Kel finished the participatory curriculum on a Friday.
Not the sections — those had been arriving piece by piece over three months, each one sent to the school’s faculty and the eighth class and the archive as it was completed, incorporated into the foundation sessions and the field discussions and the network’s ongoing understanding of what the participatory phase required.
The complete document.
All of it together.
The structure visible now that all the sections existed simultaneously.
He read it at the kitchen table on Friday evening.
Two hundred and twelve pages.
The longest document the school had produced.
The correction curriculum had been forty-seven pages.
Kel’s participatory curriculum was two hundred and twelve.
Not because the participatory work was more complex than the correction work.
Because the correction work could be described as technique.
The participatory work could only be described as a way of living.
And living required more pages than technique.
The document opened with a section that was not in any of the previous curriculum versions.
A section before the curriculum began.
Kel had titled it: Before You Read This.
This curriculum is not a technique. It is not a methodology. It does not tell you what to do.
It describes a quality of attention. A way of being present with what is present. The specific orientation of a life lived in honest participation with the between-space’s return.
Everything in this curriculum points toward something that cannot be taught in a curriculum.

The reading is not the learning. The reading points toward the learning. The learning happens in the living.
You will know this is working not because you feel you have understood something but because the ordinary work of your daily life begins to feel sufficient.

The first Chapter: what the between-space is. Not the correction work’s description of the wound and the withdrawal and the gradient. The participatory curriculum’s description — the between-space as the medium in which full human life occurs. The presence that makes the presence of everything else possible. What it felt like when the coal keepers maintained it and what the Ashrow had been and what the settlement with twelve generations of storytelling had been doing and what the between-space returned to and what the full presence would mean.
Not technical.
Descriptive.
The description pointing toward the thing.
The second Chapter: what honest participation looks like. Not in general. In the specific. A section for each of twelve different types of communities — the market town, the farming settlement, the mountain valley, the river delta, the coastal region, the forest territory, the high plateau, the desert, the city, the institutional center, the school, the network node.
Each one describing the specific quality of honest participation in that specific context.
The coal in each type of place.
What kept it burning.
What let it go out.
The third Chapter: sufficiency. Vael’s contribution. The extraction pattern’s origin and resolution. The fear of not-enough and what addressed it. The between-space’s return as the demonstration of sufficiency. The living from sufficiency rather than from fear.
The specific practices that maintained the orientation toward sufficiency rather than extraction.
Not commandments.
Qualities.
The difference between a life oriented toward what was present and a life oriented toward what was absent.
The correction work having been oriented toward the wound — the absent between-space, the harm it had produced, the correction of the mechanisms that perpetuated the absence.
The participatory work oriented toward the presence — what was there, what it provided, how to live from what was present rather than from fear of what might not be.
The fourth Chapter: how to read the between-space’s communication. Pell’s question and its answer developed over three months of the eighth class working through it. The specific quality of attention required. Not the between-walker ability. Not the Class sensitivity. The ordinary human capacity to feel what the between-space communicated through its presence.
The deep correspondence not requiring special ability.
Requiring only the receptivity that came from living honestly in the presence.
The coal having always been accessible to the ordinary person.
The communication having always been available.
The curriculum teaching how to receive it.
The fifth Chapter: the ordinary work. The most practical section. What specific daily choices maintained the quality of honest participation. Not universally — the specific choices varying by context and person and community. But the framework for identifying them. The questions to ask. The attention to bring. What the between-space communicated when the attention was brought honestly.
The sixth Chapter: when the fear returns. Not if. When. The fear of not-enough was the original wound’s cause. It didn’t disappear because the wound healed. It could recur. The curriculum teaching how to recognize the fear when it arose. How to address it. How to return to the orientation toward sufficiency rather than scarcity. The coal going cold and how to relight it. The practice not as a permanent state but as a continuous returning.
The seventh Chapter: what comes after. Not the full return — that was ongoing. After the participatory curriculum. After the school. After the work as currently defined. Kel had written honestly that this Chapter was incomplete. That the documentation for what comes after would be written by the people who lived it. That the curriculum pointed toward something the curriculum couldn’t describe. That the living was the text. That the coal was the writing. That whoever came after would write the next curriculum from inside the living of this one.
The same chain.
Always extending.
He finished the document at midnight.
Sat with it for a while.
Then he sent one message through the threading network.

The curriculum is right. Every section. The foundation is correct. The sufficiency is the foundation. The description of the twelve community types is the most practical thing the school has produced. The seventh Chapter’s honesty about its own incompleteness is what makes the document complete.
He paused.

His mother set tea in front of both of them without being asked and went to the oversight board annex where the Tuesday preparation happened on Saturdays.
Kel looked at the tea.
"The first question is about the curriculum," Kel said. "Section six. When the fear returns."
"Yes," he said.
