Not at the intake desk. At the kitchen table, in the evenings, after the day’s work.

How to keep a coal in the dark.

"It’s different from keeping a coal in the warmth," she said the first evening. "In the warmth, the coal keeper maintains something that’s already there. In the dark, the coal keeper creates something that isn’t there yet. Out of nothing. Out of just the keeping itself." She paused. "The first thing you have to know is that the dark tells you the work is pointless. Every day. The dark says: there’s nothing here, there’s never been anything here, there will never be anything here, you’re keeping a coal in a place the between-space will never come to, you’re wasting your life." She paused. "The dark says that every day." She paused. "And you keep the coal anyway." She paused. "Not because you’ve defeated the doubt. The doubt doesn’t go away. You keep the coal with the doubt present." She paused. "Wanting the return. Not needing it. Not needing the proof that the work matters." She paused. "Keeping the coal because keeping it is right, even if it never works, even if you’re wrong, even if the between-space never comes." She paused. "That’s the first thing. Keeping the coal alongside the doubt that says it’s pointless." She paused. "Forever, if necessary." She paused. "Most of the first coal keepers kept it alongside that doubt their whole lives and died still doubting and the between-space came anyway, generations later." She paused. "The doubt doesn’t mean the work isn’t working." She paused. "The doubt is just the dark talking." She paused. "Keep the coal. Let the dark talk. Keep the coal anyway."

He listened.

Wrote nothing down.

Carried it the way Kel carried the questions.

"The second thing," she said another evening. "You’ll want to see results. To know the coal is catching, that the between-space is noticing, that the return is starting. You’ll look for signs every day." She paused. "Don’t." She paused. "Looking for signs is needing the outcome. The need is a pressure. Even in the dark, even alone, the need is a pressure, and the pressure works against the keeping." She paused. "Keep the coal without looking for signs. Be present without checking whether the presence is working. Trust the keeping without needing evidence of the keeping." She paused. "The between-space will come when it comes. Probably not while you’re watching. Probably not while you’re alive. Definitely not because you needed it to." She paused. "Keep the coal and don’t look for the return." She paused. "Just keep it." She paused. "The looking is the need. Release the need. Keep the coal."

He listened.

"The third thing," she said, near the end of the month. "The hardest thing. You’ll be alone. Not lonely — alone. No community, no network, no confirmation, no one who understands what you’re doing or why. Just you and the coal and the dark." She paused. "And you’ll have to be enough. By yourself. Without the between-space’s confirmation. Without anyone seeing the work. Without the reward of being recognized." She paused. "You’ll have to know you’re enough without anything outside you telling you." She paused. "The whole page I wrote — you’re enough — you’ll have to know it alone, in the dark, with nothing confirming it." She paused. "That’s the test." She paused. "Whether you can be enough by yourself." She paused. "Whether you can keep the coal because keeping it is right, knowing you’re enough whether or not it works, whether or not anyone sees, whether or not the between-space ever comes." She paused. "If you can be enough alone in the dark — you can keep a coal in the hollow territories." She paused. "If you need anything outside you to confirm you’re enough — the dark will break you." She paused. "Be enough alone." She paused. "That’s the whole skill." She paused. "Everything else is detail." She paused. "Be enough alone in the dark." She paused. "And keep the coal." She paused. "Because keeping it is right." She paused. "That’s it."

He listened.

At the whole skill.

"You did this," he said. "In the Ashrow. Before the between-space came home. Thirty years. Were you enough alone in the dark?"

His mother was quiet.

"Not always," she said. "There were years I doubted everything. Years I thought the work was pointless. Years I needed something to tell me I was enough and there was nothing." She paused. "I wasn’t always enough alone." She paused. "But I kept the coal anyway. Even the years I wasn’t enough. Even the years I doubted." She paused. "That’s the part people get wrong. You don’t have to be enough alone perfectly. You have to keep the coal even the years you’re not." She paused. "The keeping doesn’t require you to be enough every day. It requires you to keep the coal on the days you’re enough and the days you’re not." She paused. "I kept it through both." She paused. "Thirty years of both." She paused. "And the between-space came home." She paused. "Not because I was enough every day." She paused. "Because I kept the coal every day." She paused. "Even the days I wasn’t enough." She paused. "Keep the coal." She paused. "Especially on the days you’re not enough." She paused. "Those are the days the keeping matters most." She paused. "That’s what I learned." She paused. "Thirty years." She paused. "Keep the coal even when you can’t be enough." She paused. "Because keeping it is the thing." She paused. "Not being enough." She paused. "The keeping."

He looked at his mother.

"That’s the truest thing you’ve taught me," he said.

"It’s the truest thing I know," she said. "Keep the coal even when you can’t be enough." She paused. "Especially then." She paused. "That’s how you keep a coal in the dark." She paused. "Not by being strong enough." She paused. "By keeping it through the weakness." She paused. "Through the doubt." She paused. "Through the years you’re not enough." She paused. "Keep the coal." She paused. "And eventually the between-space comes." She paused. "Not because you were strong." She paused. "Because you kept the coal." She paused. "Through everything." She paused. "That’s the work." She paused. "Now I’ve taught you." She paused. "You teach the young ones." She paused. "And we all keep the coal." She paused. "In the dark." She paused. "Until the between-space comes." She paused. "After us." She paused. "Through the chain."

She finished the tea.

The teaching was done.

She would leave in the morning.

For the hollow territories.

To keep a coal in the dark.

Through everything.

Until the between-space came.

After her.

His display stayed quiet.

The between-space saw all of it.

The coal keeper.

Going into the dark.

To bring it home.

Author’s Note: His mother teaches him for a month how to keep a coal in the dark — the three things: keep it alongside the doubt (the doubt is just the dark talking); don’t look for the return (the looking is the need); be enough alone. Then she corrects her own page with the truest thing she knows: you won’t be enough every day, so keep the coal even on the days you’re not — the keeping is the thing, not the being enough. She kept the Ashrow’s coal through thirty years of both, and the between-space came home not because she was strong but because she kept the coal through everything.
