Chapter 167: The Wormhole Enters a Contraction Period

Chapter 167

But seeing the expectant and trusting looks from Qin An and the others, Yun Han didn’t hesitate to call Ning Xuan.

Time was short. ’I have to give it a try, whether it works or not. If it really doesn’t, I’ll figure something else out.’

Ning Xuan was resting after finishing a treatment when she received Yun Han’s call. He explained that the Heavenly Might Corps was facing a crisis and asked for her permission to be temporarily reinstated. He promised he would return to her side as soon as the crisis was over. Ning Xuan glanced around at the hall full of wounded soldiers, then noted that Yun Han was clearly in an office. Without saying much more, she agreed.

However, she immediately sent Yun Han a message, reminding him that his life belonged to her and that he absolutely must protect it. She also told him to just ask if he needed any medicine.

Once reinstated as Commander, Yun Han immediately contacted the battlefield command center to inquire about the continuous combat duration for all support units. Seeing the inquiry was from Yun Han, the command center no longer dared to keep the Heavenly Might Corps pinned down on the battlefield. Three hours later, with an escort sent by Qiao Yu, the troops led by Qin Chuan and Yan Pengyuan finally returned to base aboard a Starship.

Qin Chuan was tall and powerfully built, like a small mountain in full armor. Now, however, his Battle Armor was in tatters. A deep gash stretched across his face from forehead to chin. The blood had clotted, but the wound was still a gruesome, horrifying sight, with black mist writhing around it. His eyes remained resolute, but they held an unconcealable trace of exhaustion and anxiety. The black mist swirled around his body, as if resonating with some power within him, casting his figure in an even more somber light.

Yan Pengyuan’s condition was no less grim. His right arm hung limply at his side, clearly useless. His face was ashen, his lips were chapped, and his forehead was beaded with cold sweat. Fortunately, there was no visible black mist around him, nor were there any abnormalities in his spiritual power fluctuations.

Both leading officers were wounded, but the condition of the soldiers behind them was even more tragic. The troops were exhausted, their Battle Armor and uniforms stained with blood. More frighteningly, most of them were shrouded in a faint layer of black mist—the kind that caused mental breakdowns and raised one’s Mutated Value.

Thankfully, Yun Han had brought plenty of medicine, and Qin An and the others were now experienced in dealing with the wounded.

The majority of the soldiers were contaminated with the black mist and had to be quarantined. The isolation zones on the training grounds had not yet been dismantled, so those afflicted were housed there. To help calm their nerves, the soldiers who had previously recovered after receiving the medicine acted as makeshift counselors, moving in and out of the quarantine zones to care for them.

At the same time, designated personnel triaged the wounded, dividing them into minor, severe, and critical cases. Critical patients naturally received priority treatment. However, in the process, they discovered that injecting the Alienation Value Clearing Potion into those already showing signs of alienation was useless. These individuals fully transformed within about half an hour. As before, the bodies of the dead were thrown into an incinerator to prevent contagion.

With Yun Han at the helm, Qin Chuan and the others were quickly and properly cared for. But on the front lines, various military units were still throwing themselves into battle one after another, trying to contain the invasive, black-mist-wielding creatures within a designated zone.

A wormhole crisis erupted simultaneously across three Star Domains. The creatures invading through the wormholes in all three Star Domain Battlefields carried the same black mist. When this news broke, the Military Department, led by Ying Yaoshi, received a call from the Elder Council. Several of its members urged the Military Department to dispatch troops and resolve the crisis as quickly as possible.

However, Ying Yaoshi was responsible for guarding the outer Star Domain Battlefield, a region of unstable space teeming with Exotic Beasts. They were already short on Combat Power and simply couldn’t spare any personnel.

After some deliberation, the Military Department and the Elder Council formulated several strategies. First, the various corps stationed on the inner battlefields would rotate to support the three major war zones, reinforcing their supply lines and medical aid. Second, the research division would go all-out to find a counter to the black mist and develop protective armor to shield the Spiritual Sea from its corrosive effects.

Finally, front-line troops were ordered to bolster their defenses, rely on ranged attacks as much as possible, and avoid direct contact with the black-mist creatures.

In the dark depths on the other side of the wormhole, countless black-mist creatures were coalescing, pouring through in a continuous stream.

The communicator in the battlefield command center suddenly crackled to life. The voice of a scout stationed near the wormhole came through: "Report! Our spatial warning system indicates the wormhole is shrinking—it’s entering a contraction phase! But the number of black-mist creatures coming through to our side is increasing dramatically!"

The air in the battlefield command center instantly froze. All eyes were fixed on the communicator. The commander reacted swiftly, snapping out orders, "Front-line units, immediately adjust your defensive formations! All ranged and heavy fire-support units, go to maximum readiness! How long does the research institute predict the contraction phase will last? Get me a forecast on its pattern, ASAP!"

The tactical analysis team sprang into action, screens flashing with real-time data from the front lines and distribution maps of the black-mist creatures. An analyst looked up. "Commander, based on the current data, the creatures’ main breakthrough point is concentrated on the wormhole’s northwest flank. Our ranged fire-support units are already deployed there, but their numbers are still climbing. I recommend deploying air support and additional heavy fire-support units."

"What other troops do we have for support? Front-line supplies are also critically low. Has the research institute come up with anything yet?" The command center’s commander had been up for days. His eyes were bloodshot, and he anxiously tore at his hair. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

Even just watching the surveillance feeds, it was obvious the battlefield had reached a fever pitch. Due to the threat of the black mist, soldiers didn’t dare use their Superpower Bodies or get close to the creatures, relying solely on ranged weaponry to take them down. Artillery fire boomed across the landscape, and fighter jets shrieked overhead. The roars of the black-mist creatures mixed with the thunder of explosions, creating a brutal symphony of war.

Watching the black-mist creatures rapidly expand their territory, with front-line casualties mounting and ammunition shipments falling behind, the commander was at his breaking point. Just then, a message arrived from the research institute. "According to our models, the wormhole will finish contracting and disappear completely in approximately two to six hours."

The news reignited the commander’s fighting spirit. He immediately selected over a dozen units on the command platform. All of them were troops that had seen battle and been pulled back from the front lines three days ago. Among them was the Heavenly Might Corps.
