Evelyn stood frozen, phone pressed against her ear, as Damien’s words settled in.

"Dead?" Her voice trembled, the weight of disbelief pressing on her chest. "Are you sure?"

There was a beat of silence on the other end before Damien sighed, the sound heavy with exhaustion. "I’m sure."

A sinking feeling gripped her, regret gnawing at her insides. If she had talked to Mathew yesterday, maybe things would have turned out differently. Maybe they could have prevented the accident, saved lives, and even found the crucial pieces to the puzzle that had become her life. Now it all felt like slipping sand, out of her control.

"Do you want to come see it for yourself?" Damien asked softly, breaking through her thoughts. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

Evelyn hesitated for a moment. It was already late, and exhaustion was setting in, but there was no way she could just go back to bed now. "Yes," she finally answered, her voice barely above a whisper. "I’ll be there soon."

With a sigh, she put the phone down and walked back to the room. Her eyes fell on Zevian, sleeping peacefully. He had been through hell the past few days—managing his empire, running back and forth to the hospital, taking care of Natalie. He needed rest, and the last thing she wanted was to disturb him.

Silently, she grabbed a coat from the wardrobe and slipped it on, making sure not to wake him or Natalie as she crept out of the room. Once outside, she dialed Avery’s number.

"Evelyn?" Avery’s voice was sleepy but quickly turned alert when she heard Evelyn’s tone.

"They found them!" Evelyn said, her voice steady but carrying an underlying tension. "Come to the location I forwarded. It’s... it’s bad."

Avery didn’t ask for details and nodded. "I’ll be there soon."

As soon as she hung up, Evelyn sent the location to Avery and made her way to the run-down hospital that Damien had mentioned. It was situated by the highway, a place that seemed to echo despair even in the darkness.

Her heart thudded in her chest as she approached the entrance. Luckily Avery arrived just a minute later. And holding hands, they walked inside the hospital.

Damien was already there, standing in the dimly lit lounge, his team scattered around him like silent sentinels. He nodded as she walked in, his expression grim.

Without a word, Damien gestured to his assistant, who quickly motioned for the doctor to meet them. "Take us to the postmortem room," the assistant instructed.

Evelyn swallowed hard as she followed Damien through the narrow, dimly lit hallway. As they walked, Damien began explaining in bits, his voice calm but carrying the gravity of the situation.

"They had been hiding out in a motel all week," he started, his eyes forward as they walked. "This morning, they cleared out and rented a car. My team believes they were planning to take a ship from Veleria to Darahia, through a middle agent who specializes in illegal migration between countries."

Evelyn’s brows furrowed, the pieces slowly coming together.

"But just before they crossed the Vespera border," Damien continued, his voice dropping slightly, "a truck crashed into them. Reema was killed on impact, and Mariam died after she reached the hospital."

Evelyn’s throat tightened. The words hung heavy in the air as they reached the postmortem room door. The doctor stood in front of them, masks in hand, and silently handed them out before pushing the door open.

The room was cold and eerily quiet. Empty metal tables were scattered across the floor, their surfaces stained from long-forgotten uses. At the far end of the room, two bodies lay covered in white sheets.

Evelyn’s heart raced as she approached the first body. Avery, walking beside her, clutched Damien’s shirt, her face turning pale.

Damien shot her a look, his tone dry. "If you can’t handle this, wait outside."

Avery scowled at him, her voice tight. "I’m fine."

The tension between them was almost comical, if not for the grim scene before them. Avery stepped back, taking deep breaths, while Evelyn moved forward, her stomach knotting in dread.

The doctor pulled back the sheet covering the first body. The cold, lifeless face of Reema appeared, her features marred by scratches and bruises. Her skin was tightly wrapped like a mummy, her once-vibrant life reduced to this hollow shell.

Avery gasped and turned away, covering her mouth with a trembling hand. "Oh my god..."

Evelyn’s chest tightened as the doctor explained, "The truck hit her side directly. Her brain was severely damaged on impact. She died before we could even attempt to treat her."

Without waiting for a response, the doctor moved to the second body. Evelyn stepped closer, her heart pounding in her ears. The sheet lifted, revealing Mariam’s wrinkled face, pale and bloodied, covered in bandages. She had been older, fragile, and the accident had clearly taken its toll. Her face looked peaceful, despite the injuries, as if death had been a release.

Avery made a choking sound from behind them. "I can’t... I need to get out." She spun around, hurrying towards the door.

Damien watched her leave, shaking his head slightly. "Pathetic."

But Evelyn barely registered his comment, her mind too preoccupied with the overwhelming reality in front of her. Just yesterday, she had thought they were finally going to get some answers. And now... both women were dead.

Evelyn turned to the doctor. "Did Mariam say anything before she died? In the ambulance, maybe?"

The doctor hesitated for a moment, clearly trying to recall something. Then he nodded. "Yes... the paramedic mentioned she kept asking to be taken to ’Madam Gracia.’ She said that name over and over, right until her last breath."

Evelyn exchanged a glance with Damien, confusion evident in their eyes.

"Madam Gracia?" Evelyn repeated, trying to make sense of the name. "Was she asking to see her in the afterlife?"

"Perhaps," Damien muttered. "Or maybe... there’s more to this."

His assistant stepped forward, thanking the doctor, and led them out of the postmortem room. As they stepped outside into the cool night air, Avery joined them, her face still pale but composed.

"It’s so unfortunate they died like this," Avery murmured with a sigh. "Just when we were getting close."

But Damien stopped short, his eyes dark with thought. "Unfortunate... but planned."

Evelyn and Avery both turned to him in shock. "What do you mean, planned?"

Without a word, Damien gestured for his assistant, who pulled out his phone and passed it to Damien, a video already playing on the screen.

"The car’s dashcam was conveniently destroyed," Damien explained, "but my team managed to find nearby CCTV footage. It’s grainy and far, but you can see enough."

Evelyn and Avery leaned in to watch. The video played in slow motion, showing a distant junction where a large truck was parked. Several cars passed by, but the truck didn’t move. Then, when an older car approached—the one Reema and Mariam were in—the truck suddenly revved its engine and charged forward at full speed, smashing into the smaller vehicle.

Avery clenched her fists. "Which bastard did this?"

The video continued to show the truck relentlessly crashing into the car, again and again, until it flipped over, metal screeching as it flew off the road. Evelyn’s mind raced as she watched, her head spinning with questions. Who could have wanted them dead so badly?

Damien handed the phone back to his assistant, his jaw clenched. "It’s someone who doesn’t want us to find out if Gracia is alive. Didn’t you notice how Reema panicked when Mariam mentioned her that day? I could have made her talk if you hadn’t stopped me," he grumbled, shooting Avery a glare.

Avery glared back, rolling her eyes. "Oh, please. Like it would have made a difference."

"But who could want us not to find Gracia?" Damien’s assistant wondered aloud, breaking the silence that had settled between them.

The name "Mrs. Wright" echoed in Evelyn’s mind, a sharp pang of realization hitting her. She turned to Damien just as he spoke, their voices overlapping.
