Lorena dragged Sonia’s lifeless body behind the house and dumped it unceremoniously in the shadows near the back wall. She smirked as she stared at the girl’s skin, which was already growing paler by the second, the life drained from her features.
"Rest in peace," she hissed, a satisfied gleam in her eyes, before turning and walking away without a second glance.
She had made it only a little distance from the house when she stumbled upon Blane. He stood tall and alert, his expression hardening the moment he saw her.
"Why are you here?" he asked, eyeing her suspiciously.
"I should be asking you the same question," Lorena shot back. "Last I checked, you have no business around these parts of the pack. Or has that changed? Are you on your way to see Sonia? What’s that smell?" She moved closer, leaning in to sniff his body, but he pushed her away firmly.
"I’m not surprised you know nothing about boundaries, seeing how much of it you actually lack. Step aside," he warned, moving to walk past her.
"You’re the one to talk about boundaries," she scoffed, brushing past him with a sharp glare.
Blane sighed and halted, watching her leave instead. She was a troublemaker, but he didn’t want to poke her right now. Ivy still wanted to keep things secret between them. Any wrong move toward the wrong person, and everything would spill into the open.
He waited until she was completely out of sight before he began walking again.
The Alpha had asked to be left alone after they returned with the horrible news. They hadn’t managed to get the head of Alpha Jack as promised. When Ramon got over the shock of the revelation, they would be punished for not fulfilling their end of the bargain. That was why Blane needed some sort of comfort before the punishment came down.
He made it into the general pack route without running into Lorena again. For that, he was grateful. The area was silent. A little too silent, maybe. Their culture was very different from other packs. In other packs, celebrations would already be in full swing. But here, the real celebration only happened at night.
Maybe because the full moon served as a painful remembrance of the bloody massacre by Alpha Ferins.
"A penny for your thoughts?" Daniel crept up behind him.
"Don’t do that," Blane replied.
"Do what? Creep behind you, or ask you a question?"
"Both," he answered monotonously.
"Someone’s grumpy. Ivy scolded you?"
Blane turned around swiftly and grabbed him by the neck.
"I know you love to fool around, but there’s nothing funny about being a gossip. I told you the Alpha must not know about this. If you let it slip, I’ll gouge your eyes out and feed them to you. Do you understand?" He growled, applying a little more pressure on his neck.
Daniel’s hand hit Blane’s arm in surrender, and he let go.
He began to cough, clearing the pain until his airways opened again.
"You’re so mean!" he said after catching his breath.
"Yeah, let’s see if you’re singing the same tune when Alpha Ramon decides on his punishment."
"Yeah, I thought about that all morning. I haven’t had a wink of sleep in two days. We’re in trouble, Blane."
"We are," he agreed.
"You more if you don’t rinse off. You smell like her," Daniel said, dashing forward before Blane could assault him again.
Blane chuckled as he watched him leave. Daniel could be very lousy, but there was no denying his ability to lighten the mood.
He lifted his arm and sniffed it. A slow smile spread across his face. He did smell like Ivy. A lot like her.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t walk around with her scent on him.
Doubling his steps, he went straight to his room. He hit the shower immediately and began washing her scent off his body. The hot water cascaded over his muscles, but memories of their earlier passion lingered, making it hard to focus.
A few minutes later, he stepped out of the shower and grabbed his towel. He dried off quickly and was about to walk to his closet when his eyes fell on someone standing with their back to him.
His survival instinct kicked in, and he moved to attack, when the figure turned around.
"Alpha Ramon?" He paused mid-motion.
Ramon gave him a once-over and shook his head.
"What did you think you were going to do?"
Blane cleared his throat and straightened up. "Me?" He touched his chest, wearing an innocent look. "I wasn’t going to do anything. Just surprised to see you, that’s all." He shrugged.
"Yeah, sure," Ramon nodded. "Anyway, I came to tell you that I thought long and hard about it. I think not killing Jack was a blessing in disguise. We have bigger fish to catch after all."
"The messenger you spoke about? Have you thought of what you’d do about it?"
"I did. It’s obvious Ferins wants me to be on edge. He wants me to look over my shoulder in anticipation, worried sick about him attacking my sister. I’d die first before I do that, and that’s why I’ve reached a conclusion."
"Hmmm, what conclusion?"
Blane kept a leveled eye on him. Whenever the Alpha came to find him personally, it only meant he needed him for something very important.
"I want you to serve as a bodyguard for Ivy."
Blane chuckled with amusement. "You do know she’s not going to like that, right?" he asked.
"I do. That’s why she’s not going to know. While Daniel is taking care of our new recruits, you’ll be keeping an eye on Ivy. That way, I can focus on my response to Ferins."
"And what’s that going to be? Your response to Ferins, I mean."
Alpha Ramon’s face lifted, a sinister glint popping into his eyes.
"His daughter, of course. I’ve been waiting for this day for the longest time. I think it’s time to make good use of Sonia."
Blane’s eyes began to narrow. "I don’t think I understand your point yet. What are you going to do, Alpha Ramon?"
Ramon walked up to him and tapped his shoulder gently.
"You’re a loyal friend, Blane, and I appreciate your efforts. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you my plans just yet."
"Are you going to hurt Sonia?" He couldn’t stop himself from asking.
"Hurt? Quite the contrary, my friend."
He laughed and turned around to leave. "See you at the ceremony," he said over his shoulder before disappearing into the halls.
