The work in Drevenmoor took seven days.

Not because the root network was the most complex — it was deep, the wound’s long duration having produced crystallization beyond anything he’d encountered. But the gradient was the strongest he had felt. The between-space pulling toward this location with the accumulated pressure of however long the withdrawal had kept it from returning here.

He didn’t need to provide force.

He needed to stay present and let the gradient run.

Vael watched from the surface.

Not supervising — witnessing. The specific quality of someone who had been holding a space for an unquantifiable duration and was now watching the thing the holding had been for. The clear eyes tracking the work with the attention of someone who understood what was happening at a level that went beyond his own current understanding.

On the third day he came up for the midday rest and found Vael sitting with Oren.

They were talking.

Not the between-frequency transmission — words. The slow careful exchange of two people comparing frameworks that had been developed across very different timescales.

He sat nearby without interrupting.

Oren was describing the Cost Sense. The present-tense cost data. The aggregate sensation and what it had felt like at a hundred and twelve and what it felt like in Drevenmoor specifically.

"The cost here is different from the other territories," Oren said. "I described it as fundamental. The wound generating cost directly." They paused. "But sitting here for three days — it’s not the wound generating cost. It’s the people." They paused. "The people in this town have been carrying the absence for so long that the absence is in them. Not as suppression from outside. As the shape of how they live." They paused. "The cost isn’t the wound pressing on them. It’s the habit of living in the wound’s shape." They paused. "They’ve adapted to the absence. The adaptation costs them as much as the absence did."

Vael was quiet for a moment.

"Yes," they said. "That is the hardest thing to heal." They paused. "The wound you can address through the between-space work. The root nodes disrupted. The gradient running. The between-space returning." They paused. "The adaptation — the habit of the absence — that requires time and community and the school’s work and the oversight board’s work and everything else you’ve been building." They paused. "The between-space returning changes the architecture. The people still have to learn to live in the new architecture." They paused. "They’ve been living in the absence’s shape for generations." They paused. "New shapes take time to inhabit."

Oren looked at Vael.

"You’ve watched generations of people adapt to the absence," Oren said.

"Yes," Vael said.

"What does the adaptation look like from outside," Oren said. "From someone watching the whole duration."

Vael thought about it.

"Small," they said. "Each generation is slightly smaller than they would have been. Slightly less present in themselves. Slightly more careful about taking up space." They paused. "Not dramatically. The change from one generation to the next is barely visible." They paused. "Across many generations — the cumulative smallness is — significant." They paused. "The people in Drevenmoor today are not broken. They function. They build things and love people and do the ordinary work of living." They paused. "But they are less than they would have been without the absence. And they don’t know it because they have nothing to compare it to." They paused. "The return will show them the comparison." They paused. "That moment is — " they paused. "I have been waiting to see it."

The comparison.

The Ashrow after the Domain arrived.

The gutters running less grey.

Not because the gutters changed.

Because the people carrying the maintenance of them were less suppressed.

The work better because the workers were fuller.

Small changes.

Visible in aggregate.

Real.

He thought about Drevenmoor’s people.

About what their daily lives would look like when the between-space returned.

Not dramatic transformation.

Small.

Consistent.

Real.

"The correction workers in this territory," he said to Vael. "The between-space work will need to continue after I leave. The root network will need ongoing attention as the gradient runs and the architecture adjusts." He paused. "Are there people here who have the sensitivity for the work."

Vael looked at the town.

"Three," they said. "I’ve been watching them. The specific quality I’ve been watching for — the between-space sensitivity that develops in people who have been in close proximity to the wound for their whole lives." They paused. "The wound produces sensitivity in the people who live in it the way the mountain produces people who understand the mountain." They paused. "The three I’ve identified — they don’t know what they have. They’ve been doing the work intuitively the way all the correction workers began." They paused. "They need the methodology documentation and someone to show them the between-space access." They paused. "I can begin that when you leave." They looked at Kael. "I was not a healer. But I can teach what you’ve shown me these seven days." They paused. "I’ve been watching carefully."

Of course they had.

"The documentation," he said. "Dael’s unified gradient methodology. Nara can inscribe it through the node network into the local architecture — the Framework Inscription reaching the three people’s node range." He paused. "They’ll receive it as the teaching signal. The same mechanism as the kingdom’s Kingdom-Wide Inscription." He paused. "When they’re ready for direct instruction — Vael, you’ll be here."

"I’ll be here," Vael said. The specific weight of someone for whom being here was not a commitment but a description of what they simply were.

On the fourth day the first fragment expression happened in Drevenmoor.

A woman in the market square. Fen’s visibility running, the suppression mechanism visible around her for the first time — not the monitoring network type, the wound-type, the absence-shaped suppression that lived in the adaptation itself.

She stopped walking.

Put her hand against the market square’s central post.

Looked at the air around her with the expression of someone whose peripheral vision had just acquired a new register.

Not dramatic.

The comparison arriving.

The between-space returning fractionally to this location and the person in it feeling the difference between the absence and the not-absence for the first time.

Kael watched from across the square.

Vael watched beside him.

"There it is," Vael said quietly. "What I’ve been waiting to see."

The woman stood at the post for a long moment.

Then went back to her shopping.

But differently.

Fractionally.

The smallness incrementally less.

On the seventh day he completed the accessible root work in Drevenmoor.

Not all of it — the network extended beyond the town into the surrounding territory, requiring weeks of work that the correction workers Vael would train would continue. But the deep layer accessed, the gradient established, the door below Drevenmoor opening more fully than any door he had opened.

The strongest gradient.

The most complete return.

The place the between-space had left longest pulling the return most strongly.

He came up from the seventh session and found Vael waiting.

The ancient presence looking at him with the clear eyes.

"The door here," Kael said. "Wren’s thread to the other side — I want to establish it before I leave."

"Yes," Vael said. "I can feel the thread’s destination from here." They paused. "I have been feeling it for a long time." They paused. "The other side of the door." They paused. "Knowing it was there and not being able to reach it." They paused. "Holder, not healer." They paused. "I could not cross."

"When Wren threads to this origin point," he said. "The presence will flow through." He paused. "Not the return completed. But the connection established." He paused. "The between-space on the other side will know this wound specifically."

"It knows this wound," Vael said. "It left it." They paused. "It has been aware of it the whole time." They paused. "The awareness has been — insufficient." They paused. "The awareness without the connection." They paused. "The connection will change what the awareness can do." They paused. "I understand that now." They met his eyes. "You understand it better than I do. You’ve established the connection in other territories."

"Yes," he said.

"What does it feel like," they said. "When the thread is established."

He thought about Wren threading to the first permeable door in Venmoor.

About the presence flowing through.

About the acknowledgment from the other side.

"Like something that has been trying to reach through a wall suddenly having a door," he said.

Vael was quiet.

"Yes," they said. "I imagine so." They looked at the town. "I will feel it when it happens." They paused. "Wren threads from a distance."

"Yes," he said. "Through the network. When the healing here progresses to the threshold." He paused. "Three months. The pattern suggests." He paused. "Vael — you’ve been holding this wound. When the thread is established and the presence flows — what happens to you."

Vael looked at the question.

"I don’t know," they said. "I’ve never reached the end of the holding before." They paused. "I have held many wounds over a long time." They paused. "The holding ends when the healer arrives." They paused. "What comes after — I’ll find out." They paused. "That is perhaps appropriate." They paused. "I have been watching others find out what comes after for a long time." They paused. "It’s my turn."

He looked at them.

At the ancient presence.

At the clear eyes.

At the holder who had been waiting to find out what came after.

"The school," he said. "When you’re ready. When the holding ends and you know what comes after." He paused. "There are things you know that the curriculum needs." He paused. "What the withdrawal looked like. What holding a wound for the full duration produces as understanding." He paused. "Ora would want to talk to you for approximately seventeen years."

Vael almost smiled.

"Seventeen years is not very long," they said.

"No," he said. "For you it probably isn’t."
