SONIA’S POV
Once he kissed me, I forgot all he had just said. The only thing that mattered were his lips moving on mine in a motion that made me desire for more. His mouth was warm and demanding, tasting like the river and something deeper, something that made my whole body come alive. I melted into him, my fingers pressing against his bare chest, feeling the strong beat of his heart under my palm.
"I’ve taught you the first art of pleasure," he whispered, biting my lower lip gently. The sharp little sting sent sparks straight down between my legs. "Do you still want to run?"
My wolf jumped in excitement, pushing hard against my ribs like she wanted to break free. "Yes!"
"Let’s—"
"Alpha Ramon! The pack’s barn is on fire!" Blane’s voice cracked through our privacy, loud and urgent. We both turned our heads toward the direction of the sound at the same time. The peaceful moment shattered like glass.
In a swift motion, Ramon was up on his feet. His body moved with powerful grace even in the rush. "Cover up, and go to your house!" He commanded, his voice deep and firm.
"What? No. I have to help," I said, rushing to my feet. My legs still felt shaky from everything we had just done.
"Absolutely not! Do as I say, Sonia. This is not a request. It is a command."
I found myself nodding my head. Something in his tone left no room for argument. The distant crackle of fire and shouts were already filling the air.
He picked up my clothes and threw them toward me. I caught them quickly, the fabric still warm from where we had been lying.
"Go now!" He said after I had worn them. His eyes were already scanning the distance, focused and alert.
As I looked up, I thought I’d see Blane, but he hadn’t come to the spot where we were. Perhaps he was giving his alpha some privacy. I scoffed internally at that thought. He had seen my body already with his alpha’s approval. Him not coming into the spot had nothing to do with respect for me.
"Hey, Sonia!" He snapped a finger, and I blinked out of my head. "Go!" He shooed me away like a little child.
I really would have loved to help, even though I didn’t know the first thing about farming or saving a barn. The smell of smoke was already drifting on the wind, sharp and worrying.
"Be safe," I said, as I began on my way. My voice came out softer than I meant it to.
I had gone around in circles twice when it became clear I had lost my way. The trees all started to look the same, and the paths twisted in ways I didn’t remember. I thought it would be easier to find my way around because this was my second time being in this environment.
Turned out I wasn’t as location savvy as I thought. Frustration built in my chest with every wrong turn.
At this point, I was tired of walking around. In my tiredness I dropped at the edge of a tree and folded my hands in defeat. The bark felt rough against my back, and my legs ached.
"Useless!" I muttered to myself. A sting of tears burned in my eyes.
I couldn’t even find something as easy as the routes to the place that sheltered me. Ramon was right. I was just a spoiled princess who couldn’t do anything no matter my intention. The thought made my throat tight.
A few seconds in with no hope of mustering the strength needed to get up and find my way, I burst into tears. Hot tears rolled down my cheeks, and my shoulders shook. This was my punishment for daring to embrace the pleasures Ramon gave me. I didn’t deserve it, and this was my punishment for selfishly craving more.
"No, don’t cry," I said to myself, and began to wipe off the moisture from my face. My hands came away wet.
There were probably a hundred wolves fighting to save the barn, yet here I was, pitying myself because I couldn’t find a path. The distant crackle of fire and shouts carried on the wind, making me feel even smaller.
I jumped to my feet and dusted my butt. All I needed was to rely on my wolf, and I’ll be out of here in no time. The determination felt strong in my chest.
Nodding my head confidently, I began to walk again. My head was expanding with triumphant joy at being able to find new paths after making a determined decision, when I casually strolled to the spot where the tree I had sat on stood.
I dropped to my knees and buried my head on the ground. The grass was cool against my forehead. There was this urge to scream. It had been building from when I was a child up until now.
The maids my father hired to replace my mother always said it wasn’t proper for a girl to scream. They said at all times, you must absolutely be proper. Their voices still echoed in my memory, strict and disapproving.
The first time I got this urge to scream, I silenced it because I didn’t want to be scolded. Second time, I took a cold bath. As the days progressed, and the urge grew, I found other distractions that kept me from giving in.
But alone now, with the sun setting and smoke thick in the air, yet I couldn’t find my way, I could care less about being prim and proper.
As soon as my lips touched the ground, I let out a scream. It tore out of me raw and loud, echoing through the trees. All the frustration, fear, and hidden pain poured out in that single cry.
When I straightened again, I had turned into my wolf. The shift happened fast, bones reshaping, fur sprouting in a warm rush. Things felt different this time around. I felt faster. My senses were much more sharp. The world came alive with new colors and scents. The smoke smelled sharper, the earth richer.
I didn’t feel like a lowly omega. I felt ferocious. Power surged through my limbs, making my muscles twitch with energy.
I ran past the bushes and the trees, into clearer paths. My paws hit the ground with strong, steady thuds. Leaves and twigs crunched beneath me. A particular way called stronger to me. I didn’t know why, I just knew I had to follow my wolf instincts.
Surrendering myself to her leadership, she took control. Not just physically, but also mentally. The world expanded from the narrow path, and more buildings began to show up.
I was at the main pack now, but she just kept running. The air grew thicker with smoke, burning my nose and making my eyes water. More and more people appeared around. Still, my wolf continued running. Shouts and the roar of flames filled the air.
She ran past the building I supposed was the barn. Flames licked high into the sky, orange and angry. My curiosity grew within her. I didn’t have any form of control over her, so I was curious to see where she was headed.
Diverting into a path I had never seen before, my curiosity surged. The heat grew stronger here, pressing against my fur like a living thing. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
"Where’s she going!" Another voice screamed behind me, but my wolf kept on going. Her determination was fierce.
It ran into a path where the fire was raging. The heat was intense now, waves of it rolling over me. From what I could see, this was where the fire that affected the barn started from. Burning wood cracked and popped loudly. Thick black smoke choked the air.
There were people all around. Not just people, but warriors in battle, shouting orders and throwing water. It happened so quickly. My wolf leaped into the air, powerful muscles coiling and releasing, and when it came down, it was in the thick of the fire. Flames danced dangerously close, singeing the edges of my fur.
"Sonia!" A voice screamed. It sounded far away, filled with panic.
I felt the burning sensation as she prodded through, in search of what I didn’t know. The heat bit at my paws and sides, but my wolf pushed forward.
"Let’s go!" I tried to regain control. To get her out as fast as possible. Fear gripped me tight.
She didn’t budge, until suddenly, her canines grabbed something. A small, struggling shape. She held on firmly and turned, ready to race back out.
