"You ran the model," Asta said to his mother.
"The intake desk," his mother said. "Yes."
"Hael described it in the consultation," Asta said. "The reception before the explanation. The presence before the naming." She paused. "I’ve been building the school on that model." She paused. "I didn’t know the person who ran it was coming."
His mother looked at the territory.
At the community center that Asta had been using for the school’s early sessions.
At the students visible through the windows.
"Show me what you’ve built," she said.
Asta showed her.
The school Asta had built in three months was not finished.
It had two rooms, a courtyard, and a founding faculty of four people — all of them community members who had spent the three months since the oversight board’s establishment discovering what they had developed naturally in the full presence and finding they had things worth teaching.
A woman named Rem who had been a weaver for twenty years and had discovered, when the between-space’s full presence arrived, that her weaving had been doing what Essa’s weaving had been doing in Valdenmoor — running the between-space’s quality through the cloth — and that now, in the full presence, she could teach that directly. Not weaving technique. The quality the weaving carried.
A man named Sol who had been farming for forty years and had been following the gradient in his fields without knowing that’s what he was doing — the same principle as Cassin in Ashenveil — and who now understood the gradient well enough to teach others to feel it.
A teenager named Brae, seventeen years old, who had gone through the honest Awakening ceremony three months ago and whose ability had expressed fully in the full presence and who was still learning what the ability was but was teaching the learning itself — how to receive an ability that had just expressed and find its full character.
And Asta herself.
Who had been asking what you build that has never existed before and had started building an answer before she had the full theory.
He walked through the two rooms.
Sat in the courtyard.
Watched the students — twenty-three of them, ages ranging from fourteen to sixty-seven — working with the founding faculty.
Not the correction curriculum.
Not the participatory curriculum.
Something that didn’t have a name yet.
The curriculum of the expressive institution.
In its earliest form.
Raw.
Not finished.
Real.
He thought about Aldren.

The participatory institution’s framework is designed for sustaining what the correction built." She paused. "I’m building something different. I don’t have the framework for what I’m building."
He thought about this.
"Because it hasn’t been built before," he said.
"Yes," she said.
"The framework doesn’t exist yet," he said.
"Yes," she said.
"Then the framework is what you’re building alongside the institution," he said. "Same as every class at Aldren’s school built the curriculum it needed. You’re building the framework by building the institution." He paused. "Document as you go. The documentation becomes the framework." He paused. "Not the framework for all expressive institutions. The framework for this one, in this territory, with these people." He paused. "Other territories building expressive institutions will adapt your documentation the way the correction workers adapted the gradient methodology to their specific geographies." He paused. "The territory teaches the practitioner." He paused. "The institution teaches the framework." He paused. "You learn the framework by building."
Asta looked at him.
"That’s not reassuring," she said.
"No," he said. "It’s accurate."
She was quiet for a moment.
"All right," she said. "What are you here to contribute."
He thought about the Grade Eight dungeons.
About the future the second expression had shown.
About the fully expressed person two generations forward.

"The between-space’s aspiration," he said. "What the between-space is working toward in the communities in its full presence." He paused. "The future the between-space is building toward." He paused. "Two generations of honest participation in the full presence." He paused. "That’s what the school is building toward." He paused. "The between-space showed me."
Asta looked at him for a long time.
Then at the courtyard where his mother was sitting with Rem.
At the specific quality of someone receiving something and naming it after.
At the model running.
"The fully expressed person," she said. "That’s the foundation."
"Yes," he said.
"Not the honest version of anything old," she said.
"No," he said. "The expressive version of something new." He paused. "What the between-space in full presence produces in a person who has been supported in expressing what naturally develops." He paused. "What Brae is three months into becoming." He paused. "What the students in your school are at the beginning of." He paused. "What two generations produces."
Asta looked at Brae across the courtyard.
At seventeen years old navigating a fully expressed ability with no model for how to do it.
