Oren didn’t announce it at a session.

He sent a message to the network at dawn.

The network received it over the following hours as the threading and the correspondence chains carried it to the correction workers in their territories and the school graduates in their communities and the coal keepers in their practices.

The responses came back over two days.

Most of them were short.

Wren: The threads are running at a quality I have never felt before in thirty-seven years and four months of threading.

His mother: The queue was empty this morning.

The present record of what the between-space is communicating to the communities in its presence now." She paused. "The node architecture developed in the absence to record what was absent is now — learning to record what is present." She paused. "The System adapting to the return." She paused. "Recording the deep correspondence as it runs." She paused. "The honest System finding its function in the presence."

Still useful.

His mother’s phrase. Running through everything.

He looked at the Ashrow.

At the Domain.

At the work.

At the ordinary Thursday morning with the soup ready and the oversight board on Tuesday and the coal burning and the between-space present.

At the design working through honest choice.

At the chain.

At home.

He thought about the blank multiplier.

About what the blank was at three.

About the System’s approximation of the healing function present in the between-space that was now running in its own character.

He had been watching the gutters run less grey since the beginning.

This was the first morning they ran clear.

Not because someone had cleaned them.

Because the honest presence was the dominant quality of the world at three and the honest presence ran through what it was present in and the gutters ran in the honest presence and what ran through them was the between-space’s quality.

The gutters ran clear.

He stood on the roof and looked at the Ashrow and felt three and felt the gutters running clear and thought about his father saying the System’s hand was on his shoulder and staying anyway because of the warmth.

The warmth had been the sealed wellspring pressing through the sealed door.

His father had felt it.

Had stayed for it.

The warmth was now the between-space present.

Not pressing through a door.

Running.

Clear.

His System pulsed.

Not because they were the most difficult work he had done — the Drevenmoor extraction had been harder, the Venmoor institutional negotiation had been more complex, the wellspring had required the specific function that nothing before had required.

They took four months because four months was the pace at which the work could be done honestly.

The two northern territories: remote, the correction work requiring sustained presence because the terrain meant the school’s graduates couldn’t easily reach them and the correction workers in the network hadn’t yet extended that far. He went north with Oren in the second month. The territories were what he expected — the wound present, the between-space thin, the root networks dense with the specific character of places that had been in the full absence longer than their geography suggested.
