The second class arrived over five days.

Not eleven students from nine cities like the first class.

Twenty-three students from nineteen cities.

They came through the eastern gate and the northern gate and the western approach road and one of them — a woman named Brie from the coastal city three hundred kilometers west who Bex the Tide Walker had been in contact with for two weeks — arrived by boat on the river that ran through the lower guild district and walked up the bank to the clinic door with river mud on her boots and the specific expression of someone who had been traveling for a very long time and was not going to let mud stop them now.

Kael’s mother opened the door.

"You’re muddy," she said.

"Yes," Brie said.

"Come in," she said. "There’s tea."

Brie came in.

The second class was different from the first in ways that the first class hadn’t been positioned to be.

The first class had arrived in a school that was still figuring out what it was — Calla teaching Aldren’s curriculum in a half-finished building with eleven students and the specific energy of something beginning. The learning had been foundational. What you have is not wrong. What you have is. What was taken. What you carry back.

The second class arrived in a school that knew what it was.

The building was finished — the second floor complete, the eastern classroom with its ceiling now, the kitchen that Aldren’s drawings had specified serving the function he’d intended it to serve. Fourteen graduates deployed to fourteen cities. Seven more in the field from the accelerated program. The oversight board model replicating through the network. The Kingdom-Wide Inscription running in every connected node.

The second class arrived into a functioning school with a history and graduates and outcomes that the first class had been building without knowing what the outcomes would look like.

This changed what they needed.

Calla understood this before the second student arrived.

She had restructured the curriculum overnight after the first student’s intake — Prya, the seamstress from the lower guild district who had been under monitoring suppression for thirty-one years and who had been doing the work since the day the suppression was lifted and who had finally, seven weeks later, been able to leave Valdenmoor for the first time in decades to help establish the oversight board in a city two days south. Prya wasn’t a student — she had been faculty for three weeks. But she had come back for the second class’s opening session to say one specific thing.

She stood at the front of the room with twenty-three new students and fourteen returning graduates and the faculty that had grown from Calla alone to Calla and Pela and Tarris and Corr and Sable and three of the first graduates who had come back after establishing their home city’s oversight board with specific questions about what came next.

"The first class learned what they had and what was taken and what to carry back," Prya said. "The second class needs to learn something different." She paused. "The second class is coming into a world that’s already changing. The Kingdom Agreement is signed. The oversight boards are establishing. The liberation work is complete. The honest System curriculum is in every node." She paused. "You’re not coming in at the beginning. You’re coming in at the middle." She paused. "That requires different skills than beginning skills."

"What skills," said a student in the third row.

Prya looked at the student.

"Sustaining skills," she said. "Beginning is dramatic. The signal going out. The cases being freed. The agreement signed. The school opening." She paused. "Sustaining is less dramatic. Sustaining is showing up to the oversight board session after the excitement is gone and the institutional resistance has settled into something slower and harder to name than active opposition." She paused. "Sustaining is the clinic on the morning when the queue is longer than the capacity and someone has to make a decision about who waits and how." She paused. "Sustaining is the school when the first-generation students graduate and the second generation needs to be taught by people who are still learning themselves." She paused. "Sustaining is what makes beginnings worth having."

The room was quiet.

"The first class carried the beginning," Prya said. "The second class carries the middle." She paused. "The middle is longer. The middle is where most of the work actually happens." She looked at twenty-three students from nineteen cities. "That’s what you’re here to learn."

Kael sat in on the first session of the second class the way he’d sat in on the first session of the first class — at the back, not teaching, watching.

The second class was different in composition from the first.

The first class had been predominantly between-walkers — people with Class irregularities, blank multipliers, abilities the Church had flagged as threats. The signal had reached between-walkers first because the between-frequency was the most sensitive channel.

The second class had between-walkers too. But it also had — other people.

A Level 22 Carpenter from a coastal city who had no Class irregularity, no blank multiplier, no between-walker designation. He had felt the five-ability signal’s visibility component and had seen the monitoring mechanism in his city’s Awakening ceremony and had organized a public meeting in his neighborhood the following morning to share what he’d seen. The oversight board contact in his city had told him about the school. He had come.

A Level 15 Herbalist from the southern region who had been working with Maren’s clinic network for three weeks, establishing a practice in her city that treated people regardless of Level, and who had come to the school not because she needed to learn what she had but because she wanted to learn how to build what she’d started into something that would last after her.

A Level 8 student — younger than anyone in the first class, sixteen years old, one year from Awakening — whose name was simply Kel and who had arrived with a letter from the school’s first graduate in their city explaining that Kel had been asking questions about the System that the graduate couldn’t fully answer and had suggested the school could.

Kael looked at Kel.

Sixteen. One year from Awakening.

Coming to learn what the System actually was before the Church’s version of it was assigned to them.

He thought about the morning of his Awakening.

About his mother pressing three copper coins into a priest’s palm.

About what it would have meant to know, before that morning, what the System was and what the Church was doing with it.

About the specific different trajectory of a seventeen-year-old who walked into the Awakening ceremony knowing the honest System curriculum rather than learning it after the fact.

The Kingdom-Wide Inscription was doing that.

But the inscription was passive — present in the nodes, available to anyone who engaged with the System architecture.

Kel had come actively.

Had found the school and had come.

He thought about the second class’s purpose that Prya had described.

About sustaining.

About the middle being where most of the work actually happened.

The first class had learned what they had and what was taken.

The second class was learning to sustain what the first class had built.

But there was a third class coming.

He could feel it in the way the work ran — not the between-walkers finding the broadcast, not the suppressed cases being freed, not the institutional response being managed.

The people who came because they had heard and had come to learn.

Not because the System had given them something unusual.

Because they wanted to understand.

Because they wanted to help.

Kel was the first one.

There would be more.

Calla found him on the roof at sunset.

She stood beside him and looked at the Ashrow below — the Domain running its healing architecture through every street, the Kingdom-Wide Inscription in every node, the school next door finishing its first second-class session.

"The third mandate," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"The first was x1 multiplier advancement," she said. "The second was infrastructure training." She paused. "The third is ordinary people who want to understand and help." She paused. "Not unusual Class designations. Not blank multipliers. Not between-walkers. Ordinary people who felt the signal and came." She paused. "Kel is the first but not the last." She looked at the city. "The Kingdom-Wide Inscription is reaching ordinary people through the nodes. Some of them are going to want more than the inscription gives them. They’re going to want to understand it deeply enough to explain it to others. To build with it." She paused. "The school needs to be ready for them."

"What does ready look like," he said.

"Different curriculum," she said. "Not the between-walker curriculum. Not the infrastructure training program." She paused. "Something that starts from the honest System curriculum the inscription provides and goes deeper. Into the architecture. Into the history." She paused. "Into what Ora is writing." She met his eyes. "The origin. The divergence. The correction function." She paused. "People who understand the System well enough to maintain the honest architecture themselves. Not through an ability. Through knowledge."

He thought about Calder.

About eleven years in a tower building the knowledge that became the pre-System framework translation work that had become the curriculum foundation.

About the specific power of understanding a system deeply enough to work with it rather than just in it.

"Ora," he said.

"She’s already designing it," Calla said. "She asked me this morning if she could develop a third program track. She called it — " she paused. "She called it System Literacy. The ability to read the System’s honest architecture and identify when it’s not running honestly and know what to do about it. Without any special ability. Without a blank multiplier. Just understanding." She paused. "She said forty-one years in a pre-System containment facility gave her a very specific perspective on what happens when people don’t have that literacy." She paused. "She said she wants to teach it so that what happened to her can’t happen to people who have the understanding to recognize it coming."

Kael looked at the school.

At the second class in its first session.

At Kel in the third row asking questions the first graduates couldn’t fully answer.

At Ora in the kitchen with Calder building the curriculum that would make the System literate to anyone who wanted to learn.

At the Domain’s healing architecture running through the Ashrow.

At six weeks to the threshold.

At the work.

"Tell Ora yes," he said.

"I told her yes two hours ago," Calla said. "I wanted to tell you after."

He almost smiled.

"That’s right," he said.

She went back to the school.

He stood on the roof and watched the Ashrow settle into its evening.

His System pulsed.
