- Chapter 1: Our Second Anniversary
The voice came through from the other side of the door.
"Come in!"
The door swung open and I was greeted with a smile from our receptionist. My eyes flickered down to see that she was holding onto a fruit basket.
"Someone left this for you," she explained. "Do you need anything else from me?"
I reached over to take the basket from her, muttering a "it’s alright, thank you" and watched as she walked out of the office.
I set the fruit basket down onto my desk, and saw a piece of card sticking out of the edge of the basket. Curious, I leaned in to have a closer look.
"Who sent you this?" Xavier asked with a raised brow.
"I don’t know, we shall find out soon."
I looked at the card that was in my hand. It was like a greeting card of some sort, on top of it was embossed with the words "Wishing you a speedy recovery."
My brows were knitted together, forming a frown that sat between my brows as my mind raced with thoughts. I opened the card, and my eyes landed on a familiar handwriting scribbled all over on the inside of it.
"I’m so sorry for your loss. Please accept this fruit basket as my condolences." That was what was written on the card. My eyes flickered down to see the name I hate to see.
"Stella..." her name left my lips in a hush voice, my tone laced with disdain and contempt for her. The memory of what happened in the washroom came flooding my mind. I could still see the smirk and anger written on her face as she shoved and pushed me to the ground that day.
I crushed the card up in my hand and tossed it aside. In an instant, impulse clouded my judgement and anger was pulsing through every single vein inside of my body. I tilted my head to glare at the fruit basket and before I knew it, my arms extended to push it off the table in the next second.
I watched as the basket fell over with a loud thud and the fruits rolled out, scattered all over the ground. My heart was pounding loudly against my chest, threatening to burst out at any second now.
I let out a loud scoff as my eyes were burning with a fiery blaze. "A fruit basket?" I snarled, spitting the words out like they were poison in my mouth. "Does she think she could bring my son back to life with a goddamn fruit basket?! I don’t need a gift. I want her and that ex-husband of mine to rot in hell!"
I let out a breath and my knees buckled and I almost fell over but I pressed my palms against the edge of the table and Xavier had also rushed over to hold onto me.
"Aurelia..." my name left his lips in a tone laced with concern and worry as he looked at me with his brows furrowed together.
I was still breathing heavily, my heart continued to thud loudly against my chest and I could hear it echo inside my head. "They will have to pay for what they did..." I said with gritted teeth as my eyes were narrowed into thin slits.
He placed his hand on my shoulder. "Aurelia, look at me," he said as his hand gently grabbed my chin, forcing me to look at him.
Our gazes met and emotions were running wild in my dark eyes. "Don’t worry about this, they will pay for it in due time. I will make sure of it. You have my word."
***
Time flies. Soon enough, it was my birthday.
The morning sunlight filtered in through the gaps in the curtain, lighting up the room.
I was still lying in bed when I felt him roll over and wrapped his arms around me, pulling me in closer towards his chest. I could feel the warmth of his body seeping into my skin.
"Happy birthday, my love," he woke me up with kisses on my cheek and the nape of my neck.
The corners of my lips twisted upwards into a slight smile, mumbling a soft "thank you". I reached up to hold onto his hand, bringing it to my lips to give it a kiss.
"I got something planned for your special day," he announced and I could hear the excitement in his voice as he spoke with a smile plastered across his face.
I wasn’t really in the mood to celebrate or do anything this year. My heart was still heavy from the loss of my child, my son who will never get to experience the life I imagined he would lead.
I turned around to face him this time and I looked up where our eyes met. "I’m sorry, babe but can we just stay home today? I’m not really in the mood to do anything," I admitted and I saw a look of disappointment cross his face for a split second but was quickly replaced with a slight smile on his face.
"That’s alright," he said. "But we should at least celebrate it at home. Right?" He suggested. He wasn’t going to let me stay cooped up in my room the whole day.
There was a brief pause as silence stretched between us. "You know..." his voice trailed off. "I hate to say this but the doctors are right. You need to get out of this room. It’s better for you."
I lowered my head as I let out a soft sigh. "You are right," I muttered under my breath. Then I looked up to meet his gaze once again, letting a small smile grace my lips. "So... what do you have in mind?"
He thought about it for a while and I watched as his eyes lit up when an idea popped into his head. His lips curled upwards into a playful smile. "I will be your personal chef for today. How about an Omakase and some red wine for dinner?"
The smile on my face widened as I nodded. "Sounds good. And what will we be doing now then?"
"Wanna put on your favourite movie?"
***
By the evening, Xavier was clad in a black button down shirt and pants. His sleeves were rolled up till where his elbows were and he had left the first 2 buttons of the shirt unbuttoned.
He was chopping up some garlic on the kitchen island as I sat opposite of him, watching him.
"You look hot," I commented, a smirk tugging at the corners of my lips.
A low chuckle left his lips this time. He lifted his head to meet my eyes and raised his brow at me. "I do, don’t I?"
I stood up from my seat and made my way to the other side of the kitchen island. Wrapping my arms around his torso, I leaned in to press my lips on his back. "Of course, you do," I said with a smile playing on my lips.
He had prepared an extensive table setup for my birthday dinner. The table was decorated with fresh flowers, including tulips, my favourite flowers. There were also some candles set in the middle of the table, giving off an alluring aroma that lingered in the air as we sat in the dimly lit living hall.
"Smells amazing," I commented as he set the plates of steak down. I watched as he took the wine glass and carefully filled it up with some of the most expensive red wine he owned.
"Red wine for my love."
I smiled. "Thank you, babe." I raised the wine glass in my hand, letting our glasses clink before I took a sip.
The evening went by quicker than I had imagined. I couldn’t even keep count of the number of glasses of wine we had drank that night. His cheeks were flushed red by now, and so were mine.
We found ourselves stumbling into the bedroom together and plopped down onto the bed as laughter escaped my lips. I turned to look at him, his eyes were fluttered shut and his breathing was steady.
I sat back up, wanting to head to the bathroom when he reached out to wrap his fingers around my wrist, holding me back.
"Aurelia..." my name left his lips in a low voice and I looked back at him with a smile etched onto my lips.
"What is it?"
He groaned. "There is something I have been hiding from you all this time. I don’t know how to tell you this but it’s been haunting me."
The smile on my face fell this time as questions began to swirl in my head and my mind was starting to buzz with thoughts.
My brows were knitted together and a frown crept onto my face. "What?" I asked, a puzzled expression masked my features as my voice was laced with a hint of confusion. "What are you talking about? What have you been hiding from me?" I questioned, sitting up straighter this time and I could feel my heart beating faster inside of my chest.
He let out a breath. "I..."
The next few words that left his lips made my heart sink, and it changed everything I ever knew.
