- Chapter 1: Descent Of The Origin
The minds of all six agents reeled from the tumultuous waves of will slamming through their consciousness.
Captain Carl hissed in apprehension. He didn’t know what was worse — the fact that there could be a human wielding such power, or the fact that there was a beast that pushed him to this state.
He glanced back at his subordinates. They seemed out of it, mirroring the doll-like expression of Tevin.
He frowned. Why was he the only one conscious?
’Is it that my will is stronger, so I can resist the lack of autonomy?’ he realized.
Not wasting time, he dragged his men out one after the other.
All five soldiers woke one after the other, their faces painted with horror.
Tevin, still trembling, had a terrified expression on his face as he cocked his gun, aiming at the unconscious body of the teenager. His trembling fingers rested on the trigger.
A silhouette obstructed him before he could fire. "Are you crazy? You want to kill a child!" Carl yelled, his expression furious.
Tevin staggered a few steps back in fear, but he gritted his teeth, his expression turning savage. "That thing isn’t human! It’s a monster — one we have no defense against. We kill it before it wakes, while it’s vulnerable. If not, we’ll be the ones on the receiving end once it wakes up!"
Captain Carl’s expression grew darker. "Are you stupid?! This is a high-level asset of humanity! And with the current reality, it is inevitable others will reach such a level of power. What do we do then, by your logic? Kill them?
If you get stronger, breaking out of the Shackled realm, how would you like to wake up with a gun to your head?"
Tevin staggered backward more, his pupils quivering as he muttered incoherently, "That’s a monster... a monster, I tell you... a monster."
Captain Carl shook his head. "Yes, he is a monster. But who said monsters can’t be human? Such a level of power is naturally a good thing for humanity."
Just then, the radio in his tactical helmet cracked. "Captain, we have already landed!"
Captain Carl used the opportunity. "Good. Then relay orders: the area has been determined non-hostile. The support units are to make a landing. There are casualties that need urgent medical care. We are setting up camp here!"
The radio cracked in reply. "Orders received."
Captain Carl sighed, turning his gaze back to Tevin, who was on his knees clutching his head, eyes bloodshot, muttering incessantly under his breath, almost delirious.
Carl knew what was happening. Humans reacted to reality differently.
Especially now, with this apocalypse. Before such power, some reacted with fear and apprehension, some with awe.
But there were always a weak few who couldn’t handle reality. Their fight-or-flight mode crumbled, leaving their minds broken.
And as captain, he couldn’t allow such an unstable agent to threaten their mission. This was bigger than just him.
No — in fact, this mission was bigger than just their country. This was for humanity!
Everyone was foremost human before being a person.
He drew the pistol holstered at his hip, pointing it to the agent’s head. "Farewell, soldier."
The other four saluted solemnly. No one could dispute what was about to occur. Their mission came before their opinions. If there was even a whiff of threat, they eliminated it — simple as that.
Bang!
The sound of the gunshot rang out. Blood splattered as Agent Tevin’s expression at the last moment seemed to loosen with relief. Freed from the burden of living such a life, he crumpled to the ground, blood pooling beneath him.
Captain Carl sighed, placing his smoking gun back in its holster.
He knelt, his hands reaching to close Tevin’s wide-open eyes. "Rest well, soldier."
With that, he got to his feet and ordered, "The rest of you, go assemble the other children so they can receive care the moment the support unit lands. Since I’m not as affected, I will bring this one in myself."
Saluting, the four left to carry out his orders.
The captain, left alone, turned back to gaze at Seth’s uncontrollable figure. As much as he was filled with apprehension, he was also filled with gratitude.
If Seth hadn’t slain whatever lurked in the heart of this corruption zone, their squad would have had no chance.
They would have met their ends right here.
Once more, he activated his intercom. "Send an emergency signal to HQ. We need more men."
His radio cracked. "Orders received."
Who knew how many more corruption zones out there had as powerful — or even more powerful — abominations lurking within?
He and his team had to get stronger, drastically so. But he was confused about how to do so.
He and the majority of his team had maxed out their stats. Such a level of power still eluded them.
’Could it be that this child has broken through?’
He frowned as he felt the aura the child gave off. He was sure this was a Shackled Rank aura. So how had he gotten so powerful?
’Could it have to do with his gene lineage and a gene skill? He probably has a high-grade gene skill,’ the captain concluded.
He got closer to Seth, crossing the invisible threshold. He felt the overbearing will ram against his mind, causing a mild headache, but he resisted nonetheless.
He carried Seth and began to walk away. Fortunately, the will didn’t seem attached to Seth’s body. Treating him wouldn’t be a problem then.
---
Hours passed, and it was high noon...
The supply unit had arrived and began proceeding with medical emergency treatments for the teenagers.
Due to the fact that most medical support agents had healing-class gene skills, it was much easier to treat them.
The only process left was identification.
The biometric data storage device was brought, and quickly they were already getting names.
The finger of an unconscious but now stable teen was placed on the device as it scanned. The soldier in charge began to read out the display.
"Brandon Banton, son of the current Minister of Resource Allocation, Bradford Banton. Priority asset!"
Captain Carl’s expression remained placid as he nodded. "Next."
"Elaine Griffith, daughter of the Griffith family in charge of the Saint Louis District Safe Zone. Priority asset!"
"Next."
"Uriel Mormont, last-born son of the Mormonts, current holders of the Olympus Safe Zone. Priority target."
Hearing this name, Captain Carl’s expression was visibly moved. His wife was a Mormont by blood, and she, along with his two children, was currently residing in the Olympus Safe Zone.
So Uriel was actually his nephew-in-law, in a sense.
"Next."
"Jack Bane, son of current Supreme General Jared Bane. Priority asset!"
Captain Carl blinked in surprise. The son of the current Supreme General?
There were only two Supreme Generals currently alive, and the very one who put together this squad was indeed Jared Bane.
"Next."
The agent finally reached Seth and placed his finger on the pad... but there was nothing.
"Um, sir, no details present," the agent relayed.
The biometric pad only carried information on priority targets. If Seth’s name wasn’t on the list, the higher-ups hadnever deemed him important enough to slot in his name.
Captain Carl massaged his forehead as he muttered, "This is a problem."
