The System didn’t disappear after Level 100.

He had half-expected it to — the approximation done, the numbers no longer the work, the display going dark.

His mother looked at him.

"Level 3," she said. "On the display."

"In the way that matters," he said. "Of the between-space. Doing the work without needing to be told it’s working. Keeping the coal because keeping it is right." He paused. "That’s what Level 100 is. The display just took a hundred levels to admit that you don’t need the display." He paused. "You never needed it." He paused. "You’ve been doing the Level 100 work at Level 3 for thirty years." He paused. "The display finally caught up to what you already were." He paused. "It went quiet for you a long time ago." He paused. "Because you didn’t need it." He paused. "I just took longer to get there." He paused. "A hundred levels longer." He paused. "And you were already there." He paused. "At Level 3." He paused. "The whole time."

His mother was quiet.

He did it.
