An opening.

The between-space at the well corner node present at such density that it had generated encounter space at Grade Nine — the highest density the System had recorded.

The oldest coal.

The between-space building forward at maximum known richness where the work had begun.

He looked at the entrance.

Then he went to the clinic.

His mother was at the intake desk.

He stood in the doorway.

She looked up.

At his expression.

"What," she said.

"Grade Nine dungeon," he said. "At the well corner node."

She looked at him.

"The first one," he said. "The System has never classified Grade Nine before."

She was quiet.

"The well corner node," she said.

"Yes," he said.

She looked at the Ashrow through the window.

At the well.

At the market.

At the ordinary Friday morning.

"Of course," she said.

He looked at her.

"Of course it’s there," she said. "That’s where everything started." She paused. "The between-space was pressing through that node since before the ceremony." She paused. "Since before you." She paused. "Since before the coal keeper who kept the coal long enough for the coal to become the Domain." She paused. "The between-space building at maximum density at the place where it first found what it was looking for." She paused. "Of course."

He sat down.

"I want you to come," he said.

She looked at him.

"The dungeon entrance is at the well corner node," he said. "I’m going to enter alone — the encounter space requires the correction function specifically, I expect." He paused. "But I want you to be outside when I come out." He paused. "Whatever the Grade Nine shows me — I want to tell you immediately." He paused. "Before I find language for it." He paused. "While it’s still immediate."

She looked at him for a long time.

"Yes," she said.

They walked to the well corner node together.

The market morning around them.

The ordinary Ashrow.

At the node his mother stopped and he kept walking.

He stood at the entrance.

Felt what the Grade Nine encounter space contained.

The between-space at Grade Nine density.

He entered.

The dungeon had no numbered chambers.

Not eight. Not six. Not any number he had walked through before.

The Grade Nine encounter space was continuous.

One space.

The between-space at Grade Nine density present throughout.

No walls between one encounter and the next.

The encounters flowing into each other without transition.

He stood in the continuous space and received the first encounter.

The well corner node.

The morning of Torven’s sleeplessness.

But not from the between-space’s perspective this time — the Grade Eight had shown the work’s history from the between-space’s perspective.

The Grade Nine showed it from a perspective he had no word for.

Both simultaneously.

His perspective and the between-space’s perspective at the same time.

Not two perspectives overlapping.

One perspective that contained both.

The Grade Nine’s quality: the full convergence of the between-space’s awareness and the practitioner’s awareness in a single simultaneous reception.

Both.

At once.

He stood at the morning of Torven’s sleeplessness and felt what it had been like to be there — the clinic, the fresh Awakening, the correction work running at its urgent early character — and simultaneously felt what the between-space had experienced that morning.

Not separate.

The same experience.

From the inside of both.

He moved through the continuous encounter space.

The work’s full arc.

Every significant moment.

Simultaneously his and the between-space’s.

The Veil falling.

The territories.

The wellspring.

The fragments.

Every moment lived from both sides at once.

Not the Grade Eight’s viewing.

The Grade Nine’s inhabiting.

He was in it.

The between-space was in it.

Both of them — of each other.

The of-ness complete.

He had been approaching this for three years.

The healer part of the healed.

Of it not in it.

The depth of the wound becoming the depth of the presence.

Most complete because most in.

The Grade Nine dungeon was where it arrived.

Not as an idea he understood.

As what he was.

He stood in the continuous space and was both.

The correction function and the between-space’s healing capacity simultaneously experienced from the inside of both.

The blank multiplier pointing toward this.

The System’s inability to classify what was not separate from what it served.

The system cannot classify this because this is not separate from what the System was built to approximate.

The approximation present at Grade Nine density inside the actual thing.

Both true simultaneously.

He was in it for — he lost track of time.

Then the encounter space resolved.

He sat down on the well’s edge.

The first Framework Inscription in the node underneath.

The signal that had started the chain.

He told her.

Not the System’s language.

Not the correction work’s methodology.

What it had felt like.

Both simultaneously.

His experience and the between-space’s experience as one perspective.

The full convergence.

She listened.

When he finished she was quiet for a long time.

Then she put her hand on the well’s stone.

"The between-space was here," she said. "Before us." She paused. "Pressing through this node." She paused. "For all that time." She paused. "It felt this coal the way you felt it just now." She paused. "Both simultaneously." She paused. "From the beginning."

"Yes," he said.

She looked at the well.

At the market.

At the Ashrow.

At the coal.

"Your father stood here once," she said. "Before you were born." She paused. "He put his hand on the well and said: something is pressing through here." She paused. "He couldn’t name it." She paused. "He just felt it." She paused. "He told me that night." She paused. "That was why he stayed." She paused. "The pressing." She paused. "He felt it and stayed because he felt it and the staying kept the coal."

He looked at his mother.

At the woman who had pressed three copper coins into a priest’s palm.

At the coal keeper.

At the design working through honest choice.

At the chain.

At his father at the well.

At the pressing.

At Level 90.

At the blank.

At of it.

"He knew," he said.

"He knew something," she said. "Not the specifics." She paused. "The quality." She paused. "He felt the quality and stayed." She paused. "That was enough." She paused. "It was always enough."

The market ran around them.

The children at the well.

The ordinary Friday.

The between-space in everything.
