The deep rock accepting the repair the way a broken bone accepted the set — reluctantly at first, then with the particular relief of something that had been wrong for so long it had forgotten what right felt like and was now remembering.

Spiritual energy flooded the junction. Four words. The drain has ceased. The hemorrhage of spiritual essence that had been consuming Bryn since the day she was born — the automatic, involuntary, cosmic function of a Pillar Soul trying to heal broken ground — had stopped. "Three months. At Seven Peaks, with Sylvara’s root-network supporting her nature affinity, it would be faster."

"At Seven Peaks, in a high-density spiritual energy environment with a living root-network that resonates with her nature affinity, I estimate recovery to 80% in six weeks. Full recovery — 100% essence with stabilized Pillar Soul function — in four to five months."

The difference. Three months here, where the environment was barren, and her nature had nothing to connect to. Six weeks at Seven Peaks, where everything grew, and the growing would feed what she was. The mathematics of affinity — the measurable, clinical difference between an environment that tolerated her and one that needed her.

Bryn’s eyes moved.

Not down. Not toward the nexus. The distant gaze that had been fixed on the broken ground beneath the settlement for weeks — the Pillar Soul’s awareness, locked onto the damage, unable to look away — shifted. The anchoring function, finding no further damage to address, released its hold on her perception for the first time since the drain began.

Her eyes came up. Focused on the room. On the stone walls. On the fire. On the woman kneeling beside her pallet with shaking hands and a face that was trying not to show how much the work had cost.

"Hello," Raven said.

Bryn looked at her. Five years old. White-blonde hair. Eyes that were pale green — not the ice-blue of Northern coloring but the green of new growth, the color that had been hidden beneath the drain and was now, with the drain ceased, visible for the first time. The green that had been there since birth, unseen, because the energy to express it had been consumed before it could reach her irises.

A child’s voice. Speaking.

The clan chief was in the doorway. The same position. The arms uncrossed for the first time since Raven had arrived — hanging at her sides, the posture of a woman whose guard had dropped because the thing she’d been guarding against had changed, and the new thing didn’t require armor.

"Warm," Bryn said again. Looking at her mother now. The green eyes — the eyes the chief had never seen because the color had been hidden — focused on the face in the doorway with the particular intensity of a child who had been looking at something else for a very long time and was now, finally, looking at the thing that mattered most.

"Yes," the chief said. "Warm."

Her voice broke on the word. The hard voice. The leader’s voice. The voice that had held through five years of watching and waiting and standing in doorways. It broke on warm. Because warm was what her daughter had said, and warm was what her daughter felt, and warm was the thing the north didn’t provide and Seven Peaks did.

The ridge overlooked the settlement from the north. Wind-scoured stone. The permafrost beneath their feet carrying the faint new pulse of restored ley-line flow — a warmth that hadn’t been there a week ago and would grow over the months to come. The proof beneath their boots of what Raven could do. The proof that made the next conversation possible.

Raven stood. The chief stood. Two women on a ridge in the frozen interior of a continent that was healing, discussing the future of a child who had just said her first word in three weeks.

"She can’t stay here," Raven said.

"You’re asking me to send my five-year-old daughter to a mountain 600 kilometers away."

"I’m asking you to give her the environment she needs to become what she is. And I’m offering something in return."

The chief waited. The wind pressed against them. The ridge exposed to everything, hiding nothing. Northern ground for a Northern conversation.

"Seven Peaks will build a Northern quarter," Raven said. "Not a guest house. Not temporary lodging. A permanent home. Built to Northern specifications — the scale, the materials, the architecture your people need. Heated by coal and formation both. Designed for bodies your size, not mine. A place at Seven Peaks that belongs to the Northern Clans."

The chief’s expression shifted. Not much — the Northern face didn’t shift much. But the shift was there: the recalculation of a leader hearing an offer that exceeded what she’d expected and needed time to evaluate the excess.

"Your people would have standing access. Warriors who want training in cultivation or formation work. Children who show spiritual potential — and there will be more, now that the ley lines are healing. Anyone who needs the Medicine Hall’s services. Your shamans, who could study the ley-line network with practitioners who understand the science behind what they’ve been sensing through oral tradition for centuries."

"A place for Northerners at Seven Peaks."

"A place that’s yours. Not a favor. Not a concession. Infrastructure for a partnership. Your people contribute what they’re best at — strength, deep-territory knowledge, the survival expertise that a thousand years on the frontier produces. My people contribute what they’re best at — healing, cultivation, formation technology, the infrastructure that makes all of it sustainable. Neither side giving charity. Both sides building something neither could build alone."

The chief looked at the settlement below. The thin smoke. The lean people. The quiet children. The community she’d held together through decades of decline, watching the population thin and the pregnancies fail, and the children grow smaller because the land was dying beneath their feet.

The land was healing now. The ley lines restored. The nexus functional. In months, the spiritual energy would return to levels the settlement hadn’t experienced since before the Cataclysm. The pregnancies might resume. The children might grow taller. The land might stop being the enemy of the people who lived on it.

But Bryn couldn’t wait for the land to heal completely. Bryn needed the south now. Bryn needed a place where things grew because Bryn was, at her fundamental level, the force that made things grow.

"The door stays open," Raven said. "You visit whenever you want. She visits here whenever she’s strong enough. This isn’t an exile. This isn’t a taking. This is a mother giving her daughter what the daughter needs, and the daughter knowing — every day, in a place built for her mother’s people — that she hasn’t been sent away. She’s been sent toward."

The wind carried the words. The ridge held them both. The settlement below — the longhouse where a girl with green eyes had said "warm" and meant everything — waited for the decision that its chief was making on the ridge above.

"I want to see it," the chief said. "Seven Peaks. Before I decide. I want to walk through it. I want to see where she’d sleep. Where she’d eat. What the tree looks like. I want to see the place where my daughter would grow up."

"Then come. Bring whoever you need. The northern quarter will be waiting when you arrive."

"It doesn’t exist yet."

"It will be by the time you get there. My people build fast."

The chief looked at Raven. The hard face. The leader’s face. And behind it — visible now, because the armor had cracked when Bryn said warm and the crack hadn’t fully closed — the mother’s face. The face that was making the hardest decision a parent could make and was making it correctly because correctly and easily weren’t the same thing and had never been.

"I’ll come," the chief said. "After the spring thaw. When the paths are passable. I’ll bring Bryn, and I’ll bring my people, and I’ll see your mountain."

"And then?"

"And then I’ll decide. On the mountain. With the tree. Where I can feel what my daughter would feel."

Raven nodded. The agreement that was also an acceptance — the chief needed to see Seven Peaks the way Raven had needed to see the dead zone at Iron Ridge. The proving that came from standing in the place and feeling it and deciding from the feeling rather than from the promise.

"Spring," Raven said. "I’ll have the quarter ready."

"Northern specifications."

"Northern specifications. The ceiling will be tall enough for your people. I promise."

The chief’s face did the thing. The Northern thing — the reorganization around the eyes, the shift in the jaw. Tormund’s had been subtle. The War-King’s had been tectonic. The chief’s was a mother’s: small, private, the expression that said this hurts, and it’s right, and both of those things are true.

"She said warm," the chief said. Not to Raven. To the wind. To the truth. To the word her daughter had spoken after three weeks of silence in a longhouse heated by coal in a settlement at the edge of the habitable world. "Her first word in three weeks, and it was warm. Not mama. Not hungry. Warm. She was telling me what she needs."

"Children do that. They tell you what they need. The hard part is hearing it."

"I heard it."

The ridge. The wind. The settlement below. The conversation that would take a daughter south and bring a people into alliance and build a quarter on a mountain and open a door that would never close.

The word that had meant I need time now meant I know the answer. The answer was spring. The answer was the mountain. The answer was a mother who heard her daughter say warm and understood that warmth was the thing the north couldn’t give and the south could, and a mother’s love was measured not by holding but by letting go toward the place where holding wasn’t necessary because the place itself held.

Bryn would go south. The door would stay open. The north would have a home at Seven Peaks.

And in a longhouse below the ridge, a girl with green eyes touched the fur beside her hand, and the fur remembered being alive and the world, for 3 seconds at a time, grew.
