Daren was waiting at the bottom — bond thin but intact, smoke-grey eyes finding Kael the moment he appeared, the posture shifting from held-tension to something more settled.
Thresh pressed against his leg.
He stood for a moment with his hand on Thresh’s skull and let eleven percent Spirit stabilize and felt the Domain slowly expanding back as the suppression wards lost their anchor — the field was already degrading, the wards drawing power from the anchor network that no longer existed.
Twenty meters. Twenty-five. Back to thirty.
The bond to every minion in the tunnel strengthened like lights coming back on in a dark building — the Commander, the crawlers, the beetles, the wraiths, the wolf, all of them present and clear and accounted for.
He walked down the tunnel.
Sera was standing twenty meters from the staircase entrance, notebook open, stylus not moving for once. She looked at his face when he emerged.
He nodded.
She looked at the ceiling — at forty meters of foundation and a city above it — and something moved across her face that he looked away from, because it was private, because it was six months of grief and planning and cold revenge finally arriving at its conclusion, and that was hers.
He gave her thirty seconds.
Then she closed the notebook.
"Maren," she said. Steady.
"Above ground. Knows the plan. The System notification will have reached it." He looked at the tunnel leading back south. "We need to move before anyone starts investigating the anchor chambers."
"The Watch units at the junction — "
"The Commander left them tied but unharmed." He paused. "They’ll be found. We’ll be gone."
She fell into step beside him.
The Commander organized the formation without instruction — travel configuration, the same groupings as every other tunnel run tonight, the same geometric precision. Twenty-one minions moving south through pre-city passages beneath a city that was waking up to something it didn’t have a word for yet.
"The System’s notification," Sera said after a minute of walking. "Global. Everyone saw it."
"Yes."
"The Church will respond. The noble families. The guild leadership." She was thinking aloud, processing, the practical mind already past the emotion and into the next problem. "The Veil is gone but the institutions built around it don’t disappear overnight."
"No," he said.
"This was the beginning," she said. "Not the end."
"Yes."
She absorbed this. Walked in silence for another minute.
"Voss," she said.
"He was there."
A pause. "He stopped you?"
"He watched."
Another pause, longer. "Why?"
Kael thought about a man who had found the second Grand Inquisitor’s personal records and signed a warrant the same morning. About twenty-nine years of maintained authority and the particular weight of knowing what you’ve been maintaining.
"He’d known for six months," Kael said. "Since Aldren." He paused. "He mentioned your niece."
Sera’s stylus stopped moving.
"By name?" she said quietly.
"He said he knew her name." Kael looked at the tunnel ahead. "I told him to figure that out when he figures out the rest."
Silence.
"That’s not justice," Sera said.
"No," he agreed. "It’s not."
"But it’s something."
"It’s a start."
She wrote something in the notebook. He didn’t look at what.
They emerged from the tannery drain at four seventeen in the morning.
The city was quiet on the surface — the global notification had gone out at three forty-one, and three forty-one in the morning was not a time when most people were awake to receive it. The ones who had been awake — the insomniacs, the night workers, the noble family members with Level 50 ceilings who had been lying awake for years feeling the pressure of a cap they’d been told was natural — those people had seen it.
The city wouldn’t understand what it meant until dawn.
By then Kael intended to be home.
The streets were empty and cold and exactly as they had always been — the same cobblestones, the same closed shutters, the same Watch patrol routes that had nothing to do yet with what had happened under their feet tonight. A city that looked identical to what it had been six hours ago and was fundamentally different in a way that wouldn’t be visible until people woke up and checked their System displays and found that the ceiling they’d been pressing against had simply ceased to exist.
He walked through it with twenty-one minions in the bond space and Sera at his side and the Key of Depths in his coat pocket and eleven percent Spirit climbing slowly back toward normal.
The records annex was dark when they reached it.
Then the light moved in the ground floor window — a candle being carried — and the door opened before he’d raised his hand to knock.
His mother stood in the doorway.
She looked at him. Top to bottom. Checking for damage with the efficiency of thirty years of practice.
Then she looked past him at Sera.
Then at the space where Maren’s bond sat — the Lich was somewhere nearby, he could feel it, had probably been circling the annex since the global notification went out.
"Done?" his mother said.
"Done," he said.
She looked at him for a long moment — the layered expression, too many things at once, the face she made when she was feeling something that didn’t fit into a single word. Then she stepped back from the door.
"Come inside," she said. "I’ll make tea."
He walked through the door.
Behind him the city of Valdenmoor sat in its pre-dawn quiet, the System’s global notification settling into every sleeping mind like a stone dropped into still water, the rings of it spreading outward toward a morning that would be unlike any morning the city had experienced in a hundred and forty years.
The Veil was gone.
The ceiling had lifted.
And somewhere in the records annex of the lower guild district, a Level 46 Necromancer from a district that didn’t appear on official maps sat down at a table and drank his mother’s tea and let the cold anger that had been burning since the morning three copper coins were pressed into a priest’s palm finally, quietly, rest.
