- Chapter 1: The Awakening Ceremony
Her name was Prya.
Hael came back at midnight with this information and the particular expression of someone who had spent an evening doing something that mattered and hadn’t found it comfortable and hadn’t expected to.
He sat at the kitchen table — the same table where Nara had sat at four in the morning watching her display, where Kael’s mother made tea for everyone who arrived at difficult hours, where the oversight board spread its documentation and the retroactive review accumulated its weight. The table had become the center of something without anyone deciding it should.
Kael’s mother set tea in front of Hael without being asked.
He wrapped his hands around the cup.
"Prya," he said. "Forty-eight years old. Level 19. Seamstress. Lower guild district her whole life." He looked at the table. "She’s been under monitoring suppression since she was nineteen because her Awakening produced a Class designation the Church flagged as potentially irregular. Not irregular enough to contain. Irregular enough to watch." A pause. "The Class designation was Weave Intuition. The Church’s files classified it as a low-threat anomaly potentially related to System architecture sensitivity." Another pause. "She’s been making clothing for twenty-nine years. She didn’t know."
The kitchen was quiet.
"What did she say?" Nara asked. She was still at the table — she’d been there since the range test, drinking tea and reading the Framework Memory’s accumulated data from the hundred-meter scan.
"She asked me to leave twice," Hael said. "The first time I thought she was frightened. The second time I understood she was angry." He paused. "I stayed. I showed her the Church’s file. Her file. Thirty-one years of monitoring logs." Another pause. "She read the whole thing. It took forty minutes." He looked at his hands. "Then she asked me what Weave Intuition actually was."
"What did you tell her?" Sera said.
"The truth," Hael said. "That I don’t know exactly. That the Church’s classification system has been wrong about a great many things. That the oversight board is reviewing every case including hers." He paused. "And I told her about the clinic. About Nara." He looked at Nara. "I told her there was someone who could read the System’s honest record of what her ability actually is."
Everyone looked at Nara.
She was already reaching.
Not the hundred-meter scan — a targeted reach, the Framework Memory extending specifically toward the node record she’d identified for Prya. The fifty-meter distance barely registering as effort now that the ability had had an evening to settle.
She read.
Quietly. Her face doing the layered thing that Kael was learning was her version of processing — the between-blue eyes tracking something in the System architecture that only she could see, the Framework Memory reading the honest record of thirty-one years of Prya’s System data while the Church’s file read low threat anomaly.
"Weave Intuition," Nara said. "The System’s record — not the Church’s classification, the actual node data." She paused. "The ability is real and it’s been developing for thirty-one years under monitoring suppression. The System has been recording its development the whole time." She looked at Kael. "It’s a between-walker designation."
"Prya is a between-walker," Kael said.
"The System’s record shows she’s been doing what between-walkers do without knowing what she was doing," Nara said. "The Weave — the ability to feel the System’s architecture and work with it intuitively. She’s been doing it through the cloth she makes." A pause. "The clothing she produces — the System nodes near her work space show a consistent stabilization pattern. Small scale. Unconscious. The architecture running slightly cleaner in the rooms where she works." She paused. "She’s been stabilizing System architecture through her craft for twenty-nine years without knowing it."
Hael was looking at his cup.
"I told her to come to the clinic tomorrow morning," he said. "To meet Nara." He paused. "She said she’d think about it."
"She’ll come," Kael’s mother said from the stove where she was doing something practical with the evening’s leftover soup.
Everyone looked at her.
"Thirty-one years of being watched," she said without turning around. "And then someone comes to her door at night to tell her the truth. She’s angry now. She’ll come tomorrow when the angry has had time to find its direction." She turned around. "People who have been lied to for thirty-one years don’t stay away from the truth once they know where it is. They just need a night to get there."
She served the soup.
Nobody argued.
Prya came at nine in the morning.
She was a small woman — not the between-walker height that Lira and Nara had, the specific physical build of a life spent at close work, careful hands with the needle-calluses of a seamstress. Level 19. The monitoring suppression visible in the System architecture around her as a slight dampening that the Domain was already pressing against, the five-kilometer Stabilization function running against the Church’s residual monitoring network wherever it touched.
She stood at the clinic door and looked at it.
At the building that had been closed for twelve years and had opened three weeks ago.
At the queue that had formed before nine in the morning — low-Level district residents, people the Church’s healers had turned away, people who had been waiting for a clinic that didn’t ask about Level before asking about the person.
She looked at the Domain’s grey light in the System architecture around her.
Then she walked in.
Nara met her on the ground floor.
Kael stayed in the kitchen. This was not his meeting — he understood that without being told. The specific encounter between a between-walker who had been contained for twenty-two years and a between-walker who had been monitored for thirty-one was not a meeting that needed a Level 60 World’s Warden’s presence. It needed two women in a room with tea and the System’s honest record.
He heard them talking for two hours.
Not the words — the clinic’s ground floor was occupied and the kitchen’s door was closed. But the quality of it, through the Domain and the Sovereign bonds and the between-awareness that had been developing since the Awakening. The specific quality of two people recognizing something in each other that they hadn’t known anyone else had.
At eleven Nara came to the kitchen.
"She’s going to stay for a full assessment," Nara said. "Maren wants to document the monitoring suppression’s effect on her advancement. Calder wants to look at the Weave Intuition in the pre-System framework context." She paused. "And she has questions. A lot of questions." Another pause. "She wants to know if there are others like her."
"Yes," Kael said. "Many."
"I told her that," Nara said. "She wants to meet them." She paused. "She said — " Nara stopped.
"What," he said. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
"She said thirty-one years of being watched in secret and now she wants to be found in public." Nara met his eyes. "She said if there are others who have been monitored like her she wants to know them. She doesn’t want to be the only one who knows anymore."
Kael thought about Lira at the Ashwater crossing.
Thirty-one years working alone because she didn’t know there was anyone else.
Prya — thirty-one years monitored because the Church didn’t want her to know what she was.
Different suppressions. Same isolation.
"The broadcast," he said.
Nara looked at the Domain.
"If the Framework Memory extends to the Domain’s full five kilometers," she said. "All the nodes in range. Every active suppression identified. Every between-walker the Church has been monitoring in Valdenmoor — " she paused. "How many do you think there are?"
He thought about forty-three gaps in one well node. Eleven active suppressions in a hundred-meter range. The arithmetic of institutional suppression applied to a city of three hundred thousand people over two hundred years.
"More than we expect," he said.
She nodded.
"Tomorrow," she said. "The five hundred meter test."
"Tomorrow," he agreed.
She went back to Prya.
His System pulsed.
[PRYA — WEAVE INTUITION — BETWEEN-WALKER — IDENTIFIED] [MONITORING SUPPRESSION — 31 YEARS — REMOVAL: PENDING OVERSIGHT BOARD] [NOTE: SHE HAS BEEN STABILIZING SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE THROUGH CLOTH FOR 29 YEARS.] [NOTE: THE CLOTHING SHE MADE IS IN HOMES ACROSS THE LOWER GUILD DISTRICT.] [NOTE: THE SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE IN THOSE HOMES HAS BEEN RUNNING CLEANER FOR YEARS.] [NOTE: SHE DID THE WORK WITHOUT KNOWING IT WAS WORK.] [NOTE: THAT IS THE MOST HONEST KIND.]
He read the last line twice.
That is the most honest kind.
He thought about his mother washing clothes in cold water for thirty years. About the specific maintenance that kept things running that nobody credited and everybody needed.
Seeds in difficult soil.
Growing toward whatever light was available.
The Domain held steady.
The work continues.
