Not through the threading network or the correspondence chains or the Framework Inscription.
She set it on the kitchen table before breakfast. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
Seven pages.
In her handwriting.
Practical. Direct. The specific quality of someone who had been doing the work for thirty years and was describing it the way you describe work you know from the inside — with the specific details that only the doing produces and without the theoretical framing that the doing doesn’t require.
He read it while she made tea.
The section was titled: The Intake.
It opened with a description of the intake desk. Not metaphorical — literal. The specific desk, the specific chair, the specific position at the clinic’s entrance where the first contact happened. Why the desk was positioned where it was. What the person coming through the door saw when they arrived. What they needed to find in the room before they could receive anything else.
They needed to find someone who was not waiting for them to explain themselves.
The person who comes through the door for the first time is carrying something they don’t have words for yet. They feel the between-space in the Domain and they followed the feeling and they arrived at the door and they came through it. They don’t know what they came for. They know they came.
The first task of reception is not to explain what happened to them.
It is to be present with them before they know what happened.
The explanation comes after. The presence comes first.
If you explain before you are present — you have given them a framework before they have had the experience. The framework replaces the experience. They receive the words rather than the thing.
Be present first. Let the thing be there. Then name it when they are ready to receive the naming.
This is the intake.
He kept reading.
The section described specific situations. The person who comes in afraid. The person who comes in excited. The person who comes in not knowing what they feel. The person who comes in having felt the quality shift when their institution made a choice that wasn’t honest and who is confused and possibly angry.
Each situation: what the reception looked like. Specifically.
Not the theoretical reception. The practical one.
When the person is afraid: do not move toward them faster than they move toward you. The between-space is already present in the room. It is doing the work you would try to do by moving toward them. Your movement can interrupt the between-space’s work. Stay still. Offer tea. The tea is not the welcome. The tea is something to do with the hands while the between-space does what the between-space does.
When the person is excited: let them speak. Do not match their excitement. The excitement is the first surface. Under the excitement is the experience. The experience is what they came to find reception for. The excitement will settle. Receive what settles.
When the person does not know what they feel: this is the most common one. They feel something and followed it and arrived. They cannot name the feeling. Do not name it for them immediately. Sit with them in the not-naming. The between-space named what is present before you speak. Your premature naming can interfere with the between-space’s naming. Wait. The person will find the words when the words are ready. Your presence while the words are forming is the reception.
When the person is confused and possibly angry because the between-space showed them something an institution did that wasn’t honest: receive the confusion and the anger first. The correction work comes later. The institution will be addressed. The oversight board exists for exactly this. But the person in front of you came because they felt something true and the truth was disorienting and they need someone to receive the disorientation before they can do anything with it.
This is always the sequence. Receive first. Address after.
He read the full seven pages.
Then read the last paragraph.
The intake desk is not a special position. It is the practice described in the curriculum expressed as a specific role in a specific place. Anyone in any territory can be the intake. The correction worker who finishes the root work and sits with the person whose fragment just expressed — that is the intake. The coal keeper who is present when the morning is different in the new coverage streets — that is the intake. The ninth class student who names what the between-space communicated when the quality shifted — that is the intake after the naming, when the person is receiving the named thing.
The intake is wherever someone is present with someone else who has just encountered the between-space honestly for the first time.
The practice is the same in all of those places.
Be present first. Let the thing be there. Then name it when they are ready.
The tea is optional. The presence is not.
He set the pages down.
His mother set the tea in front of him.
"It’s good," he said.
"It’s accurate," she said.
There was a difference. He had learned this.
Good was a judgment about quality.
Accurate was a report on correspondence to the actual thing.
His mother described her work as accurate.
Not because she was modest.
Because accurate was the right word.
The section was an accurate description of what she did.
Which made it very good.
"The curriculum needs this," he said.
"I know," she said. "That’s why I wrote it."
He looked at the seven pages.
At thirty years of practice described with the precision of someone who knew the work from the inside.
At the specific details that only the doing produced.
At what the school needed and hadn’t had until now.
"Kel will want to integrate this," he said.
"I’ve already sent Kel a copy," she said. "Through the threading network this morning."
He looked at her.
"You sent it to Kel before you set it on the table for me," he said.
"Kel is the one who needed it for the curriculum," she said. "You needed it for yourself." She paused. "Different priorities."
He looked at the seven pages.
At his mother’s handwriting.
At the cracked red hands that had done the work the pages described.
At Level 3.
Washerwoman.
Oversight board chair.
Coal keeper.
The intake.
"Your father," he said. "If he had come through the door."
She picked up her tea.
"I would have done exactly this," she said. "Been present before I explained. Let the thing be there." She paused. "He would have sat down. He would have had the tea." She paused. "He would have said: what is this place." She paused. "And I would have said: it’s the place you felt the warmth from." She paused. "And he would have understood." She paused. "He already understood." She paused. "He just needed someone present while he received the understanding."
He looked at the kitchen.
At the between-space running through the walls.
At the actual thing present in the approximation.
At the soup that would be ready on Thursday mornings.
At the ordinary work.
At the reception.
At home.
"Kel," he said. "The section Kel will write around this." He paused. "The practice of the presence." He paused. "The intake as the fundamental expression of it." He paused. "It completes the participatory curriculum."
"I thought it might," she said.
She drank her tea.
He drank his.
The Domain ran through the kitchen walls.
The coal burning.
The work continuing.
