The section on the children took Kel six days.
Not because it was long — it was the shortest section Kel had written. Because it required getting something exactly right, and getting something exactly right took the time it took regardless of length.
Kel brought it to the kitchen table.
No notebooks. The questions clear enough to carry now, the way they had been since the day Kel arrived without the notebooks.
He read it.
The section opened with Wen.
A child in the full presence will develop abilities the absence-era frameworks have no name for. This is not a problem to be managed. It is the second generation arriving. The first task with a child whose ability is expressing is the same as the first task with anyone reaching toward expression: confirm that what they feel is real.
A child who is told their ability is wrong, or strange, or a problem, learns to fear what they are. The fear becomes the obstacle the next generation has to overcome. The absence-era suppression worked exactly this way — teaching children their abilities were threats, building the fear that made the suppression possible.
A child who is told their ability is real, that there are others, that there is a path — that child develops without the fear. The framework before the fear is the prevention of the next generation’s wound.
This is the most important work in the expressive phase. Not the institutions. Not the curricula. The children. The framework reaching the children before the fear sets in.
To the practitioner who encounters a child with an expressing ability: you are not teaching the child what their ability is. The child knows what they feel better than you do. You are confirming that what they feel is real and that they are not alone and that there is a path. The confirmation is the work. The child does the rest.
A child told "you’re not broken, you’re early" carries that for the rest of their development. It becomes the foundation they build on.
The whole expressive phase, every institution and curriculum and framework, exists to make sure the children hear that sentence before they hear any other.
He set the section down.
His mother had been reading over his shoulder.
She was quiet for a long time.
"Kel wrote that," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She read the last line again.

"The fear was the original wound. The extraction pattern. The fear of not-enough." She paused. "The children hearing they’re real before they learn to be afraid." She paused. "That’s the prevention of the wound at the root." She paused. "Not healing the wound after it forms." She paused. "Preventing it before it can form." She paused. "In the children." She looked at him. "That’s what everything was for."
He looked at his mother.
At what Kel had written.
At the whole work in one sentence.
At the children hearing they’re real before they learn to be afraid.
He thought about himself.
About the boy in the Ashrow.
About the blank multiplier.
About the priest who didn’t know what to make of it.
About what he had been told the assignment meant.
About the fear that the Ashrow’s coal had kept from setting in — the warmth that made the district worth staying in, the specific quality that meant a child could grow up in the worst conditions and not learn that what they were was wrong.
The Ashrow as the coal.
The coal as the thing that kept the fear from setting in.
His own development in the difficult soil that nonetheless kept something honest enough that the blank multiplier could grow into the healing function rather than being crushed by the fear the suppression tried to build.
He had heard a version of the sentence.
Not in words.
In the coal.
In his mother’s choices. In his father feeling the warmth and staying. In the Ashrow being the kind of place it was despite everything.
He had grown up early without learning he was broken.
Because the coal kept the fear from setting in.
"I heard it," he said quietly.
His mother looked at him.
"The sentence," he said. "You’re not broken, you’re early. I heard it. Not in words. In the Ashrow. In the coal you kept. In the way we lived." He paused. "I grew up with the blank multiplier in a district that should have taught me I was wrong." He paused. "The Ashrow didn’t teach me that." He paused. "The coal kept the fear from setting in." He paused. "I heard the sentence before I heard the other one." He paused. "That’s why the blank became the healing function instead of being crushed by the fear." He paused. "The coal." He paused. "Your choices." He paused. "I heard it from you. Before I had words for any of it."
His mother was very still.
She looked at her hands.
At the cracked red hands.
At the thirty years.
At the three copper coins.
At the coal she had kept without knowing she was keeping it.
"I just raised you the way you raise a child," she said. Her voice careful. "I told you what you had wasn’t wrong." She paused. "When the priest gave us the blank and didn’t know what to say." She paused. "I told you the blank wasn’t wrong." She paused. "I didn’t know what it was." She paused. "I knew it wasn’t wrong." She paused. "I told you that." She paused. "Every day, in different ways." She paused. "That’s all I did." She paused. "That was the coal."
He looked at his mother.
At the woman who had told a child with a blank multiplier that what he had wasn’t wrong.
Without knowing what it was.
Knowing only that it wasn’t wrong.
At the coal.
At the sentence the whole work existed to make sure children heard.
At the first child who had heard it.

In the Ashrow.

"The section is right," he said. "Kel’s section."
"Yes," his mother said.
"Put it in the archive," he said.
He sent it to Sera.
