Dael had been quiet about it — which meant either the pattern was still forming or the pattern was significant enough to warrant certainty before presentation.
He found out which on a Thursday morning.
Dael came to the kitchen table.
Not the archive. Not the oversight board annex. The kitchen table, which was where Dael brought things that required the specific quality of the kitchen’s honest work running through it.
He poured tea.
Dael sat.
"The expressive cycle pattern," Dael said. "I’ve been building the documentation for six weeks. I want to show you what it shows."
"Show me," he said.
Dael spread the documentation.
Not as dramatic as the full-sequence pattern from months ago. Quieter. The specific quality of something that had been accumulating carefully and was now ready to be seen.
"The expressive cycle distribution," Dael said. "Mira’s spatial data. The territories where the between-space’s active building is running at the highest quality." They paused. "The oldest coals, as I said when the data first arrived." They paused. "I’ve been running a deeper analysis since then." They paused. "The pattern shows something more specific than oldest coals." They paused. "The expressive cycle is running richest in territories where the coal keeping and the correction work and the participatory work have all three been running simultaneously for the longest duration." They paused. "Not the longest coal alone. Not the most intensive correction work alone. Not the deepest participatory practice alone." They paused. "All three together. The longest." They paused. "The Ashrow is the highest concentration point in the world."
He looked at the documentation.
At the Ashrow.
At the coal his mother had kept.
At the correction work he had run.
At the participatory practices the school had built.
At all three running simultaneously in the same place for the full duration.
"The three phases," he said. "Running together rather than sequentially."
"Yes," Dael said. "The correction curriculum described correction work. The participatory curriculum described participatory work. The expressive institutions are building expressive work." They paused. "We have been treating them as sequential phases. The correction phase giving way to the participatory phase giving way to the expressive phase." They paused. "The pattern says they were always meant to run simultaneously." They paused. "The sequential framing was the absence-era necessity — the correction work urgent enough to be primary, the participatory work secondary, the expressive work not yet possible." They paused. "In the full presence all three run together." They paused. "The territories where all three have been running simultaneously longest are producing the richest expressive cycles." They paused. "The correction work was not preparation for the participatory work which was preparation for the expressive work." They paused. "Each is an expression of the same thing at different depths of the between-space’s presence." They paused. "The coal, the return, the building — one thing at three depths running simultaneously."
He sat with this.
The three phases as depths rather than stages.
All three present at once in a world at full presence.
The correction work still running where the wound was present.
The participatory work running where the between-space had returned.
The expressive work beginning where the between-space was building actively.
Not sequentially.
Simultaneously.
The territory that had all three running longest at the richest concentration.
"The curriculum," he said.
"Needs to change," Dael said. "Not the content. The framing." They paused. "The correction curriculum framed as the necessary urgency of the absence era. The participatory curriculum as the transition. The expressive curriculum as the destination." They paused. "The new framing: three depths of the same work, all present when the full presence is running." They paused. "The practitioner working at all three depths simultaneously rather than progressing through them sequentially." They paused. "The school training people to hold all three rather than to master one and move to the next."
He thought about Kel.

About what the reframing meant for the school’s structure.
He sent a message to Kel and Calla together.

About the expression in the weaving, the farming, the storytelling.

"The curriculum," he said again. "The three depths." He paused. "The school has been teaching one depth at a time and sending students into the field one depth deep." He paused. "The practitioner who holds all three is more effective than the practitioner who holds one."
"Yes," Dael said. "The pattern shows this clearly in the territory data." They paused. "The territories where the practitioners are holding all three depths — consciously or not — are the territories with the richest expressive cycle quality." They paused. "The territories where the practitioners are holding one depth are behind on the pattern." They paused. "Not behind in a concerning way." They paused. "Behind in the sense of not yet reached the simultaneous depth." They paused. "Reachable." They paused. "With the revised framing."
He nodded.
Kel arrived ten minutes later.
Calla five minutes after.
He showed them the documentation.
The specific expression on Kel’s face when they understood the reframing was the specific expression of someone for whom something that had been structurally wrong in the work they were building had just been correctly identified.
