Special Agent Carl Danes, captain of the newly formed special ops squad called the Cleaners, stared at the sight before him in awe.

He was part of a new breed of soldiers put together by what was left of the government and the military.

These teams of soldiers were dubbed Evolvers.

Their goals were simple: rescue citizens across the nation, bringing them into safe zones that were corruption-free.

After gaining a semblance of stability, this became the first priority of the government and military.

But while they indeed saved more people, they realized they needed more space, more land, and more resources — something the corruption zones prevented.

Thus, the special ops squad of a 100-man team, consisting of people with the strongest stats and skills, was created.

Their mission: clear as many corruption zones as possible before too many reached a perfect completion rate.

Massive resources were invested into this operation — military-grade stealth choppers, high-grade guns, tacticals, explosives, and a ridiculous amount of ammo to ensure supply.

In fact, along with the 100-man team, there were 80 more people as support units: 17 weapon engineers, 13 highly valued scientists, and the rest medical support.

The team’s starting point was selected: a corruption zone spanning a city and growing. Its heart was coincidentally located at a high-order level asset training facility called Avalon Academy.

The order from superiors was clear: get there as soon as possible and save all that could be saved.

A priority list had been received. Anything could happen to others, but the children listed on that page — if alive — had to be kept alive regardless of the cost.

The Cleaners set out immediately for their first operation, and though they arrived quickly...

When they arrived, they all got the same flashing prompt accompanied by the waning of corrupted essence in the atmosphere.

Everyone blinked, stunned. Succeeded so soon?

They had just arrived at the target location...

Regardless, they followed protocol. As the vanguard team, they also held the duty of scouting, hence why their three choppers arrived first.

Without hesitation, five agents strapped themselves to the lowering cords and slid down.

The rest stared at each other in shock and anticipation for answers.

"Captain, you have to see this!" A voice cracked from the speaker in Captain Carl’s tactical helmet.

Carl didn’t waste time strapping himself to the lowering cable as he slid down to the ground while the choppers began to descend.

Sliding down from above, Captain Carl scanned the terrain. His eyes flickered in horror at what lay below.

A chaotic mess of terrain, the entire constructs reduced to rubble. The area bore more resemblance to the Grand Canyon than a civilized school environment.

Carl Danes was a graduate of Avalon. He knew what his school once looked like. In fact, that was one of the major factors that facilitated his role as captain of this team.

But now, seeing the unrecognizable terrain below, his heart shuddered. The more he stared, the more he thought:

’It looks like the aftermath of an epic battle fought.’

The system prompt made him even more certain.

And the conclusion sent shivers down his spine. Could such a level of damage ever be outputted by flesh and blood?

His feet made contact with the earth. He unfastened himself quickly and marched forward to where his lieutenants gathered, observing something.

They made way for him, saluting.

"Are there any survivors?" Captain Danes requested.

Lieutenant Drew hesitated, glancing at something in the distance before replying, "W-we are not sure, sir!"

Captain Carl turned his gaze to where his subordinates stared — and he saw it.

Cold frames of gaunt, half-naked, disheveled teenagers strewn across the distance.

He frowned. "What are you waiting for? Go confirm their status now!" he ordered sternly.

The five didn’t hesitate, rushing toward the bodies.

One squatted before a female figure, pushing his rifle aside. He pulled out his gloves, reaching to feel her pulse.

"I got a pulse here! But it’s weak!" he relayed loudly.

"Same here!" another called.

"Same."

"Same."

Hearing the feedback, Carl nodded, feeling a wave of relief wash over him.

He couldn’t imagine reporting to the higher-ups that they met nothing but casualties.

At least now they would have something to show — proof they did their best.

Then he frowned in realization. Only four men had called back.

He reached for the intercom holstered to his side and spoke into it. "Tevin, I haven’t heard from you."

But all he got back was radio silence.

His heartbeat raced as a seed of foreboding bloomed in his gut.

Instinctively, he reached for his assault rifle and signaled the rest of his subordinates to cover him as he scaled the terrain to search for Tevin.

Due to the uneven displacement of the earth around them, though Tevin hadn’t gone far in search of the last figure he said he saw, they still couldn’t see him.

Very quickly, they arrived. What they saw confused them.

Tevin just stood blankly over a corpse, lying peacefully before a bottomless ravine that stretched as far as the eyes could see.

They were stunned. According to logic, this ravine had to be caused by the unconscious child — but how?

Their mouths gaped in awe, their eyes reflecting clashing emotions of horror.

If a human could do this... could they be considered human anymore?

The captain was first to recover. "Tevin! Why didn’t you respond to my transmission?"

He requested once more, but Tevin remained still, his expression almost doll-like.

Captain Carl frowned, signaling the others to raise their guards. They clutched their weapons tighter as they moved forward.

Still not noticing any hostiles, Captain Carl frowned. Something was wrong.

But he noticed too late. They crossed the invisible line.

Boom!

An explosion raged in their minds. A terrifying wave of force came over them. Their hair stood on end, sweat dropped from their helmets.

A shiver ran down their spines as flashes of a battle long past surged in their minds.

A savage will to live, a crazed will to kill, clashed and blended into one.

The overbearing residue of those wills in the air proliferated into their minds.

As the shadows of both opponents loomed over them.

The battle might have ended, but the warring of their wills hadn’t.

But there was clearly a winner even still — a savage will reflecting the image of the crazed teen feasting on the will of his dead foe.

The sweat-drenched Captain Carl shuddered in horror, his gaze craning down to look at the peacefully sleeping child...

No. This wasn’t a child.

He was a monster.
