She said it on a Thursday.

After dinner. Not during — after, when the table had been cleared and the ordinary evening settling was happening and the Domain was running through the walls and the between-space was present in the quality he had begun to feel as simply the quality of being in this building in this district.

He was at the table.

She was standing at the window.

She had been standing at the window for a while.

"Say it," he said.

She looked at him.

"The Domain," she said. "It’s still growing."

"Yes," he said. "Eighty meters more since Wednesday."

"At this rate," she said.

"Full city coverage by spring," he said. "The pattern confirms it."

She looked at the window.

"The people in the new coverage area," she said. "The intake queue has been longer this week."

"Yes," he said.

"Not sick people," she said. "People coming to find out what changed."

The people who had woken up with the morning different and had followed the difference to the clinic’s door because the clinic was where things that had changed were explained.

His mother had been handling them.

Listening.

Explaining when explanation was useful and simply being present when it wasn’t.

"The coal keeper function," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"I’ve been doing it for the intake queue," she said. "Receiving the people who feel the Domain for the first time." She paused. "Not correcting anything. Not providing anything they didn’t already have." She paused. "Being present with them while they feel the difference." She paused. "The between-space is already present in them when they walk through the door." She paused. "I’m just — receiving what’s already there."

He looked at her.

At what the coal keeper did when the between-space had returned and there was nothing left to maintain against the absence.

"That’s the work now," he said.

"Yes," she said. "I know." She paused. "I’ve known since the announcement." She paused. "I wanted to say it out loud." She paused. "The work changing character but not stopping." She paused. He thought about the Domain expanding.

About the people in the new streets waking up with the morning different.

About his mother at the intake desk.

About the reception.

"The school’s participatory curriculum," he said. "The quality of attention it teaches." He paused. "Receiving what is already there." He paused. "Being present without providing." He paused. "You’ve been teaching that from the intake desk without it being in any curriculum."

"I’ve been doing it for thirty years," she said. "People have always come to a door they didn’t know they were looking for." She paused. "The between-space wasn’t present before the way it’s present now." She paused. "But the reception was the same." She paused. "You come in. I make tea. We sit with what’s here." She paused. "What’s here used to be mostly the wound." She paused. "Now what’s here is more the presence." She paused. "The sitting with it is the same." She paused. "The tea is the same." She paused. "The work is the same." She looked at him. "Different content. Same work."

He thought about the correction curriculum teaching what the work was.

About the participatory curriculum teaching how to live in the presence.

About his mother at the intake desk doing both from the beginning.

Not because she had read the curriculum.

Because this was how she lived.

The coal.

The reception.

The tea.

The same.

"The curriculum is going to need a section on the intake desk," he said.

She looked at him.

"Kel can write it," she said.

"Kel," he said. "Or you."

She turned back to the window.

"I don’t write curriculum," she said. "I run the intake desk."

"The intake desk is the curriculum," he said. "What you do at it is what the curriculum is pointing toward." He paused. "Brill wrote from what she felt. Kel wrote from what the structure needed." He paused. "You could write from what the reception is." He paused. "What it means to sit with someone who has just walked into the between-space’s presence for the first time and needs someone to be present with them while they find their footing." He paused. "That’s not in the curriculum." He paused. "It needs to be."

She was quiet for a long time.

"I’ll think about it," she said.

He had learned over two years that I’ll think about it from his mother meant she had already thought about it and had reached a conclusion she wasn’t ready to announce yet.

He let it be.

They sat together in the kitchen with the between-space running through the walls and the Domain holding the Ashrow and the new streets and the people in them finding the morning different and the coal burning and the ordinary Thursday evening work of being present with what was present.

"Your father," she said.

He waited.

"He would have come to the intake desk," she said. "If I had had the intake desk when he was alive." She paused. "The morning being different. Following the difference." She paused. "He would have walked in." She paused. "He felt things precisely." She paused. "He would have felt the Domain immediately." She paused. "He would have sat down and had tea and asked: what is this." She paused. "And I would have told him." She paused. "That’s the work." She paused. "What I would have told him."

He looked at her.

"What would you have told him," he said.

She looked at the window.

At the Ashrow.

At the between-space present in it.

"The warmth you felt was real," she said quietly. "The reason you stayed was real. The coal you were in was real." She paused. "What you felt was the between-space recognizing you." She paused. "You were right to stay." She paused. "It was always worth staying for." She paused. "This is what it was worth staying for."

She turned away from the window.

Made tea.

Set it on the table.

Sat down.

The Domain ran through the kitchen walls.

The between-space present.

Real.

The coal burning.

The work continuing.

His System pulsed.
