- Chapter 1: Descent Of The Origin
A slow hum of an electric device stirring to life filled the air.
Everyone stared in awe as the metallic structure slowly pulled on the essence in the air, converting it into pure electrical power.
Lights across the device snapped on, and slowly the crystalline apparatus sitting at the head of the device spat out a radiant beam into the distance.
Everyone blinked as the beacon slowly died down, as though it had finished its job.
"That’s all?" Brandon asked in doubt as he walked over to examine the 1.4-meter-tall device.
Meanwhile, Seth stared at the area where the beam vanished, and he could sense it.
Something about the space there had shifted — it seemed his spatial affinity was kicking in.
"I think it worked," he said as he slowly walked into the distance.
Everyone stared at his back, and right before their eyes, upon reaching a certain point, Seth vanished.
"I see... the visible part of the spatial distortion must be on the other end. It might not look like it, but there’s a hole in the space before us," Uriel quickly analyzed.
Everyone’s eyes lit up — that was good news...
Brandon and the others didn’t waste time. Rallying the stars, everyone started to go through the illusionary portal.
The four went last... but just as Jack was about to step through, he sensed something that caused him to pause in his tracks.
His ears twitched, and he turned his head, his crimson pupils scanning through the remaining crowd.
The refugees had insisted on seeing them off, as the only form of appreciation they could offer. Hence, the place was a little crowded.
But Jack’s eyes rested on a certain figure...
Jack’s eyes narrowed. He was sure he sensed a malicious essence from this man just now.
His instincts told him something was wrong, but reality said otherwise.
The middle-aged man seemed to sense Jack’s stare, and stared back. His lips lifted into an amiable smile, and he waved at Jack as though bidding farewell.
Jack might be taciturn, but he trusted his instincts. If something was wrong, he’d do well to alert the rest.
He turned to notify his teammates, but he could only catch their backs fading into the translucent portal.
He weighed the pros and cons and decided to shrug it off and follow them.
The beacon was a one-time-use item after all. If he caused any delays and the portal closed on him, he’d be stuck here until the military arrived.
It wasn’t worth taking such a risk over something he wasn’t sure of, so he had no choice but to dismiss his doubts and walk into the portal.
He wasn’t infallible. In the end, it might just have been misjudgment. With that, the thought faded from his mind.
Glancing at Jack’s departing back, the middle-aged man finally stopped waving, his smile fading into a dark expression.
For a split moment, his eyes turned all black, as though swallowed by murky shadows.
His skin paled slightly. "That was dangerous just now... he almost sensed me."
But then his lips stretched into a revolting smile. "Maybe I should have just feasted on him. I bet his will would have tasted nice."
And with that, the man’s figure faded into the departing crowd. He was here on a mission... and he would deliver.
...
The scene shifted back to the other side of the portal...
Everyone was hit with the sudden distortion of space, time, and reality.
With minds reeling from the dissonance left after traversing through a portal, everyone slowly regained their bearings.
"Where are we?"
"You said you were taking us to the capital — where is this?"
"Ahh, my head hurts... it hurts so much. Why weren’t we warned?"
The crowd slowly started voicing complaints, turning rowdy.
Brandon pushed his way out of the cluster of the rowdy bunch, bursting out to the forefront where he saw Seth already communicating with the agents.
He let out a sigh of relief and walked up toward them.
"Here, take these. Those are detailed reports on every individual and their abilities... We’ll leave the rest to you guys."
An agent quickly collected the stack of documents that appeared in Seth’s grasp.
Brandon, on seeing this transaction complete, voiced out:
"Can we go now?"
The four agents glanced at each other, then nodded, with one volunteering to lead them out.
Giving the confused crowd one last glance, Seth and the others left...
Meanwhile, across the distance in Washington DC, particularly the White House...
The sun sat high, its luminous beams lighting the presidential office.
The president sat in formal wear, addressing seven individuals who stood before his desk.
But their conversation was immediately interrupted as his aide pushed the doors open, rushing into the office.
The aide, seeing the president was busy and who he was addressing, immediately froze up on the spot.
He swallowed and stuttered as he bowed in apology. "I-I am sorry, sir. I wasn’t aware you were busy."
President Cain frowned, evidently displeased. He waved his hand. "Well, just get on with it. You are already here anyway."
The aide froze, adjusting his glasses as he stared from the individuals to the president, as though signaling something.
The president’s eyes lit up. "Is this about Apex? Any feedback from them?"
The aide sighed as he nodded. "Sir, they are back. Apparently, they have completed the mission and have classified information they insist they must relay to you directly."
The president’s expression was one of shock. ’They completed the mission in just a day? I have to recalculate their value... they might be stronger than anticipated.’
His eyes flickered, but on hearing the other half of the aide’s report, a smile returned to his lips.
This just showed he had managed to leave enough impression on Seth and the others to make them trust him to some level.
He turned his gaze back to the seven he had been addressing...
"Pardon me, lads. We will have to finish this little meeting of ours at some other time," he amiably addressed them.
He stood up, straightened his suit, and looked up to still see the seven just standing there.
They didn’t depart like he expected. Raising a brow, he questioned, "Is there a problem?"
A female among the seven stepped forward, her red ginger hair flowing down her back.
Her face finely sculpted, her skin unblemished, and her eyes glistened with golden lights.
"Me and my team would like to take this opportunity to see Apex for ourselves. We’ve heard a lot about their feats — it would be nice to put a face to the names." Her enchanting, soothing voice rang through the room.
The aide sighed... he knew this would happen.
These seven, dubbed by the codename Alpha, were the recent heroes who had just succeeded in clearing a corruption zone. Elites with Royal grade skills, and their leader who had just stepped forward...
Was Lara Stidum, the pearl of the Stidum household, also known as one of the big three families.
Each and every one of the seven wasn’t from a mediocre background either.
Hearing about Apex, it was only natural their competitive spirits were aroused.
The president smiled wryly, feeling the competitive spirit from the bunch before him.
The truth was that these guys couldn’t even compare. Seth and the others were already Awakened — these seven couldn’t be their match.
But who was he to curb the curiosity of these youths? "Fine."
He smiled, waving for them to follow along as he stepped out. ’Besides, Trisha can read them and see their true worth.’
