Dual Worlds: I Have a Doomsday World

Jiang Zhenlong’s doubts hadn’t completely vanished. He looked Cheng Huai and his team’s equipment up and down.

His eyes flickered slightly before he sighed and said, "We’re the Modu Rescue Team, Hongshan Brigade, Squad 26."

Jiang Zhenlong stated his identity with his first words.

Cheng Huai, Liu Wei, and the others listened intently. This was the first time they had seen members of a rescue team since the apocalypse began, and the first time they had heard about the rescue team’s organizational structure.

Jiang Zhenlong continued his account. "Originally, we were conducting a search and rescue operation in Hongshan District. According to the plan, residential areas were the primary target, but during the operation, we happened to run into a survivor who had escaped from the commercial district."

"We received intel that dozens of female survivors had gathered here at the Golden Impression Club. Our squad was assigned to scout ahead and confirm if the information was true."

"But we ran into trouble. A group of survivors armed with a large number of compound bows has taken over the Golden Impression Club. They were extremely resistant to us entering. Based on experience, it’s highly likely that a serious crime has occurred inside."

"Our squad prepared to force our way in, but we didn’t expect that there was a hidden Awakened among them. Their Ability is probably something like Mind Control or hypnosis."

"One of our team members was controlled and turned to fire on his own people. Between that and the compound bows, we couldn’t force a breakthrough. We had to lay down covering fire and make a forced retreat."

"That group must have learned the location of our vehicle and the Hongshan Brigade’s base. They’re watching our vehicle’s location and the routes back on foot."

Listening to Jiang Zhenlong’s account, Cheng Huai and the others felt a sense of shared dread.

The minds of survivors outside the campus were far more complex than those of college students. During the search and rescue operations inside Mo University, they had never discovered any serious crimes.

But this might also be because the Mo University Camp was established so early. If it had been any later, no one could guarantee that the innocent, naive college students wouldn’t have turned dark.

Cheng Huai’s brow furrowed slightly. Liu Wei touched the Crimson Crystal Stone hanging from his neck and asked, "Captain, what should we do? The target has an Extraordinary. Can we handle them?"

Cheng Huai thought it over carefully before saying, "Based on this man’s description, their Extraordinary Ability isn’t too strong. According to our camp’s classification, it’s only at the initial Tier One level."

"Their control Ability can only affect one person. The only risk is that they’ve now obtained a firearm. Forcing our way in could be dangerous."

Cheng Huai had grown accustomed to his role as captain and always considered the safety of his team members during operations.

Listening from the side, Jiang Zhenlong quickly interjected, "How can we let you take on such a risk? If you’re willing to help, just escort us back to our base. Their actions are no longer just a serious crime; this is a terrorist attack!"

"The brigade has heavy weapons and snipers, too."

Jiang Zhenlong’s mindset seemed to still be stuck in the era of peace, where protecting civilians was the top priority.

"The rescue team must have set up a Survivor Camp, right? How far is it from here?" Cheng Huai asked.

Jiang Zhenlong glanced at the equipment of Cheng Huai’s team again, looking hesitant.

But in the end, he steeled himself and confessed, "We’re stationed at the Hongshan Railway Station. All the Dragon Country rescue teams are based at railway stations."

"That was the order from High Command before communications completely broke down. By relying on old-fashioned locomotives, the various levels of rescue teams can still maintain contact with headquarters."

’A railway station?’

’The choice of base is a bit unexpected, but it makes perfect sense on second thought. After the apocalypse, the transportation system collapsed, and clearing roads is difficult. The only thing they can still rely on is the railway.’

Jiang Zhenlong had been clever with his words. He was telling Cheng Huai that although the local rescue teams might lack firepower, as long as the railways were operational, High Command wouldn’t just stand by and watch the regions descend into chaos.

Reinforcements could definitely arrive.

After thinking for a moment, Cheng Huai said, "That’s too far. You must have wounded, right? Why don’t you come back with us to the Mo University Survivor Camp first? You can get your wounded treated there. We have survivors from the Mo University Medical College."

Cheng Huai’s gaze shifted to the space behind Jiang Zhenlong.

’So far, I’ve only seen Jiang Zhenlong, not the other squad members he mentioned. Where are the other team members?’

The answer wasn’t hard to guess. There were probably wounded members in the room Jiang Zhenlong was blocking with his body.

Jiang Zhenlong’s body stiffened for a moment, but then he nodded and stepped aside.

’If what Cheng Huai says is true, then heading to the Modu University Survivor Camp for now is indeed the best solution.’

Lin Qi, who was observing from the shadows, was quite satisfied with how Cheng Huai handled the situation. He was calm enough and had a good head on his shoulders.

’College students might be naive at times, but they’re definitely not idiots. They come through when it counts.’

After entering the room, Cheng Huai saw the two remaining team members, Yun Ming and Old Xu.

Old Xu was wounded at the top of his thigh, hit by a bullet. Fortunately, they had stopped the bleeding in time, and for now, he was just deathly pale.

"Liu Wei, stop fondling your ex-girlfriend. Carry the wounded man and head back to the university first."

Cheng Huai gave the order.

"No need, we can support him ourselves."

Jiang Zhenlong, Yun Ming, and Old Xu all quickly refused, subconsciously not wanting to trouble civilians.

Liu Wei, however, was quick to act. He stopped stroking the Crimson Crystal Stone on his chest, stepped forward, and easily lifted Old Xu into his arms in a princess carry.

"It’s fine. The Exoskeletons our camp produces can easily carry 440 pounds. You guys should save your Physical Strength."

Although Liu Wei wasn’t one of the mechanical engineering students in charge of production, after using the Exoskeleton for many days, he knew all its specs by heart.

"Exoskeletons? 440 pounds?"

The amount of information wasn’t large, but it was a bit beyond their comprehension.

The Dragon Country did have military-grade Exoskeletons, but their specs were nowhere near this outrageous. And from the looks of it, they didn’t appear as futuristic as the ones these university students were equipped with.

Cheng Huai took the lead, and the others followed behind.

The minds of Jiang Zhenlong and Yun Ming were still buzzing.

As they walked, Cheng Huai began to give them an overview of the Mo University Survivor Camp.

"Our Mo University Camp has about four hundred people right now, with survivors from almost every major."

"We’ve created a simple division of labor based on professional skills. The mechanical engineering students design and produce Exoskeletons and weapons. The students and teachers from the medical college form the health department. For now, the liberal arts and physical education majors can only handle fieldwork, like gathering supplies and rescuing more survivors."

"Right now, the camp’s construction is mostly complete, and we’re also installing a surveillance system that covers all of Mo University."

"In terms of equipment, we’re basically at full capacity with our Electromagnetic Kinetic Energy Weapons. Since the ammunition is recyclable, we have plenty of it, too. Right now, the mechanical engineering department is preparing to replicate the medium-to-large-scale Mecha that Lord Lin built from scratch..."

The journey wasn’t long, but the things Cheng Huai said along the way made the three men’s heads spin.

’Why does it feel like the weapons and equipment of these Modu University students are even more advanced than the rescue team’s?’

"Oh, right. Besides that, I heard that a senior, Wang Ziru, also established a special team composed entirely of Extraordinaries—the Awakened you just mentioned. There aren’t many of them, only five, but I hear they’re incredibly powerful in a fight."
