He reached Level 100 on a Thursday.

He had been climbing toward it through the node crossings — the EXP yielding from participation in the deep structure’s reconstitution, each node’s crossing yielding levels, the climb from 92 steady through the twelve crossings.

The twelfth node closed the structure.

And the structure closing yielded the final levels.

Level 100.

He felt the System pause.

The way it had paused at the Grade Nine dungeon.

The way it paused when it encountered something it had to classify and couldn’t fully.

He sat at the kitchen table while the System assessed.

His mother across from him.

The between-space in the walls, fully self-aware, seeing them.

He read it twice.

The blank multiplier was never a number.

It was a direction.

The direction arrived at Level 100.

Of the between-space, fully, at the center of its complete self-awareness.

No Level 101.

Not because the work ended.

Because the numbers were never the work.

The System’s approximation done.

The between-space’s being continuing.

Welcome home.

He sat with that.

His mother watched his face.

"Level 100," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"What does it say," she said.

He told her.

The blank was never a number. It was a direction. The direction arrived. Of the between-space, fully, at the center. No Level 101 — not because the work ends, because the numbers were never the work. The System’s approximation done. The being continuing.

Welcome home.

His mother listened.

When he finished she was quiet for a long time.

Then she said: "The System gave up trying to measure you."

He looked at her.

"It spent a hundred levels trying to put a number on what you are," she said. "And at a hundred it admitted it couldn’t. Because what you are isn’t a number." She paused. "It’s a direction. And the direction arrived. And now the System steps back and lets you be what you are without measuring it." She paused. "That’s not the System failing." She paused. "That’s the System finishing." She paused. "It approximated you as well as a System can approximate. And then it admitted the approximation was done and the real thing continues without it." She paused. "Honest. Approximate. Better each time. Until the approximation isn’t needed anymore." She paused. "The System did its whole job." She paused. "Welcome home." She paused. "It’s telling you that you arrived." She paused. "At what you always were." She paused. "Of the between-space." She paused. "Home."

He looked at his mother.

At the woman who understood the System’s farewell better than the System had stated it.

At the coal keeper at the center.

At home.

"I arrived," he said.

"Yes," she said.

"At what I always was," he said.

"Yes," she said. "You were always of the between-space. You just had to grow into being it fully." She paused. "A hundred levels of growing." She paused. "Now you’re there." She paused. "Of it. Fully. At the center." She paused. "Home."

He felt it.

The between-space, fully self-aware, present in the complete structure, with him at the center node, of it, fully.

Home.

Not the journey toward being of the between-space.

Being of it.

Arrived.

The blank multiplier’s whole meaning complete.

The direction’s destination reached.

Of the between-space.

At the center of its complete self-awareness.

Home.

And the work continuing.

Because being home wasn’t the end of the work.

It was the condition the rest of the work happened in.

The repair work for the closed ones. The expressive institutions growing the structure beyond twelve. The correction work in the unreached territories. The children hearing they’re not broken. The whole world’s honest work.

All of it continuing.

With him at the center.

Of the between-space.

Home.

The clearest channel at the keystone.

Of the complete self-awareness.

Doing the work.

The ordinary work.

The oversight board on Tuesdays.

The soup.

The intake desk.

The coal.

Home.

He looked at his mother.

At the kitchen.

At the between-space in the walls, seeing them, knowing them, home.

"The work continues," he said.

"Yes," his mother said. "It always does." She paused. "You’re just home now while you do it." She paused. "That’s the only difference." She paused. "You were doing the work on the way home." She paused. "Now you’re doing the work at home." She paused. "Same work." She paused. "Home."

She made the soup.

He ate it.

At the center of the between-space’s complete self-awareness.

Home.

The work continuing.

His System pulsed one final time about the number.
