The range test happened in the evening.
Maren insisted on being present — the physician’s instinct expressing itself as oversight rather than interference, the Lich positioned at the Domain’s edge where the Sovereign bond could monitor Nara’s Class activity without adding to the ambient System noise.
Calder brought his reference texts. Of course he did.
Sera brought her notebook. Of course she did.
They set up in the clearing behind the clinic — the same building that had been closed for twelve years and had been running for three weeks and had already seen a hundred and forty patients and was currently treating seventeen simultaneously on the ground floor while a Level 53 Death’s Chosen sat in the back clearing and prepared to find out how far she could reach into the System’s historical record.
"Baseline first," Kael said. "The node at the well this morning — three meters, comfortable access, no strain."
"Yes," Nara said. She was sitting cross-legged on the ground — not because the position was necessary but because the suppression had required absolute stillness for twenty-two years and some habits persisted even when the reason for them was gone. "The access felt like — reading a book that was already open. No resistance. Just information."
"Try ten meters," he said.
She reached.
He watched through the Domain — the Framework Memory extending outward, a different quality than his Death Sense, less about living and dying and more about the System’s own recordkeeping. The specific frequency of an ability that read architecture rather than the things moving through it.
The nearest clinic building node — ten meters — accessed cleanly.
[FRAMEWORK MEMORY — 10 METERS — CLEAR] [NODE: CLINIC BUILDING — LOWER GUILD DISTRICT] [HISTORICAL RECORD DEPTH: 12 YEARS — BUILDING AGE] [GAPS DETECTED: 0] [NOTE: THE CLINIC WAS CLOSED FOR 12 YEARS. THE NODES RECORDED ABSENCE.]
"Clean at ten," she said. "Interesting — the clinic’s nodes recorded the twelve years of closure. The absence is in the record as clearly as the presence."
"The System records what isn’t there as clearly as what is," Calder said, writing. "That’s consistent with the pre-System texts — the framework doesn’t distinguish between positive and negative data. Everything is record."
"Twenty meters," Kael said.
She reached further.
The street beyond the clinic. Three building nodes simultaneously.
[FRAMEWORK MEMORY — 20 METERS — CLEAR] [NODES: 3 — LOWER GUILD DISTRICT] [GAPS DETECTED: 17] [NOTE: SEVENTEEN SUPPRESSION GAPS ACROSS THREE BUILDINGS.] [NOTE: TWO OF THEM ARE ONGOING — ACTIVE SUPPRESSION.]
She opened her eyes.
"Two active suppressions," she said. "In the buildings across the street."
"Active," Maren said sharply. "Currently suppressed people."
"Yes." She looked at the direction. "Not cell-level suppression — lighter. The kind used for monitoring rather than containment." She paused. "The Church’s residual monitoring network. Voss rescinded my warrant but the infrastructure didn’t disappear overnight."
Kael looked at Hael.
Hael had come out of the clinic’s back door at some point during the test — drawn by the activity or the Sovereign bond’s ambient information or simply the instinct of a former Grand Inquisitor who noticed things that required noticing.
"The monitoring network," Kael said.
"Still operational in parts," Hael said. "Dismantling it is in the oversight board’s current work queue. It’s slower than the Veil destruction." He looked at Nara. "She can identify active suppressions."
"From twenty meters," Nara said. "So far."
"Keep going," Kael said.
She reached fifty meters.
The entire block. Twelve nodes. Forty-one gaps, three active.
One hundred meters. The surrounding four streets. Thirty-seven nodes.
[FRAMEWORK MEMORY — 100 METERS — MODERATE STRAIN] [NODES: 37] [HISTORICAL GAPS: 1,847] [ACTIVE SUPPRESSIONS: 11] [EXP GENERATED: 1,847,000] [NOTE: LEVEL UP APPROACHING]
Level up from a hundred-meter range test.
Sera’s stylus stopped.
"One point eight million experience from a hundred-meter range test," she said.
"The gaps generate experience," Nara said. Her voice slightly strained — the hundred-meter reach requiring effort but manageable. "Every documented suppression gap — the System credits the documentation. The Framework Memory gives names back and the System pays for the giving."
"At that rate," Calder said, calculating. "If your range extends to the Domain’s five kilometers — "
"Don’t," Maren said.
Everyone looked at the Lich.
"Don’t calculate it yet," Maren said. "Not tonight. The ability is three days old and she just came out of twenty-two years of suppression." It looked at Nara steadily. "Stop at a hundred meters tonight. Let it rest. The nodes will be there tomorrow."
Nara looked at Maren.
"Tomorrow I want to try five hundred meters," she said.
"Tomorrow," Maren said. "Tonight — stop."
She closed the Framework Memory.
The information settled — the 1,847 gaps documented, the eleven active suppressions identified, the experience credited. She looked at her display.
[LEVEL UP — NARA — LEVEL 55] [LEVEL UP — NARA — LEVEL 56]
Two levels from a hundred-meter range test.
"The active suppressions," Kael said to Hael. "Eleven within a hundred meters of the clinic."
"I’ll have a team address them by morning," Hael said. "The residual monitoring network — we’ve been working through it systematically. Eleven more is — " he paused. "Eleven more people who have been living under monitoring suppression in the lower guild district." Another pause. "Who knows how long."
"The Framework Memory does," Nara said.
Hael looked at her.
"The records go back two hundred years," she said. "Your retroactive review starts fifty years ago. I can read two hundred." She met his eyes. "If you want to know how long those eleven people have been monitored — I can tell you. Tonight. Right now. From here."
Hael was quiet for a moment.
"Yes," he said. "Please."
She reached again — not the full hundred meters, targeting specifically the eleven active suppression signatures she’d identified. Reading their individual node records. The specific history of each suppression.
The longest had been running for thirty-one years.
A woman in a building fifty meters north who had been under Church monitoring suppression since she was nineteen years old — not contained, not in a cell, simply monitored. Her Level advancement tracked. Her ability development logged. Her life documented in Church files that probably said low threat, continue monitoring while she went about thirty-one years of living without knowing.
"Thirty-one years," Nara said.
The clearing was very quiet.
"Her name is in the node record," Nara said. "Thirty-one years of System records. Her real name — not the Church’s file designation." She looked north. "She’s fifty meters away."
Kael looked at Hael.
Hael was already moving.
"I’ll go tonight," he said. "Now. Not tomorrow morning. Tonight."
He went.
Nara watched him go.
Then she looked at her display.
Level 56. Framework Memory Rank 1. Two days out of a suppression cell and two levels above where she’d been when the field came down.
"The five hundred meter test tomorrow," she said to Maren.
Maren looked at her for a long moment with the ancient physician’s eyes.
"Tomorrow," it said. "Yes."
Nara looked at the Domain — the five kilometers of clean honest System architecture, the Ashrow within it, every node in every building holding two hundred years of records that the Church had been counting on nobody ever being able to read.
She was going to read all of them.
Level by level. Node by node.
The work that had been waiting twenty-two years.
His System pulsed.
[NARA — LEVEL 56] [FRAMEWORK MEMORY — RANK 1 — DEVELOPING] [ACTIVE SUPPRESSIONS IDENTIFIED: 11] [HAEL — EN ROUTE — NORTH BUILDING] [WOMAN — 31 YEARS MONITORED — ABOUT TO LEARN SHE WAS WATCHED] [NOTE: THE SYSTEM KEPT HER RECORD HONEST EVEN WHEN THE CHURCH DIDN’T.] [NOTE: THAT IS WHAT THE SYSTEM WAS ALWAYS SUPPOSED TO DO.] [NOTE: IT IS DOING IT NOW.] [THE WORK CONTINUES.]
