channels hummed their cool, constant note. Somewhere above them, the mountain went about its morning — disciples training, children at lessons, the workcamp crews dispersing to satellite sites. None of them knowing about the lines on Naida’s wall.

"How many trips confirmed?" Coop asked.

"Eleven, across five settlements. The three at Ashford Crossing are the most difficult to track — two hundred kilometers to the growth perimeter means a round trip of four to five days. They use their agricultural duties as cover. Harlan leaves for the eastern field shelter, which is legitimate and expected. But my agent documented that on at least two occasions, he didn’t stop at the shelter. Continued east."

"Through territory that should be empty."

"Through territory that is empty. The eastern approach has been abandoned since the livestock draining incidents. Nobody goes there except my people and, apparently, his."

Coop sat with it. Naida let him — she’d had three weeks to sit with it herself, and the shape of it hadn’t gotten easier.

"Every eighteen to twenty-five days," he said slowly. "Variable intervals. No coordination between subjects. Different routes. If you tracked any single individual, you’d see a man taking an occasional trip east — plausible, unremarkable, especially for someone with agricultural or trade duties. You’d need to track all of them simultaneously to see the pattern."

"Which is why it took six weeks."

"And which is why they designed it this way. Variable intervals defeat periodic surveillance. Different routes defeat fixed observation points. Staggered trips prevent correlation. This isn’t improvised. This is a communication protocol designed to resist exactly the kind of monitoring we’re doing."

"Designed by something that understands intelligence methodology," Naida said.

The sentence sat between them like a stone on the map.

They brought it to the command center at midday.

Raven. Thorne. The privacy formations active, the progress board turned with the Sanctum number facing the room. The map came too — Naida had reproduced it on a smaller sheet, the green lines clear against the topographical detail.

She presented it the way she presented everything: facts first, analysis second, recommendation third. No editorializing. No emotional weight. The data spoke.

"Eleven confirmed trips to the organic growth perimeter across five crescent settlements," she said. "Variable intervals, fifteen to twenty-five days. Staggered timing. Different routes. Physical contact with the growth surface — agent documented residue on subject’s footwear consistent with organic growth material. Duration at the perimeter: ninety minutes to three hours."

"The return channel," Raven said.

"The return channel."

Thorne studied the map. His fingers traced the green lines — the convergence on the perimeter, the fan-shaped spread back to the settlements. "They’re reporting. Everything they’ve gathered between trips — infrastructure layouts, personnel patterns, defensive positions, scanner locations — gets transferred through physical contact."

"Biological data transfer," Coop said. "Cell to cell. The organism in the host makes physical contact with the parent organism. Information passes through tissue interface. No spiritual energy involved. No formation signature. No signal. Touch."

"And we can’t block it without revealing that we know," Raven said.

"Correct. If we prevent the trips, the return channel closes. The Sanctum stops receiving intelligence from the crescent. But it also knows that we’ve found the channel — because the data stops arriving."

"And it adapts."

"It always adapts."

Raven looked at the map. The green lines radiating east from thirty-one pins, converging on a circle of pale growth that was 3.5 kilometers wide and expanding.

"What we can do," Naida said, "is watch the contact points."

She’d been waiting for this part. The part where the problem became an asset.

"Every subject goes to the same section of the perimeter. Not the same spot — but the same general area. Each settlement’s subjects converge on a specific stretch of the growth edge." She pointed. Five sections of the perimeter, each marked with a small cluster of convergence lines. "These aren’t random. The subjects travel to specific reception points."

"Functional organs," Coop said. "The growth isn’t uniform. Parts of it are specialized. The reception points are structures designed to receive returning operatives."

"Which means they’re architecturally distinct from the rest of the perimeter. And that means they’re strategically significant." Naida met Raven’s eyes. "We can’t go near the growth. We can’t disrupt it. But we can map it from a distance. Every trip one of these men makes tells us where the growth’s functional structures are. Over time, we build a map of the organism’s anatomy."

"Using their own communication protocol against them," Thorne said.

"They built a system designed to resist surveillance. But any system that requires physical travel creates a pattern. The pattern reveals structure. The structure reveals vulnerability." Naida set down her hand. "The roads are the return channel. And every road goes both ways."

Raven was quiet for a long time. The progress board sat behind her — the nation’s metrics facing the wall, the Sanctum’s number facing the room. Twenty-three thousand. Still unknown. Still unanswered.

"Expand surveillance to all confirmed contact points," she said. "I want dedicated observation on every reception section of the perimeter. Minimum distance — six hundred meters, no closer. Document everything: timing, duration, posture, and any visible change in the growth surface during contact. If the growth responds differently at reception points than at other sections, I want to know how."

Thorne was already writing. "Standing orders for the perimeter agents?"

"Observe and document. No engagement. No disruption. If a subject notices surveillance, the agent withdraws. We lose one data point. We don’t lose the channel."

"And the subjects themselves?"

"Unchanged. They walk east. They walk back. They continue their lives in settlements where they control the water and the buildings and the food, and they continue being better at those jobs than the people they replaced." Raven’s voice was level. Controlled. The anger that lived underneath it was the kind that sharpened instead of burned. "We let them report. We let the Sanctum think its intelligence network is undetected. And while it builds its picture of us, we build our picture of it."

"The crescent settlements beyond our territory," Thorne said. "Twenty-eight cases we can’t directly monitor. If they’re making the same trips—"

"They are," Naida said. "The pattern wouldn’t function if only some operatives reported back. The protocol is systemic. Every fabricated man in every settlement, walking east on their own schedule, pouring data into the growth."

"Twenty-eight more sources of intelligence we can’t track."

"Not yet. But the perimeter contact points don’t care which operative arrives. They’re reception structures. If we map them from the subjects we can track, we map them for everyone." Naida allowed herself the faintest satisfaction. "Five reception points from five monitored settlements. If the distribution is consistent, there may be eight to twelve total around the growth perimeter. Each one a window into the organism’s structure."

"Timeline?"

"Continuous. Rotate agents on seven-day cycles. Nobody stays on perimeter observation longer than a week — the eastern territory does things to people’s sleep."

Naida nodded. She’d already built the rotation schedule. She’d built it three weeks ago, when the first trip was confirmed, because Naida didn’t bring problems to the command center without solutions in her back pocket.

"One more thing," Coop said.

Everyone looked at him.

"The interval. Fifteen to twenty-five days. That’s not just a security measure — it might be a biological one. The organism accumulates data over time and needs to offload periodically. Like a storage limit. If that’s the case, the interval tells us something about the organism’s information capacity. And the capacity tells us something about the organism’s complexity."

"How so?" Thorne asked.

"A simple organism — one that’s just reporting ’everything is fine’ or ’the scanner is at the east gate’ — could hold that for months. You don’t need to walk two hundred kilometers to say yes or no. But if the organism is recording sensory data, behavioral observations, structural assessments — complex, detailed, continuous surveillance — it fills up faster."

"The short intervals mean the organisms are collecting more data than we assumed," Raven said.

"The short intervals mean they’re collecting everything. Every conversation they overhear. Every formation they walk past. Every face they see. And every eighteen to twenty-five days, they walk east and pour it into the growth, and the Sanctum absorbs it all."

The room held the silence for a full ten seconds.

"So the question," Raven said, "isn’t just what they’re reporting. It’s what the Sanctum is building with thirty-one settlements’ worth of continuous surveillance data."

Nobody had an answer for that. The question was enough. The question would keep them awake for weeks.

The map would grow until the organic growth perimeter was segmented into functional zones: reception points here, inert sections there, the anatomy of something that wasn’t a city and wasn’t a creature and was both.

She filed the rotation schedule. Sent the encrypted orders to her perimeter agents. Checked the secure relay — Ashford Crossing’s embedded agent had filed her weekly report on Bess Cade, and the separate surveillance team had flagged Harlan’s next eastern departure as likely within four days.

Four days. Then he’d walk east through abandoned farmland, past the livestock-drained fields, through territory that hadn’t heard birdsong in months. He’d reach the growth perimeter, step onto the pale surface, stand still for two hours, and pour everything he’d collected into the organism that had eaten the man Lily Cade was waiting for.

Then he’d walk back. Put on his apron. Make dinner. Say the right words in the wrong voice.

And Naida’s agents would document every step.

She turned off the lamp. Left through the exit nobody knew about. The mountain was dark above her, the stars bright, the formation barriers humming their constant lie that everything inside was safe.

The roads went east. The roads always went east.
