The responses began arriving before dawn.

Not through the Wren threading — through the Framework Inscription’s bidirectional channel, through the Grave Walker’s field reach, through the World Threat Response, through every between-frequency channel the network had established in the six weeks since Nara’s first node reading.

Simultaneously.

From twelve cities.

From between-walkers who had felt the combined signal and recognized the frequency of three Death’s Chosen running at full capacity and understood immediately what it meant that three had been running simultaneously when one alone had been enough to reach them.

From ordinary people who had felt something named and had woken up in the predawn dark and found their way to whatever communication channel was available — a letter to a guild contact, a message through the monitoring network that Hael’s team was still dismantling, a between-walker who lived nearby who received their neighbor’s confused and urgent question and relayed it through the threading.

And from further.

Wren’s threading had connected four cities formally.

The combined signal had traveled through every connected node in the kingdom.

The responses were coming from cities Wren hadn’t threaded yet. Cities that had no formal contact with the network. Cities where the between-walkers had felt the signal and had no channel to respond through and were finding improvised ones.

Kael was awake at four in the morning reading the response data that Nara was translating through the Framework Memory’s bidirectional channel when his mother came downstairs.

She looked at the table covered in translated responses.

She looked at Kael.

"How many," she said.

"Still counting," he said.

She made tea.

By six in the morning the count was at forty-seven cities.

Not twelve. Forty-seven.

Cities that had received the combined signal and produced a response before dawn.

Nara was sitting with her eyes closed, the Framework Memory running at full sensitivity, the bidirectional channel processing responses faster than she could translate them individually. She had shifted to a batch processing mode — the ability developing a new efficiency under sustained high-volume use, the Rank 2 capacity finding its fuller expression.

Oren was on the roof.

Not meditating — receiving. The Cost Sense running at full sensitivity, the present-tense cost data from forty-seven cities arriving through the combined signal’s resonance, the ability processing the aggregate data of what the naming had done to the sensation.

Kael went up at six thirty.

Oren was standing at the roof edge looking north. The between-frequency quality of them running at a different register than yesterday — not louder, more organized. The nineteen years of pressure finding channels.

"The sensation," Kael said.

"Changed," Oren said. "After the signal — the present-tense cost in the cities that received it is — different." They paused. "The cost is the same. The suppression is still running. The monitoring networks are still active. The advancement dampening is still costing people what it cost them yesterday." They paused. "But the quality of the cost has changed."

"How," he said.

"Before the signal — the cost was ambient. Unconscious. People were paying it without knowing they were paying it." They paused. "After the signal — they know. They know what the cost is and that it’s being paid and that it was put there." They looked at Kael. "Conscious cost is different from unconscious cost. Knowing you’re paying something changes the paying." Another pause. "The sensation in those forty-seven cities this morning is people paying a conscious cost. Feeling the weight now that they know its name." They paused. "It’s louder in one sense. More specific." They met his eyes. "But it’s also different in quality. A conscious cost can be — contested. Refused. Addressed. An unconscious cost just continues."

"The naming created agency," Kael said.

"Yes," Oren said. "That’s the honest shape of the ability. The evidence I build — it’s not just showing the cost. It’s converting unconscious cost into conscious cost. Making the paying visible so it can be refused."

Kael thought about this.

About what two point four million people who now knew the name of what they’d been carrying would do with that knowledge.

About the Church’s response to the Veil falling — the global notification arriving in sleeping minds and the morning after being loud and confused and alive with people checking displays they’d stopped checking because the ceiling had always been there.

The combined signal had done something analogous but different. Not a System notification — something more personal. Not a number changing. A weight named.

"The responses from forty-seven cities," he said. "What are they asking?"

"Two categories," Nara said from the doorway. She had come upstairs without him hearing — the Framework Memory’s processing apparently freeing enough attention for her to move and listen simultaneously. "Between-walkers asking how to find us. The same question Wren asked. How far the network extends. Whether there are others." She paused. "And ordinary people asking a different question."

"What question," he said.

"They’re asking if what they felt was real," she said. "Whether the cost they’ve been paying is actually what they felt named last night. Whether it was put there deliberately or whether it’s natural." She paused. "They’re asking because they’ve been told their whole lives that the Level hierarchy is natural. The Church’s version of the System. The Awakening ceremony. The multipliers." She paused. "And last night something reached through the node network and named what the cost of that hierarchy feels like from inside it. From the bottom." She met his eyes. "They want to know if that naming was true."

"It was true," he said.

"I know," she said. "You know. Oren knows." She paused. "How do we tell two point four million people?"

He thought about the school.

About Calla standing at the front of a half-finished room saying what you have is not wrong.

About the specific power of being told a truth you already knew but hadn’t had permission to know.

About the Framework Inscription carrying guidance through the node network — persistent, reaching anyone who passed through the range.

"The combined signal," he said. "Can we run it again. Not just once. Regularly."

Nara thought about it. "The ability sustains as long as we sustain it. Last night was thirty minutes. The signal propagated and then we released it." She paused. "If we ran it longer — an hour, two hours — the propagation would be deeper. More people would receive it." She paused. "And if we embedded Framework Inscription content simultaneously — the naming, the evidence, the historical context — not just the sensation but the understanding — "

"The truth in a form people can receive," Oren said.

"Yes," Nara said. "The combined signal creates receptivity. The Framework Inscription provides content." She paused. "Together — the signal reaches, creates the receptivity, and the Inscription delivers the understanding into that receptive state."

Kael thought about what his mother had said.

People who have been lied to for thirty-one years don’t stay away from the truth once they know where it is.

They just needed a night to get there.

The combined signal had given two point four million people a night.

The Framework Inscription could give them where the truth was.

"Tonight," he said. "We run it again. Longer. With the Inscription embedded." He looked at Nara. "What content do we embed?"

She thought about it.

"The oversight board’s formal documentation," she said. "The evidence of what the suppression costs. The advancement credit mechanism — that the System kept what was taken and it can be asked for back." She paused. "Not abstract truth. Actionable truth. Not just the cost is real but the cost is documented and here is what you can do about it."

"Aldren’s school," Oren said.

They both looked at them.

"The school trains people to build infrastructure in their own cities," Oren said. "If forty-seven cities respond to one night’s signal — and the signal reaches more people tonight with the Inscription embedded — the school is going to need graduates from forty-seven cities. Not eleven students in one class." They paused. "We need to think about scale."

He looked at the Domain.

At the school in the half-finished building.

At the oversight board meeting upstairs.

At Calder’s translated pre-System texts and Sera’s notebooks and Hael’s retroactive review and Wren threading forty-seven cities simultaneously since dawn.

At the network that had been building for six weeks and had produced something that reached two point four million people in one night.

"The school needs to be bigger," he said.

"Yes," Nara said.

She was downstairs. He could feel through the Domain — the school’s first class in its second week of sessions, Calla at the front of the room, the eleven students who had become twelve when Tarris joined formally and thirteen when Pela had sat down in the back of a session on advancement credit mechanics and started contributing so specifically and accurately that Calla had simply handed her the session plan and sat down herself.

Fourteen students in a school that had been planned for twenty and built for thirty and was going to need to accommodate whatever came from forty-seven cities.

He went downstairs.

Calla was at the door of the school room, apparently having felt his approach through the between-frequency that everyone in the building was developing simply from living in a Domain with three Death’s Chosen and a Sovereign Lich and a Level 68 Grave Sovereign.

"Forty-seven cities," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"The school needs to be bigger," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"The second floor," she said. "The construction — it’s been one crew, working at building pace. If we bring in three more crews and run through the weekend — " she paused. "Two weeks."

"Do it," he said.

"The curriculum," she said. "Eleven students I can teach personally. Forty-seven cities sending students — I need teachers. The current class — some of them are ready to teach what they know." She paused. "Pela has been teaching the advancement credit mechanics session better than I would have. Tarris has been running the recognition sessions — how to identify monitoring suppression in the people around you." She paused. "They’re students and teachers simultaneously."

"Let them be both," he said.

"The infrastructure training program," she said. "The module where graduates learn to build the oversight board model in their own city. It’s been theoretical — we haven’t had graduates yet." She paused. "If forty-seven cities are responding tonight and we embed the Inscription with actionable information — " she paused. "The first graduates who go home won’t be going home to nothing. They’ll be going home to cities where people already know something happened last night and are asking questions." She met his eyes. "The timing is — "

"Right," he said. "The signal created the receptivity. The graduates will carry the infrastructure into cities that are already asking the questions." He paused. "When does the first class graduate?"

"Three weeks," she said.

"Can it be two," he said.

She thought about it.

"One week if we run double sessions and the students are willing," she said. "They’re all motivated. They know what two point four million people felt last night. They know what the graduates going back to their cities means." She paused. "Ask them."

He went to the school room door.

Fourteen students looked up.

He looked at them.

At Bex the Tide Walker from the coastal city. At Corr the Stone Reader. At Sable who had run for nine months and was not running anymore. At Tarris who had stopped studying ceilings and started studying faces. At Pela who had organized the documentation and discovered she was better at teaching it than receiving it.

At nine others from nine cities with nine different suppressions and nine different trees from the same kind of seeds.

"Forty-seven cities responded to last night’s signal before dawn," he said. "Tonight we run the combined signal again. Longer. With the Framework Inscription embedded. Actionable information — the oversight board model, the advancement credit mechanism, the school." He paused. "When you go home — and you will go home, that’s the fourth lesson — you’ll be going home to cities where people already know something changed last night and are asking what to do about it." He paused. "Are you ready to go home sooner than planned?"

The room was quiet for a moment.

Then Sable said: "I’ve been ready to go home since I got here."

The room moved.

Not dramatically — fourteen people deciding simultaneously with the focused energy of people who had been waiting for exactly this permission. Notebooks opened. Plans began. The specific productive quality of people who understood what the work was and were ready to do it.

His System pulsed.

He looked at the school room.

At fourteen students becoming the first graduates of Aldren’s school.

At the work that had been building since the altar cracked.

At forty-seven cities waiting.

At two point four million people who knew the name of what they’d been carrying.

At nine hundred and forty-one Chapters remaining.

He went to find Sera.

She was writing.

Of course she was.

"The first graduates," he said. "Their names."

She looked up.

"For the record," he said.

She opened a new page.
