He turned to Raven.

"Fire-girl." The voice that traveled through floors. "I came to see a mountain. I found a nation."

Raven met his gaze. Up. Significantly up. "Come back with your smiths. We’ll make them something worth carrying home."

"Aye." He looked at the gate — at the wood and stone and formation crystal that held it together. At the carvings, Sylvara had grown into the frame overnight, patterns that neither Northern nor Southern traditions had produced because they were new, because the building made things that hadn’t existed before it woke. "You keep the door open. I’ll keep the road clear."

Tormund and Grenn stood at the gate and watched their people leave. Frostbite rested against Tormund’s shoulder — the Northern carry, upright, blade outward. The assessment traveled through the hybrid relay that Resha’s bio-neural organisms and Silas’s formation crystals had built together: root and crystal, signal and sap, the dual-channel communication system that bridged two civilizations’ technologies.

Raven didn’t see the assessment. It wasn’t addressed to her — it was addressed to the tribal councils, to the uncommitted ninety-six, to the Confederate political infrastructure that made its decisions through consensus and observation. The observers had come to look. They’d looked. Now they reported.

What she saw was the aftermath: three more tribes sending word through the relay that they wanted to discuss participation terms. Not commitment — discussion. "Whose idea? Yours or Bjorn’s?"

"Bjorn builds because things need building. I build because things need existing." She looked at the Southern quarter from the Verdant Spire window — the living walls, the breathing canopy, the humidity that shimmered in the morning light. "The result is the same."

She attended lectures. She ate meals in the residential quarter dining hall and returned to her room each evening and slept with the lights off.

The merchant had established a small trade presence in the commercial quarter. His formation-enhanced household goods sold modestly — the self-sharpening blades were popular, the heating plates less so in a settlement where Sylvara’s living wood regulated temperature. He visited the market daily, chatted with other merchants, and expressed interest in long-term residency.

The scholar spent her days in the library. Her research notes, when Naida’s agent glanced at them during a routine security sweep, contained detailed observations on True Path cultivation methodology — accurate, well-organized, consistent with her stated academic purpose. She asked intelligent questions during orientation. She requested access to the formation theory section.

All three behaved exactly as their stated purposes predicted. All three continued to read green on the embedded scanner they walked through twice daily, entering and leaving the residential quarter. All three occupied rooms in Sylvara’s densest living wood, surrounded by architecture that had disrupted the corridor visitor’s parasite within minutes of close proximity.

Ten days. No disruption. No emergence. No behavioral anomaly.

"Coop’s lattice reads?" Raven asked.

"Inconclusive." Naida didn’t soften the word. "The merchant interview: normal cognitive patterns, appropriate emotional responses, consistent backstory. The healer’s medical assessment: Mira’s team found nothing anomalous in her spiritual signature or meridian mapping. The scholar’s library orientation: Coop sat across the table for forty-five minutes and came away with nothing definitive."

"Nothing definitive means he didn’t clear them."

"Correct. He described all three as —" Naida checked her notes. "’Within normal parameters but at the edge of them.’ The behavioral fidelity is either genuine or sophisticated enough to resist lattice-level scrutiny at casual contact depth."

"Can he go deeper?"

"Not without a pretext that would alert the subjects. The lattice reads best during sustained interaction with a reason to focus. A forty-five-minute orientation is the ceiling of natural contact. Beyond that, he’d need to manufacture a reason to spend hours with them, and any manufactured reason is a deviation from normal processing that a sophisticated operative would notice."

Raven set the report down. Ten days. Three green lights. Three people who might be exactly what they claimed, living in Sylvara’s wood, surrounded by a building that was now awake and aware and paying attention to everything inside it.

"Sylvara?" she asked.

"No reaction. The living wood registers their presence the same way it registers every resident — warmth, accommodation, the usual responsive growth. No stress response. No disruption. No change."

"Which means either they’re clean or whatever’s inside them is better adapted to living wood than the corridor visitor was."

"Yes."

The silence sat between them. Ten days of data that said nothing definitive, which was itself a kind of data — the kind that kept you awake at night because the absence of evidence was not the evidence of absence.

"Maintain surveillance," Raven said. "No changes. If Sylvara doesn’t react in another two weeks, we reassess."

Naida nodded. Left through the visible door.

Below that, the other ledger: a guardian growing in a garden because a five-year-old girl planted its seed beside a purple humming tree. An Aeralith mother keeping vigil. Three kittens rotating shifts. The mountain itself awake — Sylvara’s architecture inhabited by a consciousness that saw and decided and cared.
