SONIA’S POV
I woke up to the smell of meat, and began to sniff like a hungry dog.
As I rose up, I realized I wasn’t at the cellar like I was supposed to be.
It took me a long time to finally remember where I was. Ivy had taken me to the servant quarters, instead of the cellar.
She had rationalized her decision by saying the alpha didn’t technically assign the cellar as my only sleeping location.
I had been too exhausted to argue with her thoughts, and just followed through with it.
The second the smell of that meat hit my nose, I was glad I made the decision to come with her.
"You’re awake." I heard her voice and lifted my head.
"I am." I smiled, as she walked into the room..
"How did you enjoy your night in a semi comfortable bed?" She asked.
I looked behind at the bed which was really low in comparison to what I was used to, but a great deal better than the ground I had to lay on.
"It was amazing. Thank you."
"Good. Come with me. Zara is making breakfast."
"Who is Zara?" I asked, making sure to dress the bed.
"You’ll see when you see her." She laughed.
I threw her a look from the corner of my eyes. "Should I be scared?"
"God, no! She’s great, you’ll see."
I nodded, and straightened up, satisfied with how I was able to arrange the bed.
"You know for the daughter of an alpha, you’re good with these petty chores," she said as we made our way out.
"I am? I thought I wasn’t really hiding my inexperience well. I used to sneak out to help the less privileged wolves in my pack. When it came to the things we had to use our hands for, I wasn’t much help. But, I am good at healing."
"You are? Did you learn?"
"Not really. It’s like a gift, I guess. If the body isn’t healing like it’s supposed to, or your wolf is simply too weak to help with the healing process, I step in. I also heal from poisons too."
"Wow! You’re awesome!" She widened her eyes, making me chuckle.
"It’s no big deal, really. I wish I could do more to help more people. There’s a great deal of suffering all around. If everyone could do the best they could, the world would be a better place."
"You can say that again."
We laughed, as we stepped into the corridors. The quarter was built in a way that all rooms were connected to each other by a corridor.
As we walked into the corridor, we stumbled on some of the other servants.
They simply refused to speak to me or draw closer to me. As we walked forward, they either threw their faces away, or leaned into the wall as if i were a disease they didn’t want to contact.
"I’m sorry," I said.
"For what?" She asked, the smile from before still etched on her face.
"Because of me, others are running away from you."
She laughed. "Do you think I care? The majority of them are hypocrites. They answer best to the ones with powers. I don’t care. I think you’re nice, so I’m nice to you." She shrugged.
"Wow, you’re really not afraid, are you?" I questioned, looking at her with admiration in my eyes.
"I only fear alpha Ramon. The rest, I respect due to hierarchy. But respect doesn’t entail treating others badly just to show how much of it you can offer. That’s hypocrisy."
I nodded, learning so much from Ivy. She was just as young as I was, yet so full of wisdom. I wondered what her story truly was, and how she managed to gain so much wisdom.
As we drew closer to the place I assumed we were headed to, the smell of cooked meat became stronger.
My wolf began to jump hungrily.
"You’re hungry, aren’t you?"
"I am," I confessed.
"Hold on a few more seconds. I’m certain Zara would like to give you some food."
We took a turn, and stumbled into the servants kitchen, like Ivy described it.
The first person I saw was an older woman kneading dough with her hands.
I wasn’t sure how I knew, but I just guessed that was Zara.
The servants in the kitchen were less hostile than the ones outside.
First of all, they didn’t look at me like I was a plague. I saw genuine intrigue in their eyes. As if they wanted to know me.
The woman lifted her head up, and smiled. "Ivy!" She paused when she turned and saw me.
Wiping off her hand on her apron, she drew closer to me. "You must be, Sonia," she said.
"I am, Zara."
She looked shaken, and so did Ivy beside me.
"How did you know she’s Zara?" Ivy questioned.
"You said when I saw her, I’d know. I just knew by looking at her."
"Well, come here child. Let me look at you.".
She grabbed my hands, and twirled me around.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, the alpha’s—"
"If you value your tongue, Zara, you won’t complete that statement," Lorena said, suddenly walking into the kitchen.
Every head around quickly bowed. Zara’s hands left mine, and I joined in bowing.
"I see you don’t have much to do, and that would explain galavanting around. Especially in the kitchen. Well, I’m about to change that," she said to me, then turned to Ivy.
"I hear you’re the new chaperone for the captive. You show her all around, serving as her bodyguard. Since you want to be a saint and savior so bad, I’ll help you fulfill your dreams. The land close to the training ground has been prepared. The both of you are to plant as many flowers as you can. When you’re done, you’ll be giving gold dust that would help the flowers grow before the venue for the upcoming festivities is decided. I want everything done today. Do you understand me?"
I didn’t understand, but as soon as I saw Ivy nod, I nodded right after her.
"We’ll do as you’ve said," Ivy said.
"And you?" She turned to me, her nose scrunching with disgust.
"I will do as you’ve said."
"Good, now hurry up and get going. You don’t want to waste any more time of your already wasted morning, do you?"
"Common Sonia, let’s go."
Ivy grabbed my hand, and turned me around.
"Wait!" Lorena suddenly said.
We stopped on our tracks, waiting for what she had to say now.She walked around, and stood in front of us.
"You look like you have a problem with me. Do you have a problem with me?" She asked Ivy. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
"I could never have a problem with you, my lady."
"Then smile, and kiss my feet."
All this while, I was disappointed at the thought of not eating anymore. But when she commanded Ivy to do that, my brain snapped to the present.
I felt Ivy let go of my hand and started to bow.
She touched the ground, and brought her lips to Lorena’s foot.
"See that? She knows she has to do all I say, else, there’ll be hell to pay. Remember that if you ever think of disobeying me."
She withdrew her foot harshly, turned around, and walked away.
As I watched her leave, my mental note appeared with her name on it. She was going to pay. By the moon goddess, she was.
