Her name had been Asha.

She told him this the way people tell you things they haven’t said aloud in a very long time — carefully, like testing weight on an old bridge.

She had built this complex three hundred years before Valdenmoor existed — before the Church, before the System, before the Awakening ceremonies and the Level architecture and the multipliers that sorted human worth into numbers. She had built it with a group of physicians and scholars who believed that death was not an enemy to be feared but a process to be understood, and that understanding it was the most profound service anyone could offer the living.

The System had arrived — or emerged, she wasn’t certain which — approximately a century after her death. She had watched it from floor five with the particular clarity of someone who had no stake in its politics and three hundred years to observe its effects.

"It began well," she said. "The first generation used it honestly — a framework for understanding individual capacity, for matching people to work that suited them. The multipliers were not meant to be inherited advantages. They were meant to be — descriptive. Not prescriptive."

"What changed?" Sera asked. Her stylus was moving steadily.

"Power," Asha said simply. "The same thing that always changes good systems into bad ones. The people who benefited from high multipliers found ways to ensure their children received high multipliers. The Church discovered that controlling the Awakening meant controlling the System meant controlling everything." A pause. "The Veil was not part of the original architecture. It was added. By the second Grand Inquisitor, approximately a hundred and forty years ago. I watched them build it."

Kael leaned forward slightly. "You watched them build the Veil."

"I watched everything from down here. The dungeon’s awareness extends further than you might expect after three centuries." Her grey eyes moved to him steadily. "I know what you intend to do. I know about Voss. I know about the warrant and your mother and the records annex in the lower guild district." A pause. "I have been watching you since you entered the Greymaw."

The chamber was very quiet.

"You’ve been watching the whole time," Kael said.

"I needed to be certain," she said. "The Death’s Chosen who came before you — I watched them too. Two of them had the right anger. Neither of them had the right foundation. One wanted personal power above everything else. One was too consumed by grief to think clearly." Her grey eyes didn’t waver. "You want power for a specific purpose and you have people around you who prevent you from losing sight of that purpose." She glanced at Sera. At Maren. "That matters more than the multiplier."

Kael absorbed this.

"What do you want from me?" he asked.

"The same thing the bound dead want. Release." She looked at the open book on the table. "I have spent three centuries developing a method. A way to unwind the binding — mine and theirs simultaneously. But it requires a Death’s Chosen to execute it. The architecture of what I built and what the dungeon became is — " She paused, searching for the right word. "Knotted. Too complex for any standard undead ability to untangle. It needs something that operates at the level of death itself. Not a skill. Not a Class ability." She looked at him. "What you are. The source."

"What does it involve?"

"You place your hand on the binding’s anchor — " she touched the table, indicating something beneath it " — and you pull. The same way you pulled the Bone Colossus’s core. The same way you drain constructs. But instead of destruction you are — unraveling. Releasing rather than consuming." A pause. "It will cost you significantly. Spirit. Death Affinity. Possibly a level — the System may register it as expenditure rather than gain."

"Possibly a level," Sera repeated, her stylus pausing.

"Possibly. I am not certain. The System did not exist when I built this binding. I cannot predict its accounting with complete accuracy."

Kael looked at the table. He looked at the bound dead visible through the hall’s open doors — hundreds of them, standing in the preserved streets of a city that had been trying to heal people when everything went wrong.

He thought about Maren on a dungeon throne for seventeen years.

He thought about a Level 3 Washerwoman who had been told before she was born exactly how much she was worth.

He thought about the Veil at Level 50 and a second Grand Inquisitor who had added it to the architecture a hundred and forty years ago because the people who already had power had decided that was the most efficient way to keep it.

"And after the binding releases?" he said. "What happens to you?"

Asha was quiet for a moment.

"I pass," she said. Simply. Finally. "Three hundred and twelve years is long enough." A pause that carried the full weight of that number in it. "I have been ready for a very long time. I simply could not go without finishing this."

The grey eyes — the same grey as his death light, he realized, and had been looking at it since he entered without knowing what it meant — were completely steady.

"What do I get?" Kael said.

Not coldly. Practically. The way he said everything that mattered.

Asha reached under the table and produced two things.

The first was a key — iron, old, carved with symbols he didn’t recognize.

The second was a map.

Kael stared at the map.

Seven Veil anchor points. Beneath the city. Locations unknown to everyone.

The Veil wasn’t maintained from above. It was rooted below — seven anchors buried beneath Valdenmoor that the Church had planted a hundred and forty years ago and presumably maintained and had never needed to defend because nobody knew they existed.

"You’ve known about the Veil anchors for a hundred and forty years," he said.

"Yes."

"And you waited."

"I was bound to this floor." A pause. "And the right person had not come yet."

Maren made a sound — quiet, compressed, the sound of someone who had spent seventeen years researching the Veil’s architecture and was now looking at a map that rendered most of that research redundant and felt something complicated about it.

"The key," Kael said. "What does it open?"

"The anchor points," Asha said. "Each one is sealed. The key will open them and — given sufficient Death’s Chosen ability — allow the anchor to be destroyed from within rather than above." She paused. "Destroying all seven anchors simultaneously collapses the Veil. Not weakens. Collapses entirely. Every person in Valdenmoor above Level 50 — every person who was told they had reached their ceiling — begins advancing again."

"Simultaneously," Sera said sharply. "Seven locations. One person."

"Not simultaneously in the same moment," Asha said. "Within the same ritual window. Approximately six hours." She looked at Kael. "You would need to move quickly. And you would need to not be noticed."

"Ring of Veiled Passage," Kael said.

"Yes." A pause. "I know about the ring. Maren made it, if I am not mistaken." Her grey eyes moved to the Lich. "From the design in your research — I recognized it. Even three hundred years old, I recognize the methodology."

Maren inclined its head. "You taught the methodology," it said quietly. "Your work. My copies of your work. Fragments that survived the Church’s purges."

Something moved in Asha’s face — the first thing that had moved there since Kael entered. Not quite a smile. Something older and quieter than a smile.

"Then it comes back to me in the end," she said. "That seems right."
