SONIA’S POV
I woke up with a sneeze. My body jerked suddenly, and quivered from the force of it. The sound echoed in the quiet room, sharp and unexpected. My eyes popped open, and they were filled with sunlight. Warm golden rays poured through the window, dancing across the wooden floor and warming my skin where they touched.
I felt brand new after the sneeze. My wolf, I thought, searching around for her inside me. She was right there.
She jumped to signal her presence, a small but clear spark of energy. I smiled softly because she was just so weak before, and now she was almost back to normal. The relief washed through me like cool water on a hot day.
My head rotated slowly as I tried to figure out where I was. The surroundings were strange and unfamiliar. The walls were painted a soft cream color, and there were simple wooden furniture pieces placed neatly around the space. A small vase with fresh flowers sat on the table, their petals bright and fragrant in the morning light.
As I scanned the room, I wondered how I had gotten here. My memories were blurry at first, like looking through fog. The last thing I remembered clearly was talking to Alpha Liam in Alpha Daisy’s room. The conversation had felt warm and honest, a rare moment of kindness.
"Alpha Liam?" My mind snapped the second I thought of him. Images, upon images of the past hours began to roll in full force. They came rushing back like a sudden storm—the fire, the dungeon, the cold water, the pain.
I remembered everything that happened. Most shocking was Beta Blane. He brought me here. Although that was the last thing I remembered clearly. The memory of his strong arms carrying me felt distant but real.
Strangely, it felt like Alpha Ramon had also been present at some point. I snickered loudly at that assumption. He was the reason I almost died in the first place. If he had come around, it was probably to finish off the job. The thought made my chest tighten with old fear.
My memory influx also came with remembering Ivy’s condition. Alpha Ramon made it clear he didn’t want me close to her. The image of her wrapped in bandages flashed in my mind, pale and still.
I knew in my heart I was the only one who could take care of her, and bring her back to life. It wasn’t because I was trying to brag. There just was this strong conviction I had in my heart, deep and certain like a quiet voice that wouldn’t be ignored.
I had to get to her by all means possible, even if it meant risking the never ending wrath of Alpha Ramon. The thought made my stomach flutter with nerves, but I pushed it down.
Carefully, I brought my feet to the ground. It felt wobbly as blood rushed to the tips. Pins and needles prickled across my soles. I waited the sensation out, breathing slowly until it finally faded. When it was gone, I fully rose to my feet. My legs still felt a little unsteady, but they held me.
There wasn’t much in the room, I noticed as I looked around. A simple bed with soft sheets, a wooden table near the window, a small closet in the corner, and that was it. But there was something warm and forgiving about it. The sunlight made everything feel less heavy, less like a prison.
Sometimes, rooms or spaces a patient is kept could aid in their healing. It was something I would have loved to mention to Alpha Ramon, if he would just hear me out. The space where Ivy resided was way too bleak and soulless, with its cold stone and dim light.
Snapping out of my wandering thoughts, I looked down to see I was clothed in a long free flowing dress. The fabric was light and soft against my skin, the color a gentle pale yellow that reminded me of summer mornings. It reminded me of those times Freya and I would escape to the gardens. Those were really good times. I wouldn’t trade them for anything.
They had provided precious memories. Although Freya turned out to be a mega disappointment, I could never forget what our bond meant to me at the time. The laughter, the secrets, the feeling of freedom for a few stolen hours.
A smile formed on my face, lifting my mood just a little. I didn’t mean to, but when I remembered the tune of the birds Freya taught me, I picked up the hem of my dress and began to twirl around the room. The fabric swirled lightly around my legs, cool and flowing.
As I did, I hummed it softly. If I were in a garden or the forest, the birds would have rallied around me. Now, I could hear their fluttering wings from a distance outside the window. Perhaps they were searching for the sound.
The smile on my face broadened as I twirled from one end of the room to the other, humming my heart out. My bare feet moved lightly on the warm wooden floor, each step feeling freer than the last.
I closed my eyes and allowed the sound of my voice to consume me. In that little moment I managed to carve out for myself, nothing else mattered. Not my father, my brothers, the death of my mother, and especially not the cruelty of Alpha Ramon. For those few seconds, I was just Sonia — humming, spinning, alive.
I was so deep in my world that I didn’t hear the door open. I didn’t hear any movement. But all of a sudden, I felt a change in the air. It was like another force had invaded the solitude the room provided. The warmth shifted, and a familiar presence filled the space.
I came to an abrupt stop, and my eyes shot open. My gaze dropped directly to the man staring at me at the door. It was Beta Blane. He stood tall and still, watching me with quiet eyes.
Reflexively, I wrapped a hand around my body for protection. The dress felt thinner suddenly under his gaze. He had saved me from the hands of body invaders, but what if he was one himself? After all, the alpha had given him access to my body before. The memory made my skin crawl.
"I didn’t know you could sing like that," he finally said, filling the silence. His voice was calm, almost gentle.
I cleared my throat. "I was only humming," I explained lamely. My cheeks felt warm with embarrassment.
He smiled, and nodded his head. "I’m glad my idea worked. You look fine. I’m sure it also has something to do with you. There’s just something very peculiar about you, and I’m yet to figure it out."
I ignored what he had said, because he wasn’t the first to say it. Everyone thought I was strange in a way. It didn’t matter, as long as the strangeness produced good. I had heard it too many times to let it bother me now.
"Thank you for saving me," I bowed my head slightly. "Is there a way I could maybe repay you for your kindness?" My voice was soft, sincere.
He chuckled. "Do you want to give up your life in my stead? I’m sure the alpha wouldn’t mind that happening."
I knew he was joking because he followed up his words with laughter, yet the mention of Alpha Ramon was enough to wipe the glint off my eyes. The name alone made my stomach tighten.
"I didn’t mean to get you in trouble. I’m so sorry." My fingers twisted the hem of my dress nervously.
"Wait, I never said you needed to apologise. Let’s just say I was doing a good thing because I was in a good mood. As for Alpha Ramon, he’ll come around."
He turned around to leave, but I quickly stopped him with my request. "Can I beg a favour, or would it be too much?"
He stopped on his tracks and turned around. "What do you want, Sonia?"
"Ivy. I want to see Ivy. I want to heal her. Please help me heal her." My voice trembled with urgency. The need to reach her felt like fire in my veins.
An expression passed through his face. If I didn’t know better, I would have sworn it was that of desire. But why would it be? The thought made me shift uncomfortably.
"It’s going to be difficult to do. I’ve already crossed the alpha one too many times."
"Please," I pressed desperately. My hands clasped together in front of me. "If I don’t see her soon, she’ll die." The words felt heavy on my tongue, but true.
