Kael stood at the table’s anchor point.
The binding was visible to Death Sense — not a physical thing but a concentration of old intention, the shape of a choice made three hundred years ago by a woman who hadn’t been ready to leave, compressed and calcified by time into something that had grown far beyond what she’d intended.
He pressed his right hand against it.
He felt it immediately — vast and complex, the way the intelligent construct had been complex but deeper, more layered, three centuries of accumulation rather than three centuries of simple feeding. Maren had been right about the unraveling — it was not like pulling a core. It was like finding the first thread of a knot and following it, carefully, through every loop and crossing, without pulling too hard or the whole thing would tighten instead of releasing.
He had no skill for this.
No System classification. No rank. No notification telling him the yield.
He had the Class, and the Class was the space between living and dead, and the binding was made of the same substance, and he understood it the way he understood his own hands.
He unraveled it.
It took eleven minutes.
He knew because Sera counted quietly in the background — not intrusively, just steadily, the way she did everything, keeping track because keeping track was how she processed things she couldn’t otherwise help with.
At the eight minute mark his Spirit dropped below fifty percent and the unraveling slowed — he pushed through it with the same will he’d used on the intelligent construct’s core, the thing underneath Class and Level, and it held.
At ten minutes the binding began to come apart in earnest — not the thread-by-thread unraveling of the first nine minutes but a cascade, each released loop freeing three more, the whole structure recognizing what was happening and — not resisting. Cooperating. As if it had been waiting for someone to find the right place to begin.
At eleven minutes it released.

Around him, the preserved city was changing.
The bound dead — eight hundred and forty-seven of them, standing in every doorway and street corner of the underground complex — were releasing. Not violently. Quietly. The amber light in their eyes fading by degrees, the preserved forms settling, three centuries of held tension finally exhaling. They didn’t collapse or dissolve. They simply — finished. Completed something that had been interrupted.
One by one and then in dozens and then all at once the amber eyes went dark and peaceful.
Kael watched it happen and felt something he didn’t have a clean word for — something that sat between grief and relief and the specific feeling of a debt being paid that you didn’t know you owed.
Asha was still in her chair.
She was the last.
Her grey eyes — his grey, the color of his death light, the color of Death’s Chosen — were on him, and in them was the expression of someone watching the last piece of something fall into place after three hundred years.
"The map," she said. "The key. Use them well."
"I will," he said.
"The Veil anchors — the northeastern one first. It’s the weakest. The southwestern one last — it’s the primary anchor, the one the second Grand Inquisitor placed personally. It will resist more than the others." A pause. "Maren’s research has the sequence. I left annotations in the margins of the codex."
He looked at her.
"You left annotations," he said. "In the Ancient Codex. That’s been sealed in this dungeon for three centuries."
"I had time," she said simply.
He almost smiled. Almost.
"Thank you," he said.
The grey eyes held his for one more moment — calm, complete, ready.
"Don’t waste it," Asha said.
The grey faded.
She was gone.
The chair was empty. The book on the table was closed. The dungeon master’s luminescence faded from the walls and floor and air, and the preserved city went dark except for Sera’s lantern and the natural grey light that Kael generated now without thinking about it — the Death’s Chosen ambient glow that had started appearing at Level 25 and which he’d decided to simply accept.

Kael stood in the dark of what had been the Iron Catacombs and looked at the three paths.
Death Lord. Fifty minion slots. Army and dominion.
Soul Reaper. Personal power. Lethal at any level difference.
Undying Sovereign. Both. Thirty minion slots. Enhanced personal power. Permanent death aura. The path that had required Level 30 and was now open.
He thought about Voss at Level 61.
He thought about seven Veil anchors beneath the city.
He thought about eight hundred and forty-seven people whose amber eyes had gone peaceful and a woman who had waited three hundred years to finish what she’d started.
He thought about what kind of thing he was becoming and what kind of thing he wanted to be.
Yes, he thought.

Thirty. Undying Sovereign. Twenty levels from the Veil.
Sera was reading the evolution notifications over his shoulder — he could tell by her breathing pattern changing. She finished and was quiet for a moment.
"Undying," she said. "Once per day you survive a fatal hit."
"Yes."
"That’s — " She stopped. Started again. "That changes the calculus on Voss considerably."
"Yes," he said.
Maren was holding the Ancient Codex — holding it with both hands, carefully, the way it held things that mattered. Its ancient eyes moved from the book to the empty chair where Asha had been, and for a moment the Lich was simply an old thing contemplating an older thing’s ending, and Kael left it to that without interruption.
Then Maren straightened. Tucked the codex under one arm. Looked at Kael with the steady practical attention that was its default mode for everything except the things that genuinely moved it.
"The northeastern anchor first," Maren said. "As she instructed."
"Not tonight," Kael said.
They both looked at him.
"Tonight we go home," he said. "My mother made a rule about dinner."
Sera stared at him.
"You just reached Level 30 and evolved your Class and received a map to seven Veil anchors that could dismantle the Church’s power structure," she said. "And you’re thinking about dinner."
"I’m thinking about my mother," he said. "Who has been alone in a strange building for two days and doesn’t know where I am." He looked at the empty chair one more time. "Asha waited three hundred years. The anchors have been there for a hundred and forty. They’ll be there tomorrow."
A silence.
"Besides," he said, picking up the key and the map and pocketing both, "I need to read Asha’s annotations before I touch the first anchor. Maren needs to cross-reference with the research copies. And Sera — " he looked at her " — you need to draw me a route through the underground tunnels that avoids every Church monitoring point between here and the hall of Ascension."
She was already opening her notebook.
"I started it while you were unraveling the binding," she said.
Of course she had.
He walked toward the staircase — up through five floors of what had been the Iron Catacombs and was now simply old stone and empty passages and the quiet of three hundred years of waiting finally completed — and his formation fell in around him, and Maren walked at his right, and Sera walked at his left, and above them Valdenmoor went about its evening with no idea that the floor beneath it had just changed.
