They arrived in Valdenmoor on Sunday.
The Domain received them at the boundary — the same reception, the self-reinforcing honest architecture, the between-space present in the clean quality of the city’s between-space running.
But fuller than when they had left.
He stood at the five-kilometer boundary for a moment.
Felt the difference.
The Domain had expanded again in the two weeks they had been away.
Not by boundary — the Domain’s formal edge was still at five kilometers. The expansion was inward. Deeper. The between-space’s quality within the Domain having increased in richness during the two weeks without a specific intervention producing the increase.
The virtuous cycle running while he was absent.
The honest participation sustaining the presence.
The presence deepening the honest participation.
The cycle producing more richness independently of any specific work.
He stood at the boundary and felt it.
His mother stopped beside him.
"Different," she said.
"Richer," he said. "Two weeks of the virtuous cycle running without intervention."
"The coal burning on its own," she said.
"Yes," he said.
They walked into the city.
The school had changed while he was away.
He noticed it on Monday morning when he went to the session rooms.
Not the building. The quality.
The thirteenth class running with a specific character he hadn’t felt before.
He stood in the doorway of the main session room.
Twenty-four students. Calla at the front but not teaching in the standard sense — facilitating, which was different. The students were presenting to each other. Not the curriculum. Their own work.
A student from a post-threshold western territory describing what the deep correspondence felt like when it arrived in her community six months ago. Not the correction work’s description. The lived experience. What it felt like from inside the community the morning the ambient communication became present.
Another student from a territory still in the correction phase listening with the specific attention of someone receiving information about something they hadn’t yet experienced but were building toward.
The thirteenth class teaching itself.
Not building the curriculum like the eighth class.
Using what the curriculum had built.
Extending it through their own lived experience.
He watched for twenty minutes.
Then went to find Calla.
She was in the archive.
"The thirteenth class," he said.
"Yes," she said.
"They’re past the curriculum," he said.
"Past it and in it simultaneously," she said. "The students from post-threshold territories are in the participatory curriculum’s lived expression. The students from correction-phase territories are in the foundation sessions." She paused. "They’re both running at once." She paused. "I stopped trying to keep them in the same session two weeks ago." She paused. "The mixing is more useful than the separation." She paused. "The lived experience from the post-threshold students teaches the correction-phase students what they’re building toward faster than the curriculum can." She paused. "And the correction-phase students’ urgency keeps the post-threshold students grounded in what the work requires." She paused. "They teach each other."
He thought about what he had watched.
About the student describing the deep correspondence.
About the other student listening.
"Asta’s school," he said. "Two rooms, a courtyard, twenty-three students. The expressive institution." He paused. "Is that where the thirteenth class is pointing toward."
Calla looked at him.
"The thirteenth class will graduate in four months," she said. "Some of them will go to territories still in the correction phase. Some to post-threshold territories. Some to territories like the southern one — newly post-threshold, the expressive institutions beginning." She paused. "Some of them will build expressive institutions in their home territories." She paused. "The same chain." She paused. "The school pointing toward what the students go back to build."
He looked at the session room.
At the thirteenth class running.
At what it was building toward.
"Kel," he said.
"In the archive," Calla said. "Has been since Thursday."
He went to find Kel.
Kel was at the documentation desk with approximately four notebooks open simultaneously and the specific focused expression of someone who had been pulling a thread for several days and was close to where it led.
He sat across from them.
Kel didn’t look up.
"The expressive curriculum," Kel said.
"You’ve been building it," he said.
"Trying," Kel said. "The participatory curriculum was hard because I had to build the framework from observation and questions." They paused. "The expressive curriculum is harder because the framework doesn’t exist yet. Not even in the observation stage." They paused. "Brae and the fourteen people in the southern territory are the only empirical data." They paused. "Asta’s documentation from two weeks of building." They paused. "Your mother’s seven pages." They paused. "Lyse’s channel observations." They paused. "It’s not enough data for a curriculum." They paused. "But it’s enough to see the shape of what the curriculum will need."
"Tell me the shape," he said.
Kel looked at the notebooks.
"The correction curriculum teaches how to address what’s wrong," they said. "The participatory curriculum teaches how to sustain what’s right." They paused. "The expressive curriculum teaches something different from both." They paused. "How to receive and develop what the full presence naturally produces." They paused. "Not correct. Not sustain. Receive and develop." They paused. "The three functions are all present simultaneously but the emphasis shifts depending on where in the arc a territory is." They paused. "The expressive curriculum is for territories where the full presence is running and the natural development is happening and the people in it need support in receiving and developing what develops." They paused. "Brae’s situation." They paused. "The fourteen people with Assessment Ongoing abilities building language from inside." They paused. "The farmer who spent three days with your mother finding words for what he’d been growing toward." They paused. "All of them receiving and developing." They paused. "The curriculum teaches the practitioner how to support that." They looked up. "The holder function your mother described. The intake applied to expression." They paused. "That’s the core of the expressive curriculum." They paused. "Hold the space while the language forms." They paused. "The practitioner’s job is the holding, not the providing."
He looked at Kel.
At the four open notebooks.
At the shape of the third curriculum forming.
"You’ll need more data," he said. "More than two weeks of Asta’s school."
"I know," Kel said. "The curriculum will build as the expressive institutions build." They paused. "Same as the participatory curriculum built through eight classes." They paused. "The expressive curriculum will build through the first generation of expressive institution graduates." They paused. "I’m writing the beginning." They paused. "The beginning that points toward what the building will fill in." They paused. "The framework for the framework."
The framework for the framework.

He looked at them.
At nineteen years old.

At what the difficult soil had grown in a person who had arrived at the school at sixteen with questions nobody could fully answer.

"Yes," Kel said. "Three students specifically are operating at the edge of the participatory curriculum’s framework." They paused. "They’re not asking questions I can answer from the existing sections." They paused. "They’re asking questions the expressive curriculum will address." They paused. "I’ve been documenting the questions." They paused. "The questions are the beginning of the expressive curriculum’s problem set." They paused. "The same way Cam’s questions from the ninth class were the beginning of the participatory curriculum’s advanced section."
He thought about the chain.
